GSK Chairman, Sir Philip Hampton, joins WISE Conference

The Ten Steps - Two Years On

The Ten Steps now has 53 signatory companies! At our recent Ten Steps Measuring Progress Event, hosted by EY, we facilitated the participation of over 30 of them in sharing good practice and discussing future challenges in the retention and development of female talent. As with last year's results the Ten Steps diagnostic revealed that Educate Your leaders was still the step that was most challenging for companies underlining the need for engagement at a senior level.

'The power of parity' report from the McKinsey Global Institute explores the potential economic benefits of narrowing gender gaps across the UK, including in STEM industries. Read the full report here.

The results from Equate Scotland's 'Rising to the Challenge' national survey showed half of all respondents want to see a Scotland wide campaign initiated  to promote STEM careers. The full report can be read here.

Deloitte's research into 'Technology, career pathways and the gender pay gap' found that there was a risk of the gender pay gap worsening in the UK, unless we encourage more girls and women to get in to STEM. Read the report here.

Diversity in Media
Capgemini and Virgin Media joined a panel at a Diversity and Inclusion event organised by the BBC and supported by WISE last month to showcase good practice in the media. The event was extremely well attended and created fascinating dialogue on the need for media and broadcast organisations to match the communities they serve by improving diversity of their workforce.
Women in Rail announce their 20 Most Inspirational women

Women in Rail have announced their list of the 20 Most Inspirational Women in the UK Rail Industry 2016. This report highlights the wealth of great female role models in the rail sector including Jane Simpson who is shortlisted for ‘WISE Woman of the Year Award’. Read the full report here.

New Funding Opportunity Available for Tech Businesses

Innovate UK have opened a funding competition for tech businesses. We encourage women working in tech to apply, to improve gender balance in the recipients of government funding. Further details can be found here

WISE one-day conference at Benenden School

WISE Young Women's Board member Dr Jess Wade collaborated with local schools in Kent to plan a celebration of women in science. The conference was attended by students from 15 local schools for a day of discussion, learning and debate- and major ‘science envy’ after seeing Benenden's STEM centre. WISE has a number of opportunities, for women under 30 years of age, to join the WISE Young Women’s Board to ensure relevance of WISE for next generations and input to WISE strategy from personal experience and insight.  
We welcome applications from employees at ALL WISE member organisations - small, large, business, education, institution and from all over the UK. We are keen to have a balance on the board of different STEM backgrounds, we'd particularly like to hear from women who have qualified via the apprenticeship route.

People Like Me Training
People Like Me is a revolutionary resource to enable effective outreach to inspire girls. Training for teachers, STEM ambassadors and outreach staff is available now. 2 sessions will take place in London on Tuesday 22nd November. There are limited spaces available. Book your place.

A survey of women in the Automotive industry

Stonehouse Search & Selection, a member of WISE, is conducting a fact finding exercise asking women about their experiences working as middle management and senior engineers in automotive engineering. 

If you are working, or have worked in the automotive industry, please share your experience by completing the  Women in Automotive Engineering survey.  The results of this survey will help highlight actions that the sector should take to attract and retain more women.
