EDITOR'S CORNER:

Credit for this week's Editor's Column goes to PC John Gargett, in honor and in remembrance of Past Commodore Dan Olson... may he enjoy his final sail into the sunset.

A Sailor for the Lord

Go down to the Sea once more, Old Sailor.
For where else would an Old Jack Tar be?
But riding the waves, and tasting the brine.

Out there, on God's Heavenly Seas.

With fair weather assured every voyage.
No storms. No clouds in the Sky.
And with calm blue waters to sail on.
And ever, bright Stars to steer by.

A fine, sturdy Ship to sail in.
And revered Old Shipmates to crew.
And an Angel riding the Masthead.
And Land, now long out of view.

COMMODORE'S COLUMN
Back next week..

VICE COMMODORE'S COLUMN
The Jib Sheet Editor offered me a guest column this week and who would pass up an opportunity like that?  As most of you who know me, know...community service is very high on my personal agenda, and something which I intend to bring more of to my Commodore year (if you elect me).

For the last three years, the BYC has been host to both the Pink Boat Regatta and the Leukemia Cup; one (Leukemia Cup), a very well respected and established sailing regatta, held nationwide in support of research for the very serious disease of blood born cancer; the other, (Pink Boat), an upstart, defiant message to 'kick breast cancer's ass'. This year, RC Jim Gibson and I have elected to hold a joint regatta and party in hopes of creating a synergistic growth in both regatta's results.

We are calling this cooperative event the 'Cancer Cup', and it's THIS SATURDAY and it's going to be great fun...on the water and off.

See you at the CANCER CUP REGATTA this Saturday, AUGUST 27 2016

EVERYONE will have a great time for a great cause, while eating, drinking, dancing and being merry.

YOU can purchase party tickets for a delicious dinner and beer (or a special Rum Drink) and fantastic Drawing Prizes!

Here's the schedule:
Party starts at 3:00
Dinner at 6:00
Dancing to the ATLANTICS at 7:00!

DAN OLSON
December 23, 1929 -- August 13, 2016
BYC Commodore 1958-1959

Dan Olson was a Past Commodore of the Bellingham Yacht Club (1958-1959) and was very active in promoting sailing throughout the period he was active in the club.  We visited his wife Harriet ”Bunny” today and she requested that we find persons that knew Dan who would be willing to share personal experiences with Dan at A Celebration of Life to be held at the Squalicum Boathouse, 2600 N. Harbor Loop at 1 PM Tuesday, August 23.

”Bunny” has directed that donations in honor of Dan be directed to BYC Youth Sailing Program.  Please contact us if you are willing to speak at the Celebration of Life so that we can coordinate with Bunny’s nephew, Dave, who is organizing the celebration.

Dan’s obituary can be found in Sunday's Bellingham Herald.

I would add that Dan was an influential member of the (Seattle) Sailing Foundation and served for years as the leader of the Bellingham Chapter of the Sailing Foundation. When we took local control of the monies, he provided both legal and sailing advice.

CLUB NEWS

September is right around the corner and for the Club, that means it's election season.  Commodore Mick has put together a Nominations Committee, but they need to know if you're interested in serving!  The BYC prides itself on being a 'volunteer club' and being a Trustee is a great way for you to volunteer and give back to your Club.  Already been a Trustee?  Then please consider running for Fleet Captain -- going 'thru the chairs' is a very rewarding experience.

CRUISE FLEET NEWS
Sucia Island Cruise Report

This past weekend, several BYC boats converged on Sucia Island for our annual Family Luau Cruise.  Friday night, a few of us enjoyed s'mores on the beach (without a fire because of the burn ban, we used marshmallow creme instead) and later got to witness the amazing site of the almost full moon rising over Mt. Baker.  Then Saturday afternoon, we had lots of games for the kids.  The hula hoop contest was very competitive and we had to come up with creative ways to break their concentration or else we would probably still be there!  The exploding watermelon didn't work however, so next year we will need more rubber bands!  After the games we shared a potluck dinner with ham and tropical coleslaw.   The evening ended with one of the spectacular sunsets that Sucia is known for.  Sunday, some brave souls headed out early and were met with high winds and waves.  So, many of us waited it out until the afternoon and some even returned on Monday when things calmed down.  It was a fun weekend and we're already looking forward to next year!  A huge thank you to Dan & Ariane Ringler for all your help with hosting this event and also to all of you who chipped in with the setup and clean up.  We couldn't have done it without you!

Vice Commodore Neil Bennett (Pink Boat Regatta Chair)  and Rear Commodore Jim Gibson (Leukemia Cup Regatta) will be co hosting the Cancer Regatta on Saturday August 27, 2016.  Sailboats in two fleets will race to raise money for the research and cure of two of the most common cancers - Breast Cancer and Leukemia (Blood Borne Cancer) on the same course.  The race course will be in clear view of Boulevard Park.  Jim has ordered up sun and warm wind, while I have ordered more of last year's weather...who will be right?

Sailors, register your boats at BYC.org for Leukemia Cup or Pinkboatregatta.org for Pink Boat Regatta and join in the fun of good-spirited racing and fund raising.  Then join us at the BYC where a $15.00 donation will get you in the door for a fun party and dancing with the Atlantics.

LEARN ABOUT  RACE COMMITTEE
AND HOW TO RUN A RACE!

Our PITCH race officer, John Pedlow, has arranged for a wonderful opportunity for BYC members to learn how to be a race officer and run sailboat races.

BYC is hosting a USSA One Day Race Management Seminar on Saturday, September 24, 2016 from 0900-1700 at BYC.  This is a great chance for you to get current on race management and get certified as a Club Race Officer by US Sailing.

Jeff Zarwell from SFYC and John will be co-instructing the course.  At the end of the day, you will be able to take an online exam and get certified.

The cost of the seminar is $50, which includes all seminar materials, lunch and the online exam.

PUZZLES AND THINGS...

This Week's Photo Contest

Last week's photo was taken on the Columbia River, across from the Gorge Amphitheatre. No one guessed the correct location; Cathy Franklin, John Van Haalen, and Karin Colgroves all thought it was Spieden Island.

This week's scene probably wasn't taken on either the Columbia or the Salish Sea. If you know the location, send your answer to drsteveross@gmail.com.
