SPHO Promotes New Vocations Standardbred Adoptions

SPHO Offering Four Shows in 2012
Plus Incentives for New Members

The Standardbred Pleasure Horse Organization will once again offer four shows in the Central Ohio area in 2012. These typically include a wide range of Standardbred classes along with substantial Open classes. The events are well organized, but relaxed enough to be fun. Ample two-gait classes (walk/trot or rack) welcome green horses and riders with no show clothes required. Points accumulate toward exciting year end awards.

SPHO wishes to encourage interested parties to adopt a Standardbred and join the fun. As an incentive the organization donated $750 to New Vocations to apply toward adoption fees for new members. If you've adopted a Standardbred or Thoroughbred and wish to become involved with Ohio's dynamic SPHO, they'll waive your first year membership. Visit for details, dates, and locations of events.

Native Tongue
Thoroughbred Available for Adoption!

Native Tongue - 8 yr old, 15.3hh gelding
Adoption Fee: Waived
Located: Marysville, OH

Native is a nice gelding that could make someone a very nice Dressage horse because his build allows him the ability to lighten his front end and he carries a nice, natural rhythm when he is relaxed. He has come a long way in his training and when put to task, he steps up to the challenge. Native loves having an important job because he is still a competitor at heart and is still a showman as evident in the video where he is playing with us in the indoor. He knew where the camera was the whole time and used it to his advantage- life is good!

The dressage test he did was the first time he was asked to do something so far removed from racing and it didn’t even faze him. He just went to work as usual and had to add a few of his own opinions into it as he always does. Native definitely is ready to go onto his next career. Native will be suitable for any flat work and could do some low-level jumping as well.

Native is currently going to turn out with one other gelding and is very patient and kind to his younger turn out buddy. Native loves his turn out time and will thrive with as much turn out time as possible. Native has no vices.

Native’s last race was 3/30/10 and he originally sold for $30,000 at Keeneland as a yearling. He placed in half of his 23 races and earned $107,168.

Native Tongue is by Indian Charlie out of Savannah Canon by Shuailaan.

Raven Lady
Standardbred Available for Adoption

Raven Lady - 5 yr old, 15.3hh mare
Adoption Fee: $200
Located: Manchester, Michigan

Don’t let her shaggy winter coat dissuade you!
Raven is the type of mare that isn’t phased by much. She will be able to do anything that her riders ask of her and happy to oblige.

Her first ride, which can be witnessed in the video, was a breeze for her. She didn’t bat an eyelash during the grooming or mounting portion and stands like a gem in the crossties.

Under saddle, she rides like an old pro. She is cool and collected throughout the ride, even with new things being thrown at her. Going over the logs, which throws most of them off, just seemed like a normal addition to the ride to her. She never got upset, was very manageable on the slick snowy footing, and took everything right in stride. She is happy to ride with a bit of slack in her rein or with a bit of contact. She has very comfortable gaits to ride, very smooth. Having the stirrups flopping on her sides or legs making contact doesn’t seem to bother her. She is happy to stand, back up, trot off, walk…basically do anything for her rider. Once she is on good footing, we believe that she should easily rack but since it was so slippery we didn’t ask for anything but a little bit of trot on the long sides and gently through a turn or two.

This wonderful mare would make a great addition to anyone’s home. She would excel in any genre of riding that she was introduced to. She is big enough to take up a taller riders leg but not so big that she would be intimidating, making her a good fit for a variety of riders. She’s still a diamond in the rough but in no time you could have her polished right up!
