Last week marked 1 year since our first closure of the Coronavirus pandemic. It is difficult to convey how uncertain our future felt on that morning. We closed voluntarily prior to the announcement of 2020s first lockdown and of the furlough scheme, for the safety of our staff and customers. We knew things would be challenging. We didn’t know how long they may be challenging for. In the 12 months following that decision we have managed to survive – in March last year that didn’t feel like a given. We’ve done so because of the amazing generosity of our audience, members and supporters. Thanks to everyone who has sent donations, well wishes or encouraged us. Also, thank you to everyone who visited the cinema once we did reopen in September. We’ll never forget those 8 weeks. To be trusted with your safety was our pleasure. As we look to the future, we’re aware that there will still be challenges to come. At this moment we still don’t know when we will open our doors again. But we’re optimistic because we know that our audience is looking forward to when they can come back. And we can’t wait to see you.

The Belmont Team x
Obvious Child (2014) // Gillian Robespierre

Marketing Officer: Kirsty

"This unconventional indie rom-com stars the wonderful Jenny Slate as Donna, a struggling comic who finds herself pregnant after a one night stand. This refreshingly honest and witty comedy explores real life issues in a natural and unfiltered manner. The character of Donna herself will surely feel relatable to young adults (or anyone) attempting to navigate the messy realities of adult life"

Head of Programming: Rod

“This would currently be showing at Belmont if we were open, it is the very timely and unsettling story of a young French skiing prodigy and her grooming at the hands of her ex-racer coach."

Education Recommends

We celebrated Francophonie day on Saturday 20 March. To mark this celebration the Education team recommends La Famille Bélier, a French comedy drama about Paula, a teenage girl who lives with her D/deaf family. Paula has a gift for singing; her teacher encourages her to pursue her talent and audition for a prestigious music school in Paris. This film explores important themes including representation and the role of popular music in French culture.
