I sincerely hope that everyone got what they wanted for Christmas... be it time with friends and family, or just some peace and solitude. Neil and I had a bit of both this weekend, and my apologies for the tardiness of this edition.
And now we look to New Year's and 2017!  I, for one, am quite content to put 2016 in my rear view mirror and look forward to the promise of a fresh trip around the sun.  HAPPY NEW YEAR!

TUES:  27 Dec: Bar opens at 5; WED:  28 Dec: Bar opens at 5; THURS: 29 Dec: Monica's Mexican;  FRI: 30 Dec:  Bar and lounge open at 5;  SAT:  31 Dec:  New Year's Eve

For those of you who were unable to attend the December 14, 2016 Town Hall Meeting, please read below. Our fiscal year runs from October to September. At the close of September 2016 the club was in solid financial condition. We set income and expense goals every year for providing great club experiences for members as well as maintaining our assets.

Total Income – $388,350
Budget- $393,640           99%

Cost of Goods - $49,888
Budget - $48,804         102%

Gross Income - $338,462
Budget-344,640           98%

Member Expenses - $331,956
Budget - $341,723      97%

Net Ordinary Income - $6,506
Budget $3,113            209%

Our income is from Dues, Food and Beverage, Youth Sailing Program, Building and Facilities Rentals, Race Fleet, Regatta, Roster, Ship Store, and Miscellaneous income sources.  Our challenge is to balance all of our income streams so that we keep the income stream steady as a whole, while some individual sources may dry up.  The Board’s recent approval of hiring Steve Hayward to begin managing all our building and facilities bookings is an important component of our financial growth and long term stability.
The value of a sound financial foundation is that this allows us to invest in our building, both to maintain what we have, as well as create new opportunities for club member benefits.  Currently, Trustee Mike Allsop is investigating options to improve our youth sailing, live aboard and reciprocal members’ experiences, along with saving the club some utility expense via new heating system, improved bathrooms and installation of a washer and dryer.  Please feel free to call or email Mike directly with any improvement ideas you may have so he can add them to his list.

Enough Business!

Spring and summer will be here before we know it, but first is the BOAT SHOW BUS.  We are still looking for someone to step up and organize this annual, traditional trek to the Seattle Boat Shows.  If YOU are interested, please contact me or Shaun and we will point you in the right direction.

Editor's Note:  As you'll read in the Bar Manager's report, the call has gone out to try and secure a bartender (or 2) for New Year's Eve... if that falls through, not to worry!  We'll just have a:

Bring friends, relatives, and appetizers.  Our goal is to watch the ball drop in Times Square at

9pm.  We could all be snug in our beds by 10:30!!!

Dear BYC members:
Advertising your company or business through the Bellingham Yacht Club gains you direct marketing access to enthusiastic boaters and boat owners in Bellingham, Whatcom County and beyond. Over 30 BYC members currently advertise with the BYC and its various forms of community interaction. In addition to supporting the club that hosts club and community events such as Opening Day on Bellingham Bay, Lighted Boat Parade, Junior Ski To Sea, and major local sailboat racing regattas... your advertisement will help the BYC mission, “to foster recreational boating activities in Bellingham and vicinity”. You will also help support BYC community events such as Whatcom Community High School Sailing, Bellingham Sailing Foundation, ‘Sink the Dinghy’ community support fundraising, US Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Local Bellingham Power Squadron and the Sea Scouts.
Advertising with the Bellingham Yacht Club in 2017 includes:
  • A one third page advertisement in the BYC Yearbook and membership roster and on the BYC website. With either of these you can choose to include a brief caption with your member bio or business information.
  •  Listing in the BYC Jib Sheet, mailed weekly to the entire membership with a hyperlink to your company’s website. The Jib Sheet reaches over 375 members, 52 weeks per year, which is over 19,500 emails per year.
  •  Publish up to 4 special offers/events about your business in the BYC Jib Sheet newsletter and up to 4 special offers/events about your business on the BYC Facebook page.
This tremendous advertising program is extended from the 2015 rates of $150 inclusive of all of the above benefits. This is an extraordinary value to both you and the BYC membership.
Please contact Commodore Neil at if you’re interested. Please include business card graphics and a short 1 to 2 sentence member bio. The deadline for this production is January 15, 2017. If you have any questions email me at
Thank you from me and the entire BYC membership for your support of your club.

A Back-Up Jibsheet Editor
PC Michele is looking for someone (or 2!) to provide back-up when she is out of town and to just learn the system.  It's really not too hard!

How did it get to be the day after Christmas already? A White Christmas, no less! And almost the New Year! Holy time warp, where has it all gone?

The Social Committee is trying to put together a traditional New Year’s party at the club next Saturday the 31st. We need a bartender volunteer! Anyone stepping up? Maybe do shifts? Let your trusty bar manager know!

We’ve (finally) completed installation of the draft beer service on the back wall of the bar area. The next step is to contact the Liquor Board to request approval to allow minors in the upper lounge so we can accommodate member family groups in the formerly restricted area. One step at a time, or as they say in old Mexico, poco a poco!

Note that starting the first of the year, the club bar will be open Tuesday through Friday evenings. We’re continuing to hold weekends open for members’ private functions and special events. Book your reservations by contacting the Facilities Mgr. More info will soon be forthcoming!

We’re mulling over a number of exciting (or at least semi-exciting) ideas for service upgrades and updates at the club. Input is appreciated! We plan to bring back the Burger and Brew special for the racing season, and I understand the Race Committee is planning upgraded bennies for the hardworking RC volunteers! There is also some discussion of introducing Happy Hour specials at various times! Stay tuned for more!

Here’s the skinny for this week:

TUE: Bar and lounge open at 5!

WED: Bar and lounge open at 5!

THUR: Monica’s Mexican, with the best carne asada north of the border and those tasty bean burritos!

FRI: It’s a Blue Moon Fri @ 5, so “come on down!”

SAT: New Year’s Eve party? Volunteers needed! Contact Linda Levine for more and watch your email for announcements!

See you in the lounge!
