Over 150 Participated in the Barrier Island 5K Run/Hike

Runners gather at the starting line for the 5KThe weekend kicked off with the Barrier Island 5K Run/Hike with more than 150 runners and hikers of all ages. The trail that began on a grassy knoll next to a pond, threaded through the forest and ended with a stretch on the beach. Fifteen-year old Chad Bateson a rising sophomore at Socastee High School in Myrtle Beach took first place with a time of 19:53. Second place winner Nick Rindge (20) said because the course was so unusual – with a run through the forest and a run on the beach - one should add five minutes to the time it would normally take to do a 5K.

Surprise Winner in the Seventh Annual Alumni Staff Regatta:

Weston Caswell presents the "trophy" paddle to Sally Young, regatta winner.Though all but one of the competitors were male and the majority of them were current young summer camp staff members Sally Renters Young, who served as a staff member from 1976-1978, still sailed through the finish line first during the Seventh Annual Alumni Staff Sailing Regatta at St. Christopher Camp and Conference Center, Sunday, June 23, 2013. “I had some wonderful competition,” said Sally. “They’re great sailors.” Twenty-four sailors participated in the sunfish regatta, running six heats of four boats each. The final race pitted the six winners of each heat (Weston Caswell, Drew Floyd, Sam Hunter, Will Henry Lawrence, Zach Miller and Sally Young) against each other. All of the winners of the heats except Drew Floyd and Sally Young were current staff members. Drew served on staff at the camp in recent years.

Time Capsule Contains 4-Hour Video, Photographs and Letters

Children carry time-capsule.Dozens of people gathered under the picnic pavilion at St. Christopher June 24, for the unearthing of the time capsule, which had been buried 25 years earlier as part of the 50th Anniversary.  After being unearthed the red tube was carried in a procession over to the deck at Temple Conference Center where the Rev. Bob Lawrence, Executive Director confessed that the tube was empty. It had actually been unearthed months before – so that they’d be able to check on the state of the contents. It’s a good thing they did, because when they unearthed it putrid water began bubbling out. All of the contents were soaked. In the months prior to this celebration they were able to dry out and salvage much of what was inside  - including the video – portions of which had been transferred to DVD so that it could be shown at the Gala. Bishop Lawrence was on hand to pronounce absolution following the Executive Director’s confession!

Vintage Gala and Auction Draws over 300 to St. Christopher’s Anniversary Celebration

Delicious food was served at the GalaThe highlight of the three-day event, held Monday evening, was the Pelican Gala which was fashioned as a 1938 lawn party, featuring a sit-down dinner for over 300 on a grassy knoll by the ponds.  The Good News Bluegrass Band provided music. Guests, some in period costume, strolled among antique cars, a sweet-grass basket stand, a milliner’s display, a bed swing, croquet and a s’mores station,
The evening ended with a silent and live auction which included framed original oil paintings contributed by J. Christian Snedeker and Karen Larson Turner,  a sunfish sailboat and an original Mary Whyte sketch among many other items.

Upon the conclusion of the celebration, Executive Director Bob Lawrence said, “it was an amazing three days of remembering the past, celebrating the present and looking forward to a bright future with all that God has in store for this hallowed place and the Diocese of South Carolina.”  While taking time out for the anniversary celebration over an extended weekend, Tuesday morning, St. Christopher welcomed another full session of summer campers, as well as three different Conference Center groups as they continue with their ministry for the next 75 years and beyond.
