The ASPCA Generously Supports New Vocations' Efforts

The entire staff at New Vocations would like to express our sincere gratitude to The ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) for their generous support.
New Vocations, along with seven other Thoroughbred rescue organizations, has joined the ASPCA Million Dollar Rescuing Racers Initiative. This vital program, which has been made possible through a generous, private donor, was established to provide retired racehorses with the chance for rehabilitation and transitioning into a new, positive life away from the track.
The ASPCA grant will enable New Vocations to take in an additional 40 injured Thoroughbreds over the next twelve months to rehabilitate, retrain, and re-home. Since 1992, New Vocations has offered retiring racehorses a safe-haven, rehabilitation, and continued education through placement in qualified, caring homes. New Vocations has adopted out more than 3,000 horses since our inception, and this year we are projected to re-home roughly 400 Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds.

Equine Artist Pat Delong to Donate Proceeds to New Vocations

The Adrian College Equestrian Team has recently partnered with artist Pat DeLong and New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program in order to raise funds for all organizations involved.

For the past five years, Pat DeLong has published her Horse Racing Fantasy series calendar.  This year’s calendar features artwork of 12 notable horseracing champions. The horses include legends such as: Barbaro — an American racehorse who won the 2006 Kentucky Derby, Cigar — the leading money earner in Thoroughbred racing history, and Smarty Jones — 2004 winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.

This great gift can be pre-ordered before November 4th.  Any horse-person would enjoy DeLong’s 2012 calendar.  During the purchase, individuals can choose to donate to the racehorse adoption program or the equestrian team.

2012 calendars cost $21.00 (plus shipping). Calendars can be purchased on EBay by Clicking Here.

John Ross - 14 yr old, 16hh gelding

They say with age comes wisdom and that is truly the case with this guy. It is nice to have a more mature horse in the barn that is a pleasure to be around and handle. His personality is that of the quiet observer and is well aware of everything that goes on around the farm. He is definitely a joy to have around.

John is quiet to ride as long as his rider leaves him alone to do his job. He was a little nervous to work in the indoor arena the first time, but as you can see by the video, he is just fine outside and has a natural rhythm to his gates. He will make a nice pleasure or trail horse for a novice/ intermediate rider. His previous adopter took him trail riding, sometimes alone, and he loved it. He would even cross through water and over bridges.

John currently goes to turn out with 2 other geldings and get along well with them. If there are mares in the pasture next to him, he will walk up and down the fence row with the mares and ward off all the other geldings.

John retired from racing in 2004 after 26 starts and earned $25,925. He has been with his previous adopter since then and was returned due to finances. In July, he had his teeth floated, all vaccinations, and sheath cleaned. John Ross is by Cherokee Run out of Sunrise Lady by Far Out East. John has no vices.

Hasta La Veeza
Now Available For Adoption!

Hasta La Veeza - 4 yr old, 16hh gelding
Adoption Fee: Waived
Located: Chattanooga, TN
Contact: Angie at

Hasta La Veeza is a lovely, well mannered, four yr old pacing mare. She trained for racing, but fractured her pastern prior to her first race. She received the necessary surgery and generous rehabilitation and healing time. Veeza is now completely sound and has been ridden for 75 days. This mare had excellent manners at the track, both in harness and on the ground. Her owner and trainer said she was a real sweetheart and would do anything you asked.

Veeza was at a boarding facility in Wingate, N.Carolina. A local professional gave her 75 days under saddle to prepare her for a new career. Veeza has a very good foundation both in harness and now under saddle to begin schooling in the discipline of her adopter’s choice. The video reveals Veeza’s training and demeanor. She is a nice sized, substantial mare, which may be hard to tell under the 6′6″ slim rider.

Here in Chattanooga, Veeza has been a joy to work with and ride. Clearly she has been handled gently and carefully, she is very trusting and adores people. She has a clean walk and trot. She will canter some, but also breaks into a rack at times. She prefers to round into the bit rather than come up with her head.
