MEET THE CANDIDATES NIGHT:  In compliance with our By-Laws, this Wednesday is your chance to meet the candidates for the Board an Officers of your Club.  See you there...See Commodore Jody's column below, and try to be there to be informed about your Club's leadership...
THE DALE JEPSEN ONE DESIGN REGATTA WANTS YOU! We are now just a few days away from the Dale Jepsen One Design Regatta this weekend, the Club's largest one-design event of the year. Sailors from Portland to Vancouver BC have registered and we are hoping for another great party on and off the water. We could STILL use a few more folks to help us out, to step up and show the region what a fantastic place Bellingham is, and what a great club BYC is. These events can only happen with the support of the membership. Here are our needs:
  • We could use a couple more on the water to be on the race committee boat.
  • We could use a few more people at the club after racing to help with food prep on Saturday.
  • We could use a couple super-responsible folks to help watch the beer keg to keep our liquor license safe on Saturday afternoon/ evening.
This is a really fun event. I have been chair for 9 years, and it just keeps getting better. Please help us to have the best one yet by stepping up. We will have a meeting this Thursday, Sept. 12, at 6:30PM. Plan on attending and please contact at to say you can help. It will be much appreciated. --- Mike Poulos

THE NEW CLUB YEAR BEGINS OCTOBER 1, and the renewal dues invoices for the year were mailed the week of September 2. Also included were an important letter from Michele Bodtke, our Vice Commodore, as well as an interest sheet. If you have not received your invoice, please let me know. (A very special, special thank you goes to Kevin & Kaela Schwitter, Larry & Kristi Blanchard, and Sharon Chang & Daryl Lin for helping make quick work of assembling the packages for mailing. What a team!)
If you have enrolled in BYC's Direct Debit program (over 70 families already have, and are saving themselves monthly bill-paying effort, and us a lot of office time), you can elect to have your dues payment automatically debited from your bank account by sending me an email ( to that effect. For the rest of you, now is a good time to consider enrolling in the Direct Debit program. A form for that was included in the mailing.
Quarterly payments: As per our Board of Trustees, any Active member may elect to pay dues quarterly but must enroll in the direct debit program to do so. No partial dues payments will be accepted by any other method.
Thank you for your thoughtful cooperation. Let me know if you have any questions. --- Mike Welsh, Assistant Treasurerl

MARK YOUR CALENDAR NOW: Sunday, October 13 is the next BYC Jazz Supper Club, and once again the Committee has got a great group coming. See the announcement here; details including ticket prices will be out shortly.

LAST WEEK'S FACTOID:  It's Pam Heward who is a wonderful painter. Pam and husband Bill are great boosters of our BYC, and her art works are making her name well-known among those who know good painting... [If you have a BYC Member we should salute, send details to]
JIB SHEET EDITOR LIVING IN PAST? Joe Coons, the Jib Sheet Editor, in a recent article called the Dale Jepson One Design Regatta by its old name.  Poor Joe! He has promised to go to sleep each night at 6:30 mumbling "DJOD, DJOD, DJOD..."
TASK TEAM REPORT: We have one new "hot project" this week replacing dining room ceiling tiles (Team Members were notified), and we still need a few more occasional "clean the BBQ" volunteers before we take over that task. Read here for the full Task Team story.

WHY I RENEWED MEMBERSHIP EVERY YEAR FOR 35 YEARS: "I joined the BYC in 1974, and renewed my membership every year I was here thereafter (I was away for three years). I sometimes thought about quitting when dues were due, but then I realized that many of my good friends were here. In 1986, when the Club was desperate, I was asked to serve as Finance Chairman. That got me involved besides eating, drinking and occasionally dancing. Even though I only owned boats for 19 of those years, I still stayed in.  I enjoyed coming to social events like Fridays at Five, and I liked the Club Scrubs and other work projects. Over all those years I grew to feel like I had an investment in this Club and its success, and I wanted to see it thrive. Later, after I had served as Commodore, I got to be a "free dues Member", so now, like many other Past Commodores, I contribute the current dues amount each year to our fund to improve the place. I can't think of any other way to spend around 400 bucks --- $8/week --- that gives me so much continuing return!  --- Joe Coons

THE HIGH SCHOOL SAILING TEAM is about to start its 5th year this fall with kids from Squalicum, Sehome and Bellingham High Schools.  This fall the team will have routine practices out at Lake Whatcom and compete in 6 regattas around the northwest including the Dale Jepson One Design regatta.  The team will also be hosting the Northwest Interscholastic Sailing Association’s Singlehanded Championships on September 21st and 22nd at the Bellingham Yacht Club.  In this event the kids will be racing Lasers with the winners qualifying for Nationals in November.  The team is excited for a great fall season.
If you know anyone who might be interested in joining the high school sailing team, have them contact Scott Wilson (360.303.1759) for more information.  Or visit our website at

INTERESTING NEW BYC MEMBER'S BLOG: Steve Ross, retired WWU prof, has started a blog that's interesting. I enjoyed the piece on Bargeing in Europe...go to

GET YOUR RESERVATION IN FOR POET'S COVE! Once again John Gargett is chairing this annual cruising event.  It gets bigger each year, and is FUN! This year's details are here. Register early for this popular excursion. This is a great cruise...

THANKS, QUINN & ROBERTA SELSOR: They have given a variety of boat items to the Pacific Marine Exchange to benefit the Youth Sailing program --- what a creative way to support this important BYC activity! (Quinn & Roberta are moving south to be closer to Seattle and children and grandchildren, and also closer to their Oro Valley, AZ winter place.)  Such a thoughtful and easy idea for all of us!
Wow, what a weekend. The weather cooperated and the Commodores Picnic was a brilliant success (I can honestly say I made the biggest batch of guacamole I have ever made!) The crowd was fun and I think everyone enjoyed themselves. Special thanks go to Mick Corcoran for helping and planning this event and to Tom Day, Neil Bennett, Jonathan Knowles, Clint Wilkes, Joan Bennett, Carrie & Larry Beck, Ron Erickson, and Rick Steidley who helped so much in getting all of our picnic gear there and set up, as well as putting it all away! Thanks to those that helped prep and clean up as well. I so appreciate all your efforts.
This Wednesday, Sept 11, 2013 @ 6:00 pm brings “Meet the Candidate Night”. Come on down to the club and meet the new candidates. Ask the questions and hear what they have in store for the club next year! Of course, Elections will be the following Wednesday Night, so be sure to get your ballot in! If you do not get your ballot in time or you are going to be out of town please contact PC Rick Veach, Chairman of the Nominations and Elections Committee, I am sure he can fix you up!
Enjoy this weather that is coming our way, it may be the last stretch of sunshine for awhile.  And don’t forget BBOD is this weekend. Come out and help support our Sailors….. I hope to see you all there.  Have a wonderful week!

No one correctly identified last week's picture of Rainy Bay, which is on the NE side of Barkley Sound in BC.
This week, we have a less scenic view -- a whole lot of concrete and metal. Two questions -- where is this monstrosity? and what is it? Send your answers to either or both questions to

Jib Sheet Editor this week is Joe Coons.
