We’re now just over halfway through an exciting year at Youthtown, and it's true that time certainly does fly when you're having fun!
This year we've been busy all around the country as we continue to progress positively on our strategy. The success in hitting our growth targets has been particularly encouraging, as this enables us to be more accessible to young New Zealanders in key communities across New Zealand.
We put this growth down to the success of our youth development philosophy, which schools across the country have endorsed by having Youthtown deliver our Sport and Outdoor programmes within their curriculum. It is a natural progression for these young people to join us at our After School and Holiday programmes, when they have experienced ‘The Youthtown Way’.
To support our expanding teams to continue to deliver high quality youth development programmes, we now have two Regional Operation Managers. Leigh Peters for the Auckland area and we welcome a new name to Youthtown, Andy Pilbrow, for outside of Auckland.
Youthtown’s staff training remains pivotal to ensure high quality and besides our induction and on-going youth development and leadership training, we have now added Treaty of Waitangi training for all. Our Sport Programme Manager has also been updating us on international standards of delivering and measuring physical literacy after attending an inspiring conference in Canada.
Have a look at all the other things we’ve been busy doing, below. You can see we certainly enjoy our winter activities with young people just as much as the summer ones and we’ll continue the fun throughout this term.
Until next time,
Youthtown in your Community
Youthtown Aquafun Zone at the Hutchwilco Boat Show
Over 30,000 people descended upon the ASB Showgrounds in Auckland for the largest boat show event of the year, and Youthtown was proud to be on display with our Youthtown Aquafun Zone.
Our Youthtown Aqua Fun Zone was an area specifically for young people, where our 6 key programme areas of After School, Holiday, Sports, Outdoor, Leadership & Community provided a wide range of fun 'aqua' themed activities to enjoy.
We had school groups participate in the activities during school time and then opened up to the public for the remainder of the time. Popular activities included learning to snorkel in the indoor heated pool, as well as cool demonstrations like underwater hockey and kayak rolls from our expert Outdoors team.
The kids also enjoyed taking up the opportunity to try out the yacht and windsurfer simulators, tackle the obstacle course and complete a craft masterpiece, while the parents definitely enjoyed our ‘Chill Zone’ where they could sit back and watch the action from the comfort of their seat with a cup of coffee. Best of all the day was FREE for all young people under 16.
One school teacher said “Thanks Youthtown for having such an amazing facility at the Boat Show, it was superbly run by a group of fantastic people! We are so grateful we got to be one of the schools who visited you”

Youthtown Supporting Runners from Shore to Shore
Youthtown was once again in the middle of the action at Milford Reserve this year as over 6,000 people participated in the Harbour Sport Shore to Shore fun run.
Our Youthtown team was present at the ‘Dreamt it, Did it with Youthtown’ inflatable finish line, to celebrate the participants’ efforts on completing the fun run.
Once participants gained their breath back, they were treated to a range of fun and engaging activities from our Youthtown North Shore and Youthtown Sport team, with games, tug o’ war competitions, temporary tattoos and of course our hugely popular, Youthtown InstaDream tent, where people could take photos on a winning podium! Check out the winning photos HERE
Thanks to everyone who was a part of such a fun day with us in the North Shore community, and a huge congratulations to those who ‘Dreamt it’ and ‘Did it’ by completing the run.
Youthtown Helps Bring Youth Event to LYFE
In it’s 17th year the Linwood Youth Festival Experience (LYFE) took place in March in Christchurch, where youth pride, diversity and achievements are celebrated.
Youthtown was proud to support the not-for-profit community event. Our Christchurch team had a stall set up with fun activities on offer throughout the day including face painting, zombie face art, photo booth, cupcake decorating and more!
The day included awesome activities with amazing performances by young people too, celebrating the youth of Christchurch.

Is It a bird, Is It a plane? No It’s the Youthtown Oamaru Van!
Our Youtown Oamaru crew designed a cardboard Youthtown van and took flight in the 10th anniversary of the Port FM Birdman competition in Oamaru. With over 1,000 people in attendance, our Youthtown Oamaru team bravely took their creatively designed, Youthtown flying van, and leaped off the wharf.
The Youthtown team didn’t manage to fly for long, but were happy to have taken away the best dressed prize thanks to Hamish McEwan’s art work.
Youthtown more Accessible than EVER!
There was an article released in the NZ herald earlier this year titled “Farewell to Youthtown”, which referred to the closure of our facility building on Nelson St, however was misinterpreted by some readers. Youthtown as an organisation is in no way saying goodbye, and is as vibrant as ever with exciting plans for the future. READ MORE
Youthtown celebrates Youth Week around NZ
Youth Week is an opportunity for New Zealanders to celebrate and recognise the extraordinary contribution that young New Zealanders make.
In celebration of this year's theme "We are the future", Youthtown provided an opportunity for our youth to express what this year's theme means to them.
Each age group had a Youth Week themed competition on offer. Years 0-3 students participated in a colouring competition, Years 4-6 students created a poem, Years 7-8 students wrote a newspaper article and Years 9-13 students produced a video.
Youthtown is extremely proud of the effort and positive messages being expressed in each and every entry into the competition, the level of creativity and talent was awesome to see. Thank you to all those who participated in the competition and joined us in celebrating Youth Week.
You can view the winning entries HERE and view the winning video below.
Youthtown also ran some local events in the community in celebration of youth week, including a Zombie Apocalypse in Christchurch and an inter-school capture the flag competition in Taupo.
