One of Our Own will Perform at the Bellingham Music Club, Wed., Oct. 5th at 10:30 a.m.

Tracy Rhodus was a very promising soprano at WWU’s Music Department who worked at the BYC as a waitress and barmaid in the days when we had a big restaurant & bar operation.

She had an extraordinary voice, and her college career was highlighted by her winning the lead role in a number of operatic productions here, particularly the role of Queen of the Night in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, a very challenging part...this was in the early 90’s.  At one point, we had a fundraiser to help her with her college tuition.

Subsequently, she went to Rice U. in Texas to get her masters and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree.  Now married, Dr. Tracy Rhodus Satterfield recently moved to Vancouver, B.C. and is establishing herself there.  She is on the faculty of the Vancouver International Song Institute.

Now, Tracy may have some fans and followers who would enjoy hearing her sing at a free program sponsored by the Bellingham Music Club on the first Wed. of October, October 5th, at 10:30 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church off Cornwall Avenue at  Texas St.

There is a tea after the program at 11:30 to talk with Tracy.

Another Fabulous Dale Jepsen One Design Regatta!

The often turbulent and at times  unpredictable waters of Bellingham Bay did not disappoint this past weekend as sailors from Portland to Vancouver arrived  to participate in the 2011 Dale Jepsen One Design Regatta.

Saturday brought strong wind and big waves which caused 2 Lasers to lose a mast and an FJ to nearly sink.  Safety boat drivers got to see  upside down 505s and the spectacle of an A Class Catamaran righting itself. Racing was ended early (after 3 races) when 25 knot sustained winds kept all 4 safety boats fully engaged in the white caps. At the end of the day, back at the club, ear to ear grins were the norm as sailors enjoyed a steak dinner and partied into the night.

Sunday started ominously with 25 to 28 knot winds howling through the bay.  The race committee set up early and made the call for a shore postponement.  Many of the sailors on shore breathed a sigh of relief, unwilling to rig with the large black clouds rolling in from Fairhaven.  After about 45 minutes of waiting, the green light was given to go and enjoy a truly spectacular second day of racing.  The race committee worked in harmony to bang off 5 races in near perfect conditions.

Following the weekend's work, Jamie Ashton and Terry Tavelli scratched their heads downstairs to make sense of the results and to accurately score all of the participants. The party was again in full swing again, with pizza dinner and prize give aways from West Marine, Samson Rope, and West Coast Sailing.  Kyle Martin from Vancouver B.C. took home the over all trophy and defended his title for a second year.

The Dale Jepsen One Design Regatta has consistently managed to put on a fantastic event.  It could not be done without the help of the more than 30 volunteers who have done everything from loaning out a boat to cooking potatoes.  I can not name every one, but I would like to give special recognition to Terry Tavelli, Jamie Ashton, Jonathan Knowles, Randy Nulle, Jody Erickson, Paul Beich, Dick Grimshaw, Geri Rae Kersey, Blaine Pedlow from The Community Boating Center,  and many, many more.

Next year's event will be held on September 15th and 16th.  Mark your calenders for another truly awesome and very satisfying good time!

The 2011 Dale Jepsen One Design Regatta was sponsored by Samson Rope, West Marine, and West Coast Sailing! Thank You Sponsors!

BAR REPORT

Bartender Contact Terminated, Going Back to All Volunteer
It was a tough decision, but with the conclusion of Wednesday Club Racing and slow bar sales except for Friday’s @ Five, the bar & lounge committee has terminated the Bartender Contract with Windows on the Bay.  The contract with Tom Kilpatrick/WOTB required a 2 day minimum plus management fees and the it just did not pencil out.

We now have over 45 Volunteer Bartenders to fill out the winter schedule.  We’ve paired up volunteers in anticipation they will, along with a new Programs Committee, come up with events to draw members to the Clubhouse.  Although the WOTB contract is terminated, it’s anticipated that we will continue to use paid bartenders on busy nights and events.

BUMMED about losing Sam and Levy, and asking what you can do?  Well, if we increase utilization of the Clubhouse and recruit more members, we could possibly keep hired bartenders.  So take charge in organizing events that will draw in members.  Under the WOTB contract, paid bartender plus management fees ran around $100 a night.  It requires $250 in sales just to cover the bartending fees and overhead costs.  That boils down to 70 beverages.  So, an event would need to draw a minimum of 40 members just to cover bartending costs.

Your feedback is welcome.

Winter Clubhouse Hours Effective Oct 1st thru March 30th
Good news! Since there are enough volunteer bartenders, we will NOT be closing on Saturdays.  Staring on October 1st, the Winter Clubhouse Hours will be:
Monday:              5:00-9:00 PM (Only for Monday Night Football)
Tuesday:              CLOSED
Wednesday:      CLOSED
Thursday:            5:00-9:00 PM
Friday:                  5:00-10:00 PM
Saturday              5:00-9:00 PM
Sunday:                                CLOSED

If you feel like there is a need to keep it open more nights and hours, please contact me and let’s discuss it.

BYC’s Monday Night Football:  Mon Oct 3 Indianapolis Colts at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
