Welcome, drummers from across the world to this, the second official Newsletter since the launch of the new SIRD website. I should just like to take this opportunity to thank Alexander Nedelkos on behalf of the SIRD Team, for his incredible work creating the website; a huge undertaking! I am sure you will all agree that he has created a beautiful, user friendly site that will now, and for many years to come, be the hub for all things rudimental drumming!

So, what’s on the horizon? Well there are currently loads of exciting projects underway at SIRD: SIRDcast podcasts, Stikipidia, to name but a few. However, I am here to briefly talk to you about two other projects…
Portsmouth 2020 2021 2022
It has been quite the journey trying to organise the 3rd International Rudimental Drummers’ Symposium. We had been all set for September 2020, however the Coronavirus had other ideas! So, we quickly rescheduled for June 2021, thinking the world would be back to normal… somewhat optimistic perhaps. Finally (we hope), we made the decision early this year to move back to September 2022. This should ensure that factors such as travel and accommodation are not prohibitive, as we of course want as many people at the event as possible.

The look of the event hasn’t changed that much from the initial plan of 2020. We have managed to keep our deposits for the venues and the outline has remained the same:
  • Friday 16th September:
    • Arrive
    • Welcome Reception & Presentations
  • Saturday 17th September:
    • Masterclasses, Workshops & Presentations
    • Formal SIRD Banquet
  • Sunday 18th September:
    • Expo
    • Concert
The aim of these Symposiums are to bring drummers together to discuss our craft, share our different notation, styles, look at how we can better support the education of rudimental drumming, and of course DRUM!!!
Formal invitations will be sent out later this year to members of SIRD. To register your interest and become an associate member, please email:
With the success of the first SIRD digital event last September, we hope to make this an annual event.  Whilst we are looking at how we can streamline the format and make it more interactive, the goal remains the same – connecting rudimental drummers from across the world.

We have begun to shape this year’s SIRD Digital and are looking to make it a more concise, focused event of around 90-120 minutes (it will be shown throughout the day to account for the various time zones).  To coincide with the release of STIKIPEDIA (the definitive online space for all drum rudiments), we have decided that SIRD Digital’s theme will be the humble rudiment.

We are asking our members and associate members for any interesting performances, presentations, workshops or masterclasses (with a rudimental twist) so that we may include into the production. Videos should be of between 3-5 minutes and be of suitable quality. We can of course look at longer submissions if of  real interest and importance.

If you would like to be involved in this year’s event, please send your proposals to for consideration. Our aim is to create a varied and interesting programme of content but are keen to keep it to under 2 hours, so please do not be discouraged if your idea does not make the final event. We are always looking for content for our YouTube Channel, as well as our live Zoom workshops and rehearsals.
In Closing
The main thing I would like to get across is that SIRD is really starting to gain momentum, and we need as many people to contribute and get involved as possible. Whether you are creating content online, involved in educating the next generation of drummers, or you’re performing in a group, we would like to know. SIRD can help support you in making connections and getting your ideas out there. In return, you can contribute to SIRD and help us grow as an organisation.

Thank you for reading. Happy drumming!

- Russ Piner
