Reviewed by Gary Walsh, THE WINEFRONT

Blewitt Springs, and the lowest crop in 50 years, says winemaker and extra on Vikings, Michael Corbett. A little more whole bunch this year, and elevage for 14 months in 2200L Slavonian caskes, from Italy, being a new thing.

This is a superb wine. It’s fresh and distinctly mineral, yet deep and concentrated. So alive. So light on its feet. It has fresh raspberry and cherry flavour, dried rose perfume, a little spice and almond. The tannin sweeps and grips, but feels almost playful. Finish is so long, bright and packed with firm graphite tannin. It’s bloody McLaren Vale G. Mascarello. I can’t believe what I’m tasting.

2018 Balnaves Chardonnay  $29.50 pb
Today only $24.99 pb

Hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed and fermented on full solids in 25% new and used Louis Latour Burgundy barriques, mix of cultured and wild yeast, 11 months on lees, no malo. A mixed vintage weather-wise with early frosts reducing the crop by 30% but, in the end, the warm, dry finish proved ideal for this fine-edged chardonnay, revealing its inner delicacy. Cut apple, lemon drops and stone fruits with citrus acid bite. The almond bread characters on the palate add a lovely savoury touch. 92 points. Jeni Port, Halliday Wine Companion 2021

2016 Balnaves Shiraz $29.50 pb
Today only $24.99 pb

As ever, a sure hand, but one with a twist hitherto seldom used in Coonawarra; 30% whole bunch inclusion in the ferment. This has added spice and a singular tannin structure supporting the rich fruit and supple oak. So easy to enjoy. 14.5% alc; drink to 2031. 95 points. James Halliday, The Weekend Australian

2017 Balnaves 'The Blend' $20.00 pb
Today only $17.99 pb

"68% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 2% petit verdot. Matured in French oak (30% new) for 12 months. Some smart winemaking on show which belies the affordable price tag. Gentle fragrance, bright red and black fruits, but the real clincher is the concentrated aromatics, delightfully fresh and lifted. There's violet and rose petal with splashes of spice and some of that Coonawarra bay leaf that is pure terroir. Sensational value." - Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion) 93 points

Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot. Classic stuff from great Balnaves mob. What a brilliant wine this is – such ease and charm. Whiffs of blueberry, green herbs, eucalyptus, white pepper. Medium bodied at perfect level, cassis and dark berry flavours, eucalyptus and pepper again, lithe and fine tannins, excellent length and a general sense of succulence. Really punches above its weight. So lovely! What easy charm! Insane value. 93 points. Mike Bennie, The Wine Front September 2020

2017 Balnaves Entav Cabernet $29.50 pb
Today only $24.99 pb

Jane Faulkner Halliday Wine Companion 93 points - Stunning purple-crimson; aromas working overtime with florals, a touch of pepper and spice with bright red and purple fruits all following through on the medium-bodied and buoyant palate. The wine spends 5 months in new French oak puncheons resulting in decisive tannins, which need to soften, and they will, but a fab drink now.

Fresh new clones and a fresh style that’s bottled early, this has a rich array of blueberries and blackcurrants, as well as boysenberries and fresh red plums. The palate is silky and soft and the very focused flavours are well and truly in the fruit zone. A delicious blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now. Screw cap. 93 points. Nick Stock, jamessuckling.com July 2019

2013 Balnaves Cabernet Merlot $29.50 pb
Today only $24.99 pb

An 82/18% blend from three cabernet and two merlot vineyards; matured for 16 months in French oak (50% new). Excellent crimson-purple; the bouquet is aromatic and inviting, the palate with a balance of blackcurrant, mulberry, black olive and herbs, oak adding its own flavour as a bonus. 94 points. James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion 2018

2015 Balnaves Cabernet Sauvignon $39.00 pb
Today only $34.99 pb

Vintage 2015 was cool with very slow ripening after a warm Christmas, with low night-time temperatures allowing for good maturation. Cabernet Sauvignon from our Walker Cabernet vineyard (97.3%), was blended with (2.7%) Petit Verdot, from Dunstan. This wine spent 18 months in tight-grain French oak from Taransaud, and Berger and Sylvain cooperages, before bottling in December 2016.

Deep rich red in colour, the nose is perfumed with perfectly ripened dark blackberry, liquorice and cassis fruit. The palate is firm and full bodied, with fleshy cassis and blackberry fruit. The finish is long and textured with fine grainy grape tannins. This wine show is structure and completeness and is made to cellar with confidence.

Deeply coloured, this is classic Coonawarra Cabernet with cassis, mulberry, mint and dried bay leaf coming together with fine but firm tannins to present an intense, earthy wine that doesn’t even flick the needle of dead fruit/high alcohol. It thus has a certain austerity of the kind you once found in classed growth Bordeaux from good vintages such as ’70. 96 points. James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion 2019

2012 Balnaves 'The Tally' Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon $99.00 pb
Today only $90.00 pb

"Hand-picked grapes from the Dead Morris Vineyard were given extended maceration post-ferment, then taken to the best French barrels money can buy (50% new) for 20 months maturation. The complexity of the bouquet is striking, with black fruits, spice, earth and cedar, and a complete wine in the mouth, at once supple yet firm thanks to exemplary texture and structure. The savoury finish and aftertaste is pure cabernet." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)  96 points

Hits up immediately with flavour. A luscious gravity. For all the fruit, there is tannin, a spread of it, a curling wave. Seductive and impressive at once. Rich with blackcurrant and dark chocolate. Outstanding. 96 points. Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front October 2015

2010 Balnaves 'The Tally' Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon  $99.00 pb
Today only $90.00 pb

"The Tally, representing the top rung of Balnaves' cabernet-based reds, is given the full dose of fine French timber, and the fruit carries it off with regal style. This has cedary black fruit aromas, plums, vanillin, fresh, dark leaves and freshly tilled earthy notes. Fruit flavour bubbles up through the palate amid tannins that are supple, elongated and sturdy in character, the balance is right on and the finish leaves you salivating. Cellar with confidence; this is impeccable." - Nick Stock, 97 points

Fruit power, strength of tannin, fineness and finesse. It’s all here. Layers of blackcurrant and bay leaves, peppermint and rich dark plum. There’s a chocolatey/pencilly note here too but really, this presents as a seamless whole. The quality is outstanding. The length, the poise, the structural foundation. Tip-top Coonawarra cabernet. 95 points. Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

NV Balnaves Sparkling Cabernet $38.00 pb
Today only $34.99 pb

Balnaves have used Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to make this modern Sparkling red. Blended from selected parcels of more complex and elegant wines from eleven vintages of reserve wines matured as a solera. Tiraged in October 2018 and then disgorged in March 2019. Rich and very complex with cassis, blackberry and violet fruits, combined with mature Coonawarra Cabernet characters of chocolate, leather and truffle.

“If you’re looking for glasses and your budget tiptoes into hand-blown territory, though, these are, truly, the best I’ve ever used.” Andrew Jefford, Decanter.com
Buy a set of Zalto wine glasses. A good glass does not just dramatically alter the perception of a wine’s taste and smell, sometimes improving it two or three or more fold, it is also an object of beauty in itself. Zalto are the glasses with which wine pros are currently obsessed.”  Victoria Moore, The Telegraph

“Lovely to handle – featherlight, very fine-rimmed and curiously flexible...compared to the Riedel Sommelier range they’re very reasonably priced.”  Fiona Beckett, matchingfoodandwine.com
“Its stem was bouncy, balanced and fine as a violin bow, light as a hummingbird’s bones. Its rim was as honed as my favorite knife. This wasn’t merely a wine glass; it was a precision instrument that bordered on the spiritual...” Alice Feiring, alicefeiring.com

While hand-blown crystal glasses of this quality are never going to come cheap, the prices here are typically far lower than the closest competition on the market. This is because Zalto do not spend any money on marketing (check out their Instagram page if you need proof!) Any success that Zalto has enjoyed has been based purely on the quality of the glasses, not the quality of the promotional work.

Zalto do not necessarily recommend specific glasses for specific wine styles, despite what the names suggest. In fact, they think this idea is crazy and we tend to agree. How can there be a Pinot Noir glass, to take one example? Which Pinot Noir? Which country, which region, and at what age? Every wine is unique and what Zalto propose is that you should use the shape of glass you feel (or find through experience) works well with a particular wine or wine style at a particular stage of development. For example, you might find you enjoy young J.J. Prüm in the ‘White Wine’ glass, but prefer the same Riesling with age in a ‘Universal’. Or not. In general, the more air, or space, a wine needs, the bigger the glass. But largely it comes down to personal preference. Nonetheless, we have tried to give some idea of what we have found to work well in each glass.

Zalto Champagne Glass 6 pack $380

This glass maximises both the aroma and palate of fine sparkling wines. The super thin glass allows the finest of mousse and a long lasting bead. Gives the sparkling wines of the world a noblesse, while bringing out their best of their regional character.

Zalto Burgundy Glass 6 pack $380

The wide bowl in this glass gives maximum surface area, allowing the different components of the wine to open up and 'show' with great precision. Particularly good for enhancing the sweeter, fruit characteristics of a wine. As the name suggests, this is recommended for: Pinot Noir/Burgundy, but also Nebbiolo, Barbera, Chardonnay and Grüner Veltliner.

Zalto Bordeaux Glass 2 stem pack $130

This work wonders on wines rich in structure and fruit concentration and for wines high in tannin. Broader-based than most 'Bordeaux' glass styles its unique design accentuates and brings harmony to a wine's potency, concentration, extract and tannins. While is comes particularly recommended for Bordeaux, Brunello di Montalcino, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz etc, it actually works brilliantly with Nebbiolo and Pinot, too. Don't let the name fool you into thinking this is a one-dimensional stem.

Zalto Mystique Decanter $135

Designed for all full-bodied red wines, in particular young powerful red wines that require a bigger surface/air ratio for the enhanced exposure of the wines individual characteristics and finer nuances. Also ideal for decanting magnums.
