2016 Suwon Human City Forum

CityNet and Suwon City have organized the 2016 Suwon Human City Forum. The forum will be held in November 3-4 in Suwon, Republic of Korea.


This Forum aims to provide a platform to allow Asian municipal leaders to meet and exchange their views on progressive urban reforms to accommodate human flourishing and create a network of municipal leaders and urban policy institutes looking to implement human-oriented urban policies.

Register for this year’s Executive Committee Meeting


The registration for CityNet 34th Session of the Executive Committee Meeting that will take place on November 24, 2016 in Makati, Philippines, is open. The Secretariat will hold one day of Strategic Planning Meeting on November 23rd (by invitation only) to strategize CityNet activities. Further details will be announced when it becomes available.

Sidoarjo learns Seoul's best practices through CityNet Services Program
Sidoarjo Regency recently visited CityNet and Seoul Metropolitan Government to learn some of Seoul’s best practice local programs on September 20-24, 2016. The 13-member delegation, comprised of parliament and department heads, focused on learning Seoul’s e-governance, water treatment, solid waste management, and public hospital management. During the visit, Sidoarjo said they were keen in improving their governance through the use of ICT. Sidoarjo also expressed to further learn how Seoul City manages its hospital. The Sidoarjo’s visit to Seoul City was the first of CityNet Services activities this year. CityNet Services is a customized program in the form of learning visit, technical assistance, and city-to-city partnerships. Members apply for CityNet Service to suit their specific needs. 
Representatives from Taichung and Taipei City visit CityNet
To enhance their active participation in the network, The Principal Advisor to Taipei City Mayor Ms. Chingyu Yao and Deputy Mayor of Taichung Ms. Yi-Ying Lin paid a visit to CityNet Secretariat at separate occasions. The representatives from the two cities expressed their appreciation for the support that CityNet has contributed to them and shared their intention to expand more collaboration with the network.
A digital platform for neighbourhood data mapping

Supported by CityNet National Chapter funding, project Aksiku.Bdg engaged youth participation of Bandung city towards social based security by employing place-based education with the use of mobile technology in 30 districts, which leads to creative problem solving. Bandung Creative City Forum has been endorsed by Bandung City Government to assess the environmental issues in the city which lack resources for regular monitoring.

CityNet presents at the Global Social Economy Forum

CityNet Secretary General Vijay Jagannathan shared innovative experiences of different Asian cities’ efforts in mitigating the damages from natural disasters based on multi-sectoral partnerships during the 3rd edition of the Global Social Economy Forum GSEF2016 in Montreal, Canada on 7th September. He explained the Community Based Adaptation and Resiliency Against Disasters Project and the post-disaster recovery framework in Nepal following the earthquake in 2015.

CityNet promotes safety at the Asian Women’s Network Forum

Titled “the Role of Safer Cities for Women in the New Urban Agenda”, CityNet Program Officer Sayel Cortes presented the reason why women safety is important for cities at the Asia Women’s Network Forum in Seoul on 1st September. He explained about building a city safe from violence by connecting women safety with several urban issues that are relevant to the New Urban Agenda and the partnership between CityNet, Seoul Metropolitan Government and UN-Habitat.

CityNet speaks at the Clean Air Asia Conference

CityNet Program Officer Felix Kalkowsky shared the network’s experience in mainstreaming air quality in urban development through South-South Twinning and sustaining capacity building training initiatives on air quality management in Asia during the 17th IUAPPA World Clean Air Congress and 9th Clean Air Asia Better Air Quality Conference from August 29th – September 2nd in Busan, South Korea.

CityNet at CDIA Advisory Panel and Stakeholder Forum Expert Group meeting

As one of Cities Development Initiative for Asia’s (CDIA) partners, CityNet participated at the Advisory Panel and Stakeholder Forum Expert Group Meeting from September 6th-8th in Bangkok. This meeting aimed at building upon CDIA’s Strategy and Business Plan for the subsequent period of 2018-2022 by gathering inputs from stakeholders’ representatives representing the demand-side of CDIA services.

Korean Youth Media Journalist covers CityNet activities

As an effort to engage with the Korean youths, CityNet invited the Korean Youth Media Journalist to learn more about the network’s activities which initiated them to create a series of coverage on some issues. The excited Korean Youth Journalist attended the launch of recent CityNet publication during the International Forum on Urban Policy for the SDGs where they also had a conversation with urban practitioners to discuss challenges youths face in different parts of the world.

Transportation Strategy Workshop for Asian Cities Report

CityNet Yokohama Project Office
Study Visit on Public and Maternal Health

As part of CBARAD-II’s Component 1 activities, five nursing students from Yokohama City University along with their three mentors visited Iloilo from August 2-5. Through the visits the students are able to share their knowledge and learn about CBARAD schemes and activities with a particular focus on maternal health, met expectant mothers, health professionals and practitioners, and gave a workshop to day-care students.

Second Batch of Barangays participate in CBRA, Iloilo

In line with Component 1 of CBARAD-II 7 barangays and 319 citizens participated in the second round of Community Based Risk Assessment (CBRA) in August. 9 Participatory Capacity and Vulnerability Analysis (PCVA) tools were used to establish each barangay’s disaster timeline, rank the severity and impact of hazards, compile DRR information and a list of organizations providing DRR support, among others.

Yokohama’s Annual Citywide Disaster Drill


On Sunday August 21 three members of the CityNet Yokohama Project Office attended Yokohama’s annual citywide disaster drill. The drill took place at an elementary school in the Naka Ward of Yokohama and was a part of the 37th 9 Prefecture and City Joint Annual Disaster Drill. The drill concluded with a speech by Ms. Fumiko Hayashi, the mayor of Yokohama, who spoke about the importance of preparing for disasters.

Building Capacity and Commitment in the Iloilo CDRRMC

In cooperation with Component 1 of the CBARAD-II Project, the Iloilo City DRRM Council and Office began an organizational development process in order to strengthen the capacities and core competencies of its members and the overall organization.
