MEANWHILE, WHY ALL OUR ON LINE STUFF WENT NUTS LAST WEEK:
Our BYC.ORG Website was hacked! Ray Poorman,
our Member who provides us with our web hosting services, has struggled for the past week to get us back up and running. It's easy for us to complain, but it's hard for Ray to solve our problems...look what he wrote me:
"Joe, the issue is not the hosting! The problem is the amount of old content, misc. forms that have been created, old scripts, etc., that are being hacked over and over. The reason things aren't working now is because the site was hacked last Friday and I had to clamp down on all security, specifically writing to the temporary directory. It takes hours and it's like searching for a needle in a haystack to figure these things out. The problem is we have no one competent enough to do this kind of thing. The web site committee is trying hard and I'm helping them, [one of the issues was credit cards and we finally squelched that] but everyone thinks web sites are "easy" ... and the fact is they are incredibly complex especially the size of ours. It's like saying "maintaining a 16' runabout is the same as a 110' superyacht."
I compounded the problem:
I rushed out yesterday's Jib Sheet and forgot an item or two...I had been away Saturday-Monday on a training cruise so I didn't put enough time in editing, and as soon as the Jib Sheet dated yesterday went out, I started getting corrections from our contributors.
It may be a few days before our BYC.ORG/MEMBERS site has the calendars and all that other stuff in good order again. And then, you can please thank Ray, Terry Tavelli, Sally Poorman, Michele Bodtke, and any others who have labored to straighten it out!
Meantime, I invite you to join me and Ray suggesting that all the d--n hackers go do something to themselves that's anatomically impossible...
MEANWHILE, PLEASE TAKE A LOOK AT THIS ISSUE, WHICH IS COMPLETE AND CORRECTED ... AND THANKS FOR YOUR PATIENCE!
Joe Coons, Jib Sheet Editor-in-Chief
THE FORMAL ELECTION NOTICE
Important Election Reminder:
Three meetings to come are Important!
Nominations Meeting, (tomorrow)
, Wednesday, September 5, 6:00 pm. Come down to the club and be part of the process! Members who have already agreed to run with our Nominations Committee will be announced, and nominations will be accepted from the floor to round out the slate of candidates for Fleet Captain and the four Board of Trustee positions.
Then, on next Wednesday, September 12
, we will have the “Meet the Candidates Night”, a town-hall format where you will have a chance to hear from each our candidates.

BYC PITCH REGATTA A HUGE SUCCESS….AGAIN!
The 39th BYC PITCH ‘Running of the Ton’s’ Sailing Regatta was, once again, a huge success and the BYC Membership made this happen. From all the members who showed convened at the Friday’s at Five to greet the racers and Saturday to eat and dance, to the Dead Pirates for grilling, to Tom and the Windows on the Bay staff, to the unsaid and unsung members who formally and informally volunteered at critical moments, to Joe and Carol and their delightful band, ‘The Salteen’s’, to the Race Committee, and, last but not least, to Bishop Kevin for arranging for some of the best weather for sailboat racing conditions ever seen on Bellingham Bay, THANK YOU!
It has been a blast to be part of this great event for the last four years. I know you all will give Randy Nulle the same enthusiastic support next year and in the years to come you’ve given me. --- Neil Bennett, 2012 Race Co-Chair
A NOTE FROM A SPONSOR:
September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. It's a great time to inquire as rates for this particular type of coverage are more affordable than in the recent past. Even if you currently have life insurance, you can have your policy reviewed by representative at The Unity Group, to ensure you have the best coverage at the best rate. For more information please visit our website at www.theunitygroup.com or call us at 800.339.9270.
SMILES ALL AROUND....
That's what Terry and Jan Robertson were providing to the crowds on Labor Day weekend when they pulled up to the outer "B" breakwater on their 48' Hatterass with the "Just Married" signs soaped on all the windows. I wish you could have seen them, full of grins and moon-y eyed as they got congratulations from all the passing friends and strangers. Terry has denied the rumor that he married Jan so that he could get help refurbishing Oz; she interjects that she is, indeed, experienced at varnishing...
POETS COVE CRUISE SOON!
This will be the 8th Annual Cruise for the club to Poets Cove Resort & Spa on September 14, 15 & 16 (Same weekend as always, 3rd Weekend in September).
Every year the Autumn Equinox marks a day of equal light and darkness. A meaning of the Celtic Autumn Equinox Alban Elfed is “Light of the Water.” Around the world, from Persia, to China, the end of the summer and beginning of autumn is a special time.
In the tradition of celebrating the end of the season, this popular and intimate cruise is one of our most popular, in part because of the friendships, the enjoyment of the Saturna Island Wine & Harvest Festival, as well as relaxing in one of the nicest locations in the San Juan and Gulf Islands.
Rooms - Poets Cove has been able to open up 8 rooms in the lodge, and they have one cottage and one two bedroom villa available at a special rate for the Bellingham Yacht Club. This is a great cruise to bring people who do not have a boat to stay on. Prices are: $199 for the Lodge Rooms (Regularly $239); $329 for the Villa Room (Regularly $389); $349 for the Cottage (Regularly $409). To secure a room, you need to contact the Front Desk (888) 512-7638 and tell them you are making a reservation for the Bellingham Yacht Club. You need to get your reservations in by September 9th.
For those who plan to come by boat, you also you need to get your reservations in by September 9th and here is the contact information for the Marina (be sure and tell them you are with the Bellingham Yacht Club): For The Marina Slips – (250) 629-2111 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to make your reservation. Due to enhanced security regulations you need to make your reservation directly.
Here is the preliminary schedule:
Dock Party at 1700-1900 on Friday Night. (I don't know what boat I’ll be on yet, but it will be on the dock!)
Potluck Breakfast on Saturday at 0900-1030. This will be on the end of the dock where we always hold it. (You will see the tent or the tables!)
Saturday from 1130-1500: Saturna Wine Festival, Art Walk or Ganges Farmers Market
Saturday night from 1830-????? Autumn Equinox Dinner.
Sunday morning is a breakfast if you want to join us in Auroras Restaurant.
Call me if you want more details! Patti and I look forward to seeing you. Questions? Call John or Patricia Gargett
