The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the Ministry of Tourism of Greece and the Region of Central Macedonia have partnered together to organize the 8th UNWTO International Meeting on Silk Road Tourism in Thessaloniki, Greece on 10-12 October 2018.

Together with the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), a joint session will take place examining how - by leveraging marketing and technical platforms - destinations can maximise promotion via storytelling techniques that drive tourism in new markets. Speakers include PATA CEO Dr. Mario Hardy and PATA Regional Director Daniela Wagner, as well as senior executives from TCI Research, TripAdvisor, ECA2, Thessaloniki Convention Bureau, Esplorio, Mastercard, TravelBeat and Leading Culture Destinations.

This international Silk Road meeting will be hosted for the very first time by a European Silk Road Member State, and focus on the overarching role and relevance of the Silk Road within a globalized tourism framework.

We invite all international partner agencies, interested stakeholders from around the globe, both public and private, to attend this event. Participation in the joint UNWTO and PATA session is free of cost; only registration for the event is required.

Australia welcomed over two million international visitor arrivals from Asia in the first half of 2018 – an 8.5 percent increase compared to the same period last year. The sub-region of South Asia (+27.4%) was the most dominant source market in terms of percentage growth during this period. PATA Issues & Trends – 1H2018 is now available

Over the last decade, travel distribution has changed dramatically from the traditional wholesale model to the evolution and market dominance of OTAs. Meanwhile, operators continue to seek high yielding direct business within a dynamic and shifting market and grapple with the entry of Airbnb to the marketplace and the new challenges it presents. With the ever-increasing number of consumers travelling, a range of alternative travel distribution solutions have emerged for operators to partner with to expand their sales mix, top-up occupancy levels, add value and clear distressed inventory.

In this issue of the Issues & Trends, Bartercard examines the evolving and changing face of tourism distribution solution models and the innovative ways in which savvy operators are using them to drive their business.
