We now have heard from two reliable sources about the death of two of our BYC Members.
Jim Langei and his wife Sterling Taylor passed away early this morning, March 30, as the result of the fire in Boathouse G.  They were trapped in their 42’ sundeck Nova trawler when the fire engulfed the boat; it is not known where the fire started, but first reports indicate it might have begun elsewhere in that long condominium boathouse while they slept.  It was one of them that called 911 emergency services this morning to indicate the house was on fire and they were trapped.
Jim and Sterling were married at the BYC recently.  He was a loan officer at the Whatcom Educational Credit Union, and had been recently attending various banking schools to upgrade his skills in that field.  Jim was very active in the BYC, and also served as an editor of the Jib Sheet and as one of the volunteers monitoring our visitors’ dock.  He was also a frequent volunteer bartender and a willing worker on various building and house projects.
Sterling is perhaps best known to Members as proprietress of the America’s Cup coffee stand at the top of the dock by Gate 3; in fact, she was planning to open on Monday, April 2 and had stocked the stand accordingly.  She, too, was someone who frequently pitched in to help with Club projects.
When Sterling and Jim were together they were exciting, fun, and could cut whirlwind figures on a dance floor or at a party...but beneath the seemingly carefree exteriors were two serious people who had the ability to really focus on their friends, always ready to help.
Needless to say, they will always be missed at our Club, on the docks around Gate 3, and in the community.
Our thoughts and sympathies go to their families and friends.
We invite any and all BYC Members and friends of Sterling and Jim to come to the Club today or this evening to share memories of Jim and Sterling; it will be open.  Our chaplain, Bishop Kevin Allen will be on hand during some of these times.
Also, a schedule note:  Because Jim and Sterling were Youth Sailing Boosters, the Junior Sailing Benefit Dinner will go on tomorrow night (Saturday, March 31) at 5:00 p.m. (cocktails) and 6:00 p.m. (dinner) as scheduled.  Information can be found here.
