COMMODORE'S COLUMN
The Big 20

Namaskar!!!
I am convinced that Spring is right around the corner; and if I have to go to Louisiana to prove it, I will!!! Yes, enough of cold dog food earning trips to Alaska; I’m going to NOLA to dig up some really good dog grub. I will be schmoozing at the Loyola University School of Law Annual Longshore Conference learning about great new ways to cook Jambalaya and shuck oysters. In between I will be listening to legal experts talk about case law and implications on the everyday practice of a vocational counselors’ evaluation of injured employees covered under the Longshore and Harbor Workers Compensation Act of 1927.
My turn of excitement began last Thursday with a visit to the sawbones knife cutter surgeon. He said, ‘my work here is done’ and the rest is up to you so get to it!  Big thanks to Len Kolodychuck, MD at St. Joseph Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Clinic and Dave Steffan, PT (former BYC member) for putting back together what a sloppy fitting Wellington boot and a rock took apart (Humpty Dumpty should have been so lucky). My excitement continued on Friday with Vickie and Karin’s great cruising program presentation…we are going to have a great, fun year with lots of good adventure!
I am also very excited about upcoming Opening Day, with the theme of Latitudes and Attitudes, it leers at the imaginative possibilities of boat decorating, tropical cocktails and relaxed seafood snacks prepared by Buffet-humming Pirates. Be on the lookout at your mailbox for those hand-mailed envelopes sent by Fleet Captain McEniry.
Closer on the horizon is the March 22 (Wed following the March Board of Trustee meeting) General Membership and Town Hall meeting. There will be two very important By-Law changes to be considered by membership and voted upon.  Put this on your calendar now and watch for the formal announcement.
In closing, this morning at 7:30 I was somewhere I hadn’t been in over 8 months…CROSSFIT X. Coached by another BYC member, Shasonta Delmage, I put myself back on the road to regaining my strength and flexibility (and hopefully ability to wear more than the brown or black travel pants that are the only casual clothes I fit into right now…sorry). By the time I reach the correct Latitude of health and fitness, I will be ready for a little Attitude readjustment and relaxation…and plan to enjoy every last dead lift, goblet squat and lunge along the way, because,
“I will not cast a wake upon our burgee”,

CLUB NEWS

Roberta McCord
1936 - 2017

Roberta McCord crossed the sea one last time to be with her Lord on February 13, 2017.  For those who knew her, reflections on what she meant to our Bellingham Yacht Club are many.
For those who did not know Roberta, she was as dedicated to our club as anyone could be.  With her husband, Past Commodore Chuck McCord (whom she married in Inati Bay) she worked tirelessly to help build the Club to what it is today.  When we became an all-volunteer club, she defined the word volunteer. And at the 30+ Commodores Ball’s Roberta and Chuck attended, they were the best dancers on the floor.
In Memory of Roberta…

May you see the way wherever the journey takes you, sailing safely over water.

May you find treasure in Heaven's infinite variety, beauty and surprise.

May you hear the ocean's music in every shell you hold to your ear.

May the Lord fill your boat with the insight, laughter, generosity and love you gave to us.

A Celebration of Life for Roberta will be held Saturday, March 18 at 3:30 PM at Christ Community Church - 4600 Guide Meridian Bellingham, WA.

Editor's Note: Roberta's obituary was in Saturday's Bellingham Herald.  She was quite an accomplished lady!!  And her love and adoration for both Chuck and the BYC were an inspiration to a young member like me (back in the day...).

BAR MANAGER'S CORNER
NEWS FROM THE BAR

STEAK NITE CANCELLED THIS MONTH!

Our trusty but tired outdoor grill is on its last legs, so to speak, and is just not up to another round of steaks. It is about to be retired and replaced by a spiffy new unit, but the soon-to-be new grill is still being researched and won’t be in place in time for this week’s event. Stay tuned, and we’ll try to get the replacement on line in time for next month’s event!

Here’s the skinny for this week:

TUE: Bar and lounge open at 5! Come on down for the weekly Tues. eve jam session! Bring a guitar and sing along with the crew!

WED: Panni style grilled sandwiches hot off the grill by Chef Dick!

THUR: Monica’s Mexican, with the best carne asada north of the border and those tasty bean burritos!

FRI: Bar and lounge open at 5! Come on down and hang with fellow clubbers over a libation or two!

See you in the lounge!

Steve

CRUISING NEWS

Shakedown Cruise to Anacortes

Our first cruise is March 31 - April 2 at Cap Sante Marina in Anacortes and is a joint cruise with the Bellingham and Friday Harbor Power Squadrons.  This will be a great start to the cruising season and a chance to make new friends.  We have the party tent reserved for the weekend and we're planning a Docktail Party on Friday night and a Potluck Dinner on Saturday night. (We'll be serving barbecued chicken hot off the grill, so please bring a side dish or dessert to share.)  Come by boat, car, or RV.  We've made a group reservation at Cap Sante, so go to crusing.byc.org by March 15 to register so we can assign you a slip.  Hosted by Ken Larsen and Tammy Golden.

Cruise Registration Open Now

Thank you to all who came to our Cruising Kickoff Event on Friday!  We have a great year of cruising planned.  Go to cruising.byc.org for information and to sign up for cruises.  Sign up soon to help us with our planning.  In addition to the usual slate of weekend cruises, we have added 2 distance cruises to the schedule this summer:

July 6 - 13 Victoria/Sidney

August 19 - 27 Princess Louisa Inlet

If you want to join us for these distance cruses please sign up now.  These cruises require a little more planning and we need a headcount.  If you have any questions, please email Vickie Olson at olsonvj@aol.com.

2017 BSF Youth Fleet
Silent Auction and Salmon Bake
May 13th

Please join the BYC youth fleet for our 3rd Annual BSF benefit dinner and silent auction. This event is our most important of the year to support our “learn to sail”, junior and high school race team programs.

The past two auctions have been incredible successes and a fun evening. We have financed the purchase of two 29er dinghy’s, a 10 boat Opti trailer and a used Zodiac RIB from money raised. This has allowed us to improved our fleet and the facilities of our learn to sail program and put as many racing sailors on the water as Seattle.

I hope you can find the time to attend and donate.
With much appreciation

Mike Powell, Youth Fleet Captain

SAIL FLEET NEWS

Ahoy Sailors!

Bellingham Yacht Club is hosting a town hall PHRF NW Sub Regional meeting. President Eric Nelson, Chief Handicapper Neil Bennett, the directors and handicappers from the region will be there to answer questions and inform about PHRF NW. Please join us and help put PHRF racing in the hands of sailors. We welcome all positive input for making our sport better and to serve sailors. We can't all race one design so let's together figure out how to make it better for us all.

Meeting will be in the lower lounge area in the BYC Wednesday 3/15 at 6:30 PM. Burgers or Panini  sandwiches will be provided and your favorite beverage can be purchased at the bar. Please spread the word to racing and cruising sailors, let's make this a huge turnout so we can grow our sport.

Thank you,

Dave Steffen

PUZZLES AND THINGS

This Week's Photo Contest

The remains of a ship repair facility in Nelson's Dockyard, Island of Antigua, were the subject of last week's photograph. John Van Haalen and Terry Tavelli correctly identified the location, while Jamie Foti mentioned a similar place a bit farther afield.

This week we see two animals in a heated race, one of several whimsical statues on a courthouse lawn. If you know the location, send your answer to drsteveross@gmail.com.
