FIRST SUMMER SOLSTICE RACE REPORT
A few boats made it out for the first BYC Summer Solstice Series race last Friday. Miraculously, a beautiful break of warm sunniness pushed its way through the week of rain and made for a spectacular evening sail in a soft 4-7 knots breeze. Since there were only a few boats for the inaugural race, we opted for Rabbit Start which is typically used in that absence of a race committee. (Description of a Rabbit Start http://www.centerboardyachtclub.com/race/RabbitStart.htm
). The course was up to Post Point and back.
Team Bodtke with Randy Null and Neil Bennett
took home the top prize of a “Bottle of Rum”. Using a purely arbitrary high scoring system, Team Bodtke finished first with 901 points. One point for finishing first, minus 100 points for a surprise spinnaker set and 1000 points for being the only boat with a crew wearing a “Tie Dye” shirt (last week’s Them).
Summer Solstice Series Race #2 is Friday July 13th
. The theme will be “The 80’s – Can’t believe we really liked that synthesized crap!”
. Skipper Meeting at the BYC Clubhouse @ 5 PM for start and course instructions.
The BYC Summer Solstice Series is a very casual event for everyone (friends, family, kids, grandkids, etc.) to promote fun sailing. All boats, cruisers and racers, are welcome. BYO-BBQ and Social Hour at the BYC Clubhouse following the race. --- Jonathan Knowles, Fleet Captain
ANACORTES CRUISE REPORT:
Five boats and four land yachts made their way to Cap Sante for another successful, relaxing weekend.
We hit the docks Friday afternoon and wasted no time gathering for a dock party. Isn’t boating wonderful?
Saturday we spent the day trying to figure out how we were going to haul Cap Sante’s covered party barge back to the BYC. The “Typhoon” seemed to be the best choice. Let’s see, is there enough room on our visitor’s dock for it? It’s only about 23 x 60’. Comes with a nice BarBQue! Do you think they would miss it??? Oh well, let’s come back next year!
Saturday evening Mike Crawford and Mary Burns put together a fabulous Taco Bar. Thank you Mike and Marion Welsh for bringing those frosted brownies we ate too many of, and Al & Karen Callery for the White Russians...YUM!
If you’ve never had Grand Marnier french toast for breakfast, you haven’t lived! Mike Crawford couldn’t keep them coming off the grill fast enough Sunday morning. Did anybody not have seconds? Thank you Mike for being last to get some, and Jane Simica for providing the recipe. I think this one will repeat itself!!!
We all left, feeling like this a “must” cruise for next year. Cap Sante has new beautiful docks, wonderful accommodating staff, and that barge...oh, that barge!!!
Thanks Mike and Crawford and Mary Burns for a wonderful weekend!
SAIL FLEET REPORT & WOMEN ON THE WATER WOW:
Hello Everyone, Last weekend's Jack and Jill Regatta was joined by the CYC's "Romeo and Juliet" race. Five boats with double-handed crews raced in conditions that started a bit wet, but improved throughout the day, results are pending.
Flying Circus continues to lead the Wednesday night PHRF races with Blackfoot only a couple points behind. Dave Steffan and Callipygian are leading the Etchells class with Tom Malone's Salsipuedes in a close second place.
This Weekends W.O.W Women on the Water Regatta will get under way at 10am Saurtday, July 7
. Registration will be from 8am-9am with a mandatory skippers meeting at 9. Thanks to everyone who had been getting crews together, it should be a fun regatta! PHRF racers of any club are welcome, the rules are: the skipper must be a woman, and 2/3 crew must be women. Skippers meeting/registration 0900 Saturday, awards and BBQ to follow. Contact is Sally Poorman 319-0380
. --- Bart Maupin, Sail Fleet Captain
