A message from the Commodore: Stay Active & Get Involved!
When was the last time you came down to the club?  Did you know that there is something going on every week: Burger Night, Taco Night, Steak Night, Racing, Cruising, Youth Programs… all within a great boating-centric social environment?  Are you interested in getting involved? There are lots of committees and events that need help.   BYC offers great comraderie with a beautiful facility.
Call or E-mail me and we can meet up at the Clubhouse.

Excuse Our Mess
This week, the long overdue painting of the BYC Clubhouse is scheduled.   The project is expected to take around 2 weeks and in this time we’ll be putting on a new façade just below the deck and replace the flat roof in the front.   If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Building & Maintenance Chair, Gary Smith.

Last week was a busy one, with Steak Nite on Friday and the very successful W.O.W. regatta on Saturday. Thanks to all the volunteers who pitched in and made both of these events go so smoothly!

This week is a Fri @ 5 and we have not one, but two special events lined up for it! Tana Chung and Murray Hill are sponsoring a Korean BBQ feed, so be sure to bring salads, sides and desserts to share! Along with that we’ll have a jazz trio playing, courtesy of William Friedson and company! William was at the regatta celebration and offered to bring his jazz group in for a trial run. There will be a tip jar out, so be sure to drop something in to let then know how much we appreciate their efforts!

WED: Burgers hot off the grill!

THUR: Monica is out of town with grandkids so it’ll be burger redux! Bear with us one more week!

FRI: Fri @ 5 with a Korean BBQ and music by William Friedson and company!

SAT: Bar and lounge open. Come on down and enjoy these delightful summer evenings on the deck!

See you in the lounge!  -- Steve

It was a great turnout at this year’s 18th annual Women on the Water (W.O.W) Regatta run by Regatta Chair, Kathy Holland.  This year’s event included over 35 women sailors on 6 boats, racing a long distance course around Eliza Island.   The longer race course venue permitted those experienced women skippers and crew to bring along and share their talents to those who’ve never raced before.   The weather was ideal, a gentle breeze that ranged from 4 to 10 knots.   Congratulations to Donna Olsen and Katura Whitter on the J33 “Keet” for taking the top place finish.   Remember to mark your calendars around mid-July for next year’s W.O.W. event!

More photos from the event can be view on the BYC Flickr Account.
This Wednesday's Racing is the last race in the Dick Johnson Memorial Race Series.    I had hoped to celebrate the end of race series with a Hawaiian Pig Roast hosted by the Dead Pirates Society to honor Past Commodore and member extraordinaire, Dick Johnson, who,  nearly single-handedly,  kept the BYC afloat after the financial calamity of the restaurant failure.  Unfortunately, due to logistical complications on my part, the  Pig Roast was cancelled.    However, I’m requesting that all members, sailors, boaters and friends of Dick, come down to the club on Wednesday Hawaiian Burger Night, grab a beer and share stories  in remembrance of Dick and his wife, Marilyn who had contributed a lifetime of service to the BYC.

I was crunching some numbers last week and had a startling revelation on membership numbers.    The BYC has 341 Members.   Of this, there are 209 Active Members, 48 Non-Residents (live outside 50 mi.), 27 Seniors (70+), 7 Intermediates (21-30), and 7 Juniors (Under 21), 32 Past Commodores, 5 Honorary, and 6 Life (those who purchased a Life Membership option prior to 1973).  So, if you’re around the club much like me (to the annoyance of my wife!), you’ll notice there are approx. 200 members who are actively involved with the club on a regular basis by participating in some programs  such as Sailing, Cruising, Youth; volunteer on a committee or serving on the Board; or attending one of the BYC’s events such as Fri@5,  Opening Day, Commodore Ball, Lighted Boat Parade etc.   We started off the 2014-15 Club year with 47 Members not renewing.   Fortunately, through efforts of the Membership Chair, Tim Thompson, his committee and the BYC Board of Trustees, we brought in 46 new members so far this year.   But, in years prior, we lost -71 members in 2013, -21 in 2012, -29 in 2011, and -42 in 2010 and subsequently had recruited new members to back fill.   However, when you step back and look at the big picture, we essentially change over about 25% of our active members every year.   This is exhausting!!!  And, it's hard work to process and engage the influx of new members.   So, in taking the cliché from the business world, it is much easier to retain good people than it is to replace them.
So… here is my challenge…  We can’t let any member go without a fight!!!   So, if you or a member you know is not particularly involved with the club, then let me know and I’ll personally reach out.  In the 6 years of service on the BYC Board and Commodore, I have nearly touched every facet of this club… every committee, every financial aspect, every contract, every fleet and every event, and I would argue, most every member.
So, if you want to know your way around the club more, meet new members,  help out a little with an event,  run an entire committee,  or take a leadership role in the club with either serving on the Board or becoming a Fleet Captain, let me know.    With involved and engaged membership, the Club becomes a more active and vibrant community of Boaters that will in turn attract more like-minded boaters.    Contact me at 360-303-5465 or e-mail
WOW, What a regatta.  Thanks to all those volunteers that help put on the Women on the Water Regatta last weekend.  W.O.W Regatta Chair, Kathy Holland, Mick Corcroan and Terry Tavelli on Race Committee, Duane running the BBQ, and Mark and Katy behind the Bar.
Another hugely successful Steak Night with over 60 members and guests.  Thanks to Dick Labadie and Mick Corcoran for running the grill, Sandie Labadie on potatoes,  Katy Day on salad, Scott Mc Eniry behind the bar, and Rick Laursen, and the Levines for keeping everything moving smoothly!
This weekend is the BYC Sucia Island Family Cruise. This is a great event hosted by your Cruise Fleet Chairs Vicky Olsen and Angie Santosuosso.  Check the web site for more details.
This week is the BYC Board Meeting…  We are going to talk about some membership classifications, get status from the Fleets, and updates from the Building & Maintenance Committee on the painting and soffit projects.
Hope you’re enjoying the summer cruising season…
Cheers, Commodore Jonathan

This Week's Photo Contest

Paddy Mile Stone, a large rock at the entrance to Maple Bay, B.C., was the subject of last week's picture. No one correctly identified the location.

This week we see a Public House beside a canal. If you know the location, send your answer to
