How to Report Greenhouse Gas Emissions following the end of your Financial Year

Now that Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission reporting has become a mandatory requirement for UK PLCs*, a new focus has been placed on public disclosure of this information, whether or not your business is listed and even if you are an SME. End of Financial Year provides ideal timing to do this.

Voluntary reporting of GHG emissions is popular for supply chain tenders as well as within programmes such as the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and Global Resource Initiative (GRI) to build brand recognition for your sustainability/CSR credentials. You may also report GHG emissions as part of your ISO14001 Environmental Management System.
Finally, by measuring and managing your GHG emissions, you will be able to save operational costs.

So what are 5 'must have' steps for GHG reporting?
  • Define the boundaries - this should fit with your financial boundary
  • Work out which scopes need to be involved - Follow the GHG protocol. You will need scope 1 & 2 emissions as a minimum, but you may miss out on significant emissions and opportunity by excluding all scope 3
  • Make sure you have all the correct carbon conversion metrics- e.g. Defra 2013 conversion factors, EU car vehicles efficiencies
  • Write it up accurately - are your results checked - do the conclusions really make sense? Make sure you disclose your boundaries, assumptions, completeness of data and calculation accuracy
  • After Reporting activity - implement projects across the business to drive awareness (both in the business and market) and to deliver cost/carbon reductions and start mapping their return on investment (ROI)
