Hello <<First Name>>,

Happy New Year from everyone at Filmhouse!

We know 2020 was a difficult year, and we're so grateful for the support each and everyone of you showed us throughout. We can't wait to welcome you back to Filmhouse, but until then, we'll be bringing you a weekly dose of recommendations to keep you occupied in the meantime.

Don't forget to follow our social media channels for more film content and updates - you can follow us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
Castle in the Sky (1986) // Hayao Miyazaki
Marketing Officer: Abbie

"I rounded off 2020 by watching Studio Ghibli's first ever film, Castle in the Sky, on New Year's Eve, and it fulfilled my desire for escapism and adventure without even leaving my living room. It blends breathtaking animation with a gripping storyline, whilst taking a hard look at the relationship between humanity and nature."

Small Axe (2020) // Steve McQueen

Director of Programming: Rod

"If you’ve not yet caught up on Steve McQueen’s BBC Small Axe series, I’m here to remind you that it is, entirely, essential viewing.”

Watch the series on BBC iPlayer
Birdman (2014) // Alejandro González Iñárritu
Edinburgh Cinema Club: Isobel
Meet Riggan Thomas - fading Hollywood Star with one last chance to resurrect his career. The only trouble is his neurotic alter-Birdman-ego is with him at every step! Birdman or ‘The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance’ is an enthralling satire about showbiz vanity, and Alejandro G. Iñárritu shows this while taking us on a 2 hour claustrophobic journey into a confused mind."

The Honjin Murders // Seishi Yokomizo
Programme Officer: Raymah

"A rural snowy village celebrates a big wedding which tragically ends in death. Regarded as one of Japan’s finest mystery novels, The Honjin Murders is an expertly crafted and witty locked room mystery which introduces one of Japan’s most prolific fictional detectives.

Yokomizo pays loving tongue-in-cheek references to mystery writers which will have you making notes for all the stories and authors you may not yet have discovered for yourself and have you wishing that hopefully more of his own oeuvre gets translated soon."

Podcast: Breaking Binaries
Development Officer: Matt

"In our divided times, here is a very refreshing podcast where two oppositional ideas are unpacked. Poet and educator Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan is joined by a guest each week to deconstruct a range topics that at first seem irreconcilable opposites but are often just hiding much needed nuance."

Earlier this year we shared our plans for a new home on Festival Square. Our design has evolved following our extensive consultation process, and in December we submitted the Planning Application to the City of Edinburgh Council.

You can find out more and view the designs on our website, and support our Application by submitting a comment direct to the Council via the online planning portal. The deadline for submitting your comment is Monday 1 February 2021.

Filmhouse has recognised the need for a new home for over 30 years. In the below video, our CEO Ken Hay explains why Festival Square is the ideal location for the New Filmhouse.
