More flights from Europe on routes to Northeast Asia

An annual increase of 5.3 percent in scheduled inbound flights from Europe to Northeast Asia is forecast for 2018. Although West Europe is expected to bounce back from a loss in 2017 with year-on-year growth of 3.9 percent in 2018, its flight frequency share will likely drop slightly from 42.6 percent in 2017 to 40.0 percent in 2018. Meanwhile, East Europe is projected to see a marginal drop of 0.6 percent, while flights from North Europe (11.3%) and South Europe (13.8%) are expected to contribute toward growth this year, taking up higher shares of 22.8 percent and 10.7 percent respectively.

Quarterly Tourism Monitor 4Q2017 is now available

The Quarterly Tourism Monitor (QTM) provides a timely quantitative view of inbound travel by origin markets for all major destinations in Asia Pacific by quarter for calendar year 2017.

Key highlights of QTM 4Q2017:
  • International visitor arrivals (IVAs) to the 30 Asia Pacific destinations that have released fourth quarter 2017 data show a combined inbound total of 94.8 million with a growth rate of 8.5 percent over the same period last year
  • In Northeast Asia, due to a political situation, Korea (ROK) witnessed a significant decline of Chinese arrivals by over 40 percent, leading to a decrease in the total visitor arrival count of 20 percent in this period. Japan, on the other hand, continued to see solid arrivals growth from China (+31.4%) during 4Q2017
  • In South Asia, after having recovered from the earthquake in 2015, Nepal reported the strongest growth of 23.7 percent for the quarter, driven largely by a 22.3 percent increase in visitor arrivals from India
