Hello <<First Name>>,

Did you know? Last year, women only comprised 21% of all directors, writers, producers, executive producers, editors and cinematographers on the top 100 grossing films (Centre for the Study of Women in TV & Film). This month is Women's History Month and with International Women's Day only days away (March 8th), we are highlighting women filmmakers to readdress the balance!

From a new take on artist Frida Kahlo and Greta Gerwig's endearing screenwriting, to Agnès Varda's New Wave, this issue is full of daring, joyful and women-fuelled cinema delights to celebrate International Women's Day. Let us know what you enjoy and don't forget to celebrate the amazing women in your life!

Frances Ha (2013) // Co-written by
and starring Greta Gerwig

Marketing Assistant: Ellie

"As Frances' life seemingly falls apart, her unbreakable spirit, wit and creativity carries her, leaping and bounding, to discover her own personal spin on happiness. Greta Gerwig fills Frances with an infectious joy and her and Sophie's strength of friendship steals the show!"

The Imperalists Are Still Alive (2010) // Written and directed by Zeina Durra

Edinburgh Cinema Club: Isobel

"Ziena Durra shines as an original female voice in independent cinema! This is a clever portrayal of the inherited trauma Middle Eastern descendants grapple with in post 9/11 NYC shot on gritty 16mm, told through an accessible, albeit paranoid, girl meets boy narrative."

Frida Kahlo (2021) // Directed by Ali Ray

Education Coordinator: Chloe

"I miss museums, but while we wait for them to reopen we can turn to great art documentaries! Frida Kahlo, as part of Exhibition on Screen, takes you on a journey through the artist’s life. The film gives an in-depth biographical, socio-political and art historical context to her work. A great resource for any art lovers!"

Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962) // Written and directed by Agnès Varda

The Debutante Journal: Rachel & Molly

"A 1960s French Left Bank film, following young singer Cléo. The opening sequence, featuring tarot cards, reminds us of our issue 03 call for contributors, as well as interrogating the view of how women should “be” in French society. Naturally, we believe there are no prescribed ways for women to be behave or belong!"

Book cover for The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett. The cover shows the outlines of two women's heads collaged together. The top half is peachy pink and the bottom is a bright mint green. There are gold swirls across the cover.
The Vanishing Half // Brit Bennett

Head of Development: Juliet

I loved this book! The Vanishing Half follows the lives of the Vignes sisters - identical twins who grow up in a small, Southern black community and run away at age sixteen. More than a decade later they are living completely different lives - one sister has returned to the town she grew up in, and the other is passing as white, with a white husband who knows nothing about her past.

This is a really complex, powerful, beautiful and poignant book, which deserves all of the hype it's been getting.
