July 2016

As the country sees the second woman take up the role of Prime Minister, let us make the most of this opportunity to show girls they can do and be what they want. More than ever, we need the added value from gender balanced teams.
This is as true in science, technology and engineering as it is in business and politics. “Diversity can be very powerful in times of change”, Baroness Neville-Rolfe told a packed gathering of business leaders at last week’s launch of the 2016 Female FTSE Board report. Women now make up 27% of all board members on FTSE 100 companies. Disappointingly, only 24 of the 278 women involved hold executive board roles, and very few of these built their career in science, technology or engineering. WISE analysis of the report shows STEM companies have some catching up to do, with women making up only 24% of the total board members in this group. We will be updating the statistics pages on the WISE website with further analysis, but in the meantime you can read the full report here.

The Women on Boards panel sponsored by Airbus at the WISE Conference on 10 November will debate ideas to get more women onto the boards of STEM companies and more STEM women onto boards across the spectrum of British business, civil society and political life. When girls see more women reaching the top and using science, maths and engineering to make a difference, our job of getting more of them to choose these subjects will be so much easier.
Welcome to new members of the team Nicola, Evelyn and Ellie – read more about them and remind yourselves who does what.

Welcome also to our new corporate members Johnson Matthey, National House Building Council, Graham Construction, Hilti, HR Wallingford, University of Aberdeen, University of Wolverhampton, Birmingham City University, Lord Ashcroft International Business School, Science Impact, The Works Recruitment, AGB Environmental, Intersect Global and all our individual members.

We are currently looking for partners to join with us on this exciting project. Please contact Dr Mhairi Crawford, Development Director at m.crawford@wisecampaign.org.uk for more information.
