FRIDAY AT FIVE THIS WEEK...

It's a casual F@5 to get ready for the Christmas Holidays.  Bringing appetizers and finger foods would be great.  Just to give you an idea of what happened on this date, Steve Moore reports:

December 16 in History:
1773American Revolution: Boston Tea Party – The Sons of Liberty disguised as Mohawks dump crates of tea into Boston harbor as a protest against the Tea Act.
1947William Shockley, John Bardeen and Walter Brattain build the first practical point-contact transistor.
1979 - Increases in Gas Prices - OPEC increased prices and gas continued to increase sharply, from 63 cents at the end of 1978 to over a  $1.00 per gallon today

This year it can't help but be better!  See you there...

THE LIGHTED BOAT PARADE RESULTS:

The 2011 Lighted Boat Parade was a good success this year and a delight for all those who participated and were able to view it from boats, special cruises and ashore. 23 boats registered for this year’s 2-day event with peak showing of 20 boats on Saturday.   New comers came out strong this year with 6 entries in the “Novice” Category.  For a change, the weather actually cooperated on both days with uncustomary glassy waters on Friday that created some amazing picturesque reflections off the water.   Bellingham’s Fire Department “Fire Belle” completed this Bellingham traditional holiday event with a display show from the water cannons.

The boat decorations at this year’s event were original and creative, and crews/passengers were festive with song and dance from the decks of the boats.  Although Steve Ross’s Serendipity came out wielding an arsenal of laser canons, proton torpedoes & lightsabers on his Star Wars X-Wing Fighter ready to annihilate the competition,   he was not prepared for the Palm Tree Hawaiian barge rocking a hula party complete with Ginger Bread Man on the deck of Eric Nyberg's Northwest Passage.

There were five judges on the review boat that scored entries based three criteria: Holiday Spirit, Creativity and Technique/Visibility.    The results were combined to determine the top three awards.  Additionally, the top novice boat was awarded the Novice Grand Prize.

1      Northwest Passage, Eric Nyberg, Lighted Boat of the Year
2      Serendipity, Steve Ross, Best in Parade
3      Triple Net, Eric Larson, Community Award
4      Clear Cloud, Timothy Whiteman
5      Brite Solutions, Ron & Roxy DelCamp
6      L.O.L., Nancy Hart, Novice Grand Prize
7      Cool Change, Alvard
8      Agnes Jean, Rocky Champagne
9      C, Mike Corning
10    Mental Floss, Randy Carr

I would like to thank all the BYC Members who helped out, including Steve Ross for holding a Light Boat Parade Design & Safely Seminar and Joe Coons for coordinating the skippers for the review boat.  Also, thanks go out to Wheel & Keel, CYC Bellingham, Port of Bellingham and NW Explorations for providing the review boat. --- Jonathan Knowles, Fleet Captain

TOYS FOR TOTS IS ROLLING ALONG:

Make the holidays bright for area youngsters. Help the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation provide Christmas joy to less fortunate children.  You can bring new unwrapped toys, books, and items to BYC and drop off in the Toys for Tots box.  Toys will be delivered to our local Toys for Tots and given to kids.  Your donation helps to make sure no child is left empty handed for Christmas day. Click here for the illustrated announcement.

THE CLUB'S TV'S GET "BYC NEWS CHANNEL":

New Members' names, upcoming events, bar specials, and other news will soon be announced on the Club's TV monitors!  This new service is being co-ordinated by Member Jeff Vaughan.  You can check it out the next time you are at the Club.  That means that if you have any information that you would like to appear on the Club's "News Channel," you can submit it to him at ja_vaughan@msn.com.  When you submit, PDFs and information should be in "horizontal" or landscape orientation.  Thanks! --- Marketing Steering Committee

JANUARY 28 BOAT SHOW BUS: RESERVE NOW

Vice Commodore Jody Erickson now reports: "We have less than 25 seats left on the Bus to the Boat show Saturday, January 28....After the first week of Jan we will probably open the seating up to other Boating clubs...".

If you've not joined the bus crowd before, here's what you get:  Tickets for both the in-the-water and Safeco Center shows; free transportation; lots of breakfast snacxks and pre-dinner snacks, too; liquid refreshments both ways; and no parking or driving (or traffic) hassle.  You can sign up at the Bar and be sure of a seat.  Here's the Blurb.

Jody would also like to have a meeting for anyone wanting to help with this project on Tuesday Dec 27th @ 6:00 at the Club.

THIS WEEK’S PHOTO QUIZ

Steve Ross, our quizmaster, tells us last week’s picture is of Kylemore Abbey in Ireland. Kylemore is on a quiet lake in the Connemara region – for more information visit http://www.kylemoreabbey.com/. It was correctly identified by Meredith Ross (no, she doesn’t get insider information!).

For this week, we're not on a quiet lake – and there be monsters nearby (notice the fin in the center of the picture).  Know where the photo is?  Please send your guesses to steve.ross@wwu.edu

DID YOU KNOW?
