Science to Art Project (START): Pollinators

This year we were very fortunate to receive funding from the UBC Chapman and Innovation grant to conduct a project called Science to Art – START. START is a traveling museum project that allows elementary and secondary school students to design and create exhibits through intergenerational collaboration with artists in the community. This year the exhibits highlight a very important local environmental issue – the plight of pollinators.

Thanushi, our Education Coordination, partnered with three schools from the Edible Garden Project and two schools from the Intergenerational Landed Learning Project to promote environmental education in classrooms in a really fun and exciting way... continue reading.

Pollinator Project @ Loutet Farm

Pollinator Project: Garden Design and Planting Sessions

We are excited to design some pollinator gardens for different sites around North Vancouver and invite you all to come join us, share your knowledge and learn along with us. We are teaming up with Evergreen for a series of workshops at Loutet Farm to learn about pollinator garden design, preparing a garden site and planting hundreds of plants.

Join us for to Collaborate on the Pollinator Garden Design at Loutet Farm August 19th, 10am-12pm.

Re-design the front garden, incorporating natives into the existing perennial garden. In this knowledge sharing session we will learn about pollinators, their importance, and collaborate on a design plan to include more forage and habitat for pollinators at Loutet Farm. Register here!

Other events include:
Sept 30th, 1-3pm: GardenSmart Workshop - learn about planting a pollinator garden in an indigenous context with Cease Wyss at the Harmony Garden on Squamish Nation (gardensmart workshop link)

Sept 21st, 6-8pm: Skillshare Workbee at Queen Mary - help us plant an expansion of the permaculture food forest with more pollinator forage and habitat.

To learn more about our Pollinator Project, read this blog post from Colleen. "We have begun our Pollinator Project!  It is multi-faceted, involves all of us at the EGP, and has everything to do with pollinators.  We are not just talking insects and birds.  We are talking everything about pollinators – what they are attracted to, what they are not attracted to, where they live, their habits, getting them into our gardens and keeping them happy, healthy and sticking around." ... read more.

Garlic Fundraiser for the Sharing Gardens

We had an awesome garlic harvest at Bridgman Sharing Garden--about 700 bulbs! We are selling this garlic during the next Loutet Community Market to support our Sharing the Bounty programs.

We will have garlic at Loutet farm gate sales weekly but if you want to buy a few extra bulbs to support sharing thousands of pounds of volunteer-grown food on the North Shore so that EVERYONE in our community has access to the best quality produce - come out and buy some beautiful cloves at Loutet Farm on August 26, 10am-12pm.

Volunteer at Loutet Farm: Pesky Weeds!

We need a weed blitz. Those pesky "weeds" are taking over and out-competing some crops, dropping a million seeds and we need help. Join us at a workbee on Sat Aug 12 or Sat Aug 26 or drop in any Thursday evening 5:30-8.

Not long after, she heard a rustling out back. Continue reading...
