Don't Miss the Dead Pirates Free Party Sat. 12/17
It turns out the mysterious Dead Pirates Society is shattering its veil of secrecy on Saturday December 18 from 5:30 to 7:30 with free appetizers from Windows on the Bay and a Treasure Hunt, too. Members only, please. There will be a presentation about what the pirates are and what they do. Sounds like fun! Drinks will be at Monday Night Football prices.
About the Spirits of the Season:
In a spirited announcement, Jon Knowles reports that the $2.50 Drink Specials will continue on Monday Nights December 13, 20 and 27; and at the Dead Pirates' Party on December 18 until closing that night. Those will be the last of the $2.50 specials, because most bar prices are going down January 1! The $2.50 prices applies to draft beer, house wines, and "well" spirits (and our well has no cheap stuff in it!) Your appetizers are always welcome --- but not required --- at any event.
Youth Sailing Party on Friday, December 17...
The youth sailing club is hosting a party on Friday, Dec. 17th from 1-4 p.m. in the main lounge for all Junior Sailors at the BYC. This is an event for all Juniors! You’re welcome to bring a friend to join in the fun. There will be a Wii tournament, and entertainment and board games will be provided.
Please sign up to bring a snack to share…for questions, and to RSVP, call contact Amy Kashiwa @ 734-5085 (email email@example.com)
Schedules for Our Facilities Are Getting Organized...
At the November 2010 meeting of the BYC Board of Trustees, the board followed policy and designated Trustee John Van Haalen to be facilities manager with the authority to approve all facilities' usage requests. You can see the calendar anytime by going to http://byc.org/facilities/.
To request a booking, email firstname.lastname@example.org please include ALL pertinent information: date, time, type of use (commercial or personal) and which part of the club you¹re asking about.
The Annual, Traditional Boat Show Bus Trip is Coming!
It’s time to get your Boat Show Bus reservations in: Great Fun! The date is Saturday, January 22 leaving at 830 AM sharp from the club, and the return leaves the show at 5:30. The cost is $45 per person and includes both the in-the-water and inside shows (you can do both or either, as long as you like during the day). Food and drink is provided both on the way down and the way back, and the big, luxurious eliminates the parking and driving hassle, and if the weather’s bad, the driver deals with it. Besides, you can have fun meeting new BYC friends!
You must sign up and pay at the bar! For questions, Jody Erickson can be contacted at email@example.com and her phone is (360) 223-2119. Matt Dennis is co-chair. Remember, you must be added to the list and pay at the bar. Special thanks to San Juan Sailing for sponsoring the show tickets!
Our Commodore's Column for December...
Happy Holidays! I’ve always loved this time of year. The trimmings on the trees, the smell of cookies baking, the beautiful music – everyone just seems to smile a little more. A special thank you goes out to our resident elves who decorated the Club. Please give a pat on the back to Mike and Maya Allsop, Jane Sylvester, and Missy Steffen. The place looks beautiful!
Thanks, too, to all that turned out for the Lighted Boat Parade! We had 15 boats all decked out in their Christmas best and the holiday spirit was running high. The conditions were as close to perfect as you can find for a cold December evening, and the warmth of the Club as we returned was very welcome. Much thanks goes to Fleet Captain Michele Bodtke’s team for their wonderful organization of the event. Missy and Jane took their usual good care of us on the beautiful review boat, Mystic Eagle. Thank you, Bill and Cindy for your terrific hospitality!! Awards were handed out to a jam-packed clubhouse. Congratulations to Novice Award winners, Eric Nyberg and Matt Ouilette on Madidus Dominia. Your enthusiasm was inspiring! Community Award winner went to DeLayne Brink and Vicki Brighton on At Last. Their beautiful candy canes were a real hit with the judges. A close runner up in that category were the Delcamp’s on Brite Solutions. You could hear those kids singing all across the Bay! Best in Parade went to Fleet Captain Bodtke and Spartan. And Lighted Boat of the Year went to Past Commodore, Ray Poorman and the very spirited SunStar crew. For years now, it has been a closing tradition of the post-parade festivities for PC Joe Coons and his lovely wife, Judy, to lead the rowdy crowd in a sometimes hard-to-recognize rendition of the Twelve Days of Christmas, followed by the always beautiful Silent Night. Joe wasn’t able to make it this year, so we didn’t attempt to challenge ourselves with the 12 Days song, but in Joe’s honor, and PC Terry Tavelli taking the lead, the whole clubhouse joined together for a beautiful rendition of Silent Night.
The holidays are a time to share with family and friends and to remember those that may not be as fortunate as we are. The Sink the Dinghy organization began as a hair-brained idea of a fund-raiser when PC John Gargett drug one of the Opti dinghies into the Clubhouse and challenged us to fill it up with toys. That crazy idea has given life to a full-fledged non-profit organization and our contributions each year are truly awesome. So when you come to the Club, pick up the flyer and give it a read. Learn about the sick little girl and the family that has to live apart for the next year, and then when the hat gets passed around, please consider helping this young family out.
At your service, Commodore Michele Bennett
BYC Member John McCartney writes us...
“BYC members Jim and Diane Neff (Adirondack) met new members Gail Lapetina and John McCartney (Music) in San Jose del Cabo, after completing this year’s Baha Haha (a cruisers’ rally from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas). From left to right to right in the photo here are John McCartney, Gail Lapetina, Jeff and Diane Neff.
“Upon motoring into San Jose del Cabo, Jim and Diane recognized our BYC burgee flying and docked next to us. The first thing they asked was, "Are you BYC members?" The answer was a resounding positive, and we subsequently shared some good times with them while there. Music is currently in La Paz, and both vessels are now cruising in the Sea of Cortez.
“The moral: Keep those BYC burgees flying, you never know where you will meet other members!”

A New Feature Is Being Added to the BYC Roster!
Roster editor Joe Coons advises us that two photos are being added to the roster: one for the Members and one for their Boats! Here's what you need to do to get your pictures in the Roster which will be published in January: Before December 15, send a digital image of you (and your partner, if you have one) to firstname.lastname@example.org. The single image should include both persons if applicable, and be sure the image file name includes the Member's last name! If you have a "head shot", that's perfect...
If you have a boat, you may send another image of it, again being sure that the file name includes the member's name. A side view of the whole boat is best! Joe reserves the right to crop images if necessary and they will be converted by him to black and white. He will acknowledge all images received.
We cannot guarantee all images will be published, but he says he will do his best, remembering this is the first year for this effort! Depending on the number received, we'll have them in the directory or on separate "photo pages".
This should be a great improvement! Someday, there could be as many as 500 images in our yearbook. WOW!
Remember to submit your articles to Jibsheet@byc.org Deadline is Monday noon.
