Luxor (2020) // Zeina Durra
Belmont Head of Cinema Operations: Colin

"The Evening Standard calls Luxor 'reminiscent of other deliberately excruciating movies where uptight, middle class singletons lose the plot' in their review, which eventually comes around. So will you. Riseborough's subtly disconnected performance grounds it, giving nod to the tension of the region and the relationships in the film. The photography and composition is beautiful; the story gentle yet affecting. And the shallowness of say an Eat Pray Love feels a million miles away."

Force Majeure (2014) // Ruben Östlund

Edinburgh Cinema Club: Isobel

"Force Majeure is a delicious dramedy following the uncomfortable aftermath one man encounters when his ‘survival mode’ response to an avalanche is to save himself and leave his family behind...

The result is an anxious, mordantly funny dissection of cowardice, human impulse and marriage."

The Rider (2017) // Chloé Zhao

Programme Manager: Evi

"Chloé Zhao’s second feature entranced audiences with what we now know as the director’s distinct cinematic style. Blending documentary and fiction and observing life’s complexities with a steady, poetic yet simple presence, The Rider is a beautiful character study of a young bronc rider in today’s South Dakota."

I Am Greta (12) (2020) // Nathan Grossman

Education Recommends

To mark Earth Day this coming Thursday, our Education team recommend I Am Greta, an insightful documentary which follows Greta Thunberg on her fight to get people to listen to scientists about the world's environmental problems.

Access the Earth Day Education library here, which aims to empower students through environmental education.
Eat Up: Food, Appetite and Eating What You Want // Ruby Tandoh

Marketing Coordinator: Ellie

"Part memoir, part self-help book, part recipe book, Ruby Tandoh’s Eat Up is a nostalgic love letter to food. Discussing the emotions, lessons and challenges of food shopping, of cooking and of eating - whether you’re alone or with friends and family - Eat Up takes on food in all its forms. I particularly enjoyed the many cinema references she uses to link food and film - including the culinary meaning behind THAT restaurant scene in When Harry Met Sally. For film and food lovers everywhere!"
