Dear WISE members and supporters,
The People Like Me resource pack and app was officially launched at a fantastic event during the British Science Festival at the National Media Museum last week. Hosted by broadcaster Steph McGovern, it was enthusiastically received by all those in attendance – see the stimulating debate that took place on twitter #PeopleLikeMe. Places are now available for the first training session, delivered by author Professor Averil MacDonald OBE on 13 October at The Science Museum, London, book here.

WISE tracks progress towards our goal of a critical mass of women in the UK STEM workforce (30%), through the Labour Force Survey, which gives a gender breakdown for different occupations. The latest figures, (August 2015), show women make up 14.4% of all those in STEM occupations. We are pleased but even more determined to push harder to get “1 million more women in STEM”.

A record number of WISE Awards nominations have been received this year and we are currently in the process of longlisting, the shortlist will be announced in the next week. The inspirational nominees are an encouraging reminder of the valuable contribution women make to STEM. Only 2 months to go and tickets are selling fast, don't miss out buy tickets now, members receive a 10% discount.

A warm welcome to our new members joining us this month: Interserve, BAM Nutall, Major Projects Association, NASUWT and over 200 new individual members.

Revolutionary STEM resource
People Like Me is the revolutionary approach using girls’ natural tendency to create and articulate their self-identity with adjectives, to help see themselves working successfully in STEM. We recommend using the pack in an all-girl setting, where girls have been found to feel more comfortable sharing their strengths and aspirations.

WISE also recommends training before delivery of the resource and is offering training in the People Like Me approach for anyone wishing to be licensed to deliver the sessions. This is the opportunity to be recognised by WISE as â€˜licensed’ to deliver the resources to girls. The resource can be downloaded from the website.
