Hello <<First Name>>,

We may be temporarily closed but we're still here to bring you a weekly dose of recommendations to keep you occupied in the meantime!

We recently sent out an update regarding the reopening of Filmhouse, if you missed it, you can read it here.

Don't forget to follow our social media channels for more film content and reopening updates - you can follow us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
Someone, Somewhere (2019) // Cédric Klapisch

Marketing Assistant: Ellie

"This is a love story, but not as you might think… Mélanie and Rémy’s Parisian apartments are separated by a single wall, the two strangers both letting their anxieties dominate their lonely city lives. This charmingly satisfying slow-burn turns traditional narratives on its head - when it finally arrives, the inevitable meet-cute is well worth the wait."

Sorry to Bother You (2018) // Boots Riley

Development Officer: Matt

"A hilarious, wild, completely unexpected takedown of false consciousness starring the always brilliant LaKeith Stanfield. It may seem overtly weird, but there is something scarily on-point in its diagnosis of our world. Best to go into this blind to fully enjoy its totally uninhibited twists and turns!"

Watch on Netflix
Mank (2020) // David Fincher

Edinburgh Cinema Club: Isobel
“It’s 1930s Hollywood, and the drunkenly sharp Herman J. Mankiewicz is sweatily racing to finish writing Citizen Kane. This isn’t Orson Welles's story - it's Mank’s, and Oldman shines as the bedraggled writer.

Intriguingly exploring the Auteur, Author relationship, Mank is an astonishingly detailed love letter to Old Hollywood, filled with grit, glitz and deep-rooted corruption."

Watch on Netflix
Nomadland // Jessica Bruder

Education and Learning Coordinatior: Chloe

"An equally fascinating and terrifying account of older Americans who suffer the casualties of the Great Recession. The access Bruder gets to this community is incredible and provides a much needed portray of modern day America. The book has just been adapted to screen by Chloe Zhao (The Rider) starring Frances McDormand. I'm a huge fan of Zhao's work so I can't wait to see the film when it comes out, hopefully next year.''

Deck The Walls

Cinescapes are looking for family photographs and clips of Edinburgh at Christmastime for their Deck The Walls project, where they will project images in mystery locations. It’s a creative response to the Redrawing Edinburgh project, and hopes to remind people of happy times through shared memories.

If you would like to share your photos or film clips, email them to deckthewalls@cinescapes.co.uk.
