MILLCREEK YOUTH COUNCIL

MILLCREEK. We are in the process of forming a city-wide Youth Council. The goal of the Millcreek Youth Council will be to teach our youngsters about municipal government and provide opportunities for community service in both formal and social settings.

The Youth Council will help inform the Mayor and City Council of the needs and wishes of the young people in our City, and will assist with city-sponsored activities such as the Venture Outdoors festivals, Millfreaks in the Park, the Easter Egg Hunt and other city events.

Applicants must be Millcreek residents entering ninth through twelfth grades. They should anticipate committing five to ten hours per month for service projects and meetings.  Council meetings will be held each month, date and time TBD.  For additional information, email youthcouncil@millcreek.us.  Click here for the Youth Council application

VENTURE OUT TONIGHT!

SANITATION
IN A DISASTER
MILLCREEK.  Did you know that "human waste is one of the deadliest substances on earth.  Where sanitation is poor, death & disease are rampant." This is a quote from Kathy McMullin, aka "The First Responder Mom".  Kathy will be teaching "Sanitation in a Disaster" at the Valley View Stake Center, 2245 East 3900 South, on Thurs., August 2nd at 7pm.

In Kathy's class, you will be educated on all aspects of sanitation. You'll learn how to set up a temporary bathroom, as well as how to prevent hydrogen sulfide from entering your home. (Did you know that could be a problem?) You'll also discuss pesticides and cleansers. This experience will be eye-opening, even to the most seasoned emergency responder.

Everyone 14 and older is invited attend.  Kathy is a critical infrastructure specialist with the Utah State Division of Emergency Management. She is a member of the State Emergency Response Team (SERT) and is trained in Critical Thinking Analytic Methods with the Department of Homeland Security and Advanced Critical Infrastructure Protection from the Emergency Management Institute.

BUBBLE BALL GAMES AT COMMUNITY CENTER

MILLCREEK. Local teenagers are invited to participate in FREE bubble games at the Millcreek Library. Sounds like an interesting summer reading (?) activity!

Parental waiver and registration is required and space is limited. Register at the Millcreek Library Information Desk or by phone 801-943-4636 (press 3 to get a librarian).

This fun activity will take place on Thurs., August 9th, 7-9 PM, at the Millcreek Library, 2266 E. Evergreen Ave.
UDOT'S PARLEYS INTERCHANGE PLANS COULD SPELL DISASTER FOR PARTS OF MILLCREEK

MILLCREEK. Last week, we published a Call to Action by Mayor Silvestrini and Mount Olympus Community Council Chair David Baird, asking Millcreek residents to comment by August 10th on UDOT's current plans to alter the Parleys Canyon interchange.  Click here and scroll down to read their message.

As we pointed out last week, UDOT's plans could severely limit or eliminate the Grandeur Peak Trailhead, risk severely narrow or eliminate the northern part of Wasatch Blvd, and could take out homes along that same part of Wasatch Bvd.

UDOT's plans can be reviewed by clicking here. There is a public meeting scheduled with the Salt Lake City Council on Tuesday, July 31st at 5 PM (r51 S. State St., 3rd Fl), where you can hear more about the plans.

This is a reminder to please voice your concern by leaving a voicemail on the UDOT hotline (801) 743-7885 and sending an email to parleysEIS@utah.gov. Again, the deadline is August 10th.
REMINDER - You have until August 24th to provide input on the City's draft General Plan.
