SOCIAL NEWS - PAST EVENTS

Wine Tasting a Rousing Success!!

80-90 folks gathered at the Club on Friday night for wine tasting and enjoyed some appetizers as well as being entertained by the high school jazz quartet.  Voting was fierce, but the top White Wine was an Italian wine, Lovo Fior D'Arancio. Second place for white in the voting went to the Duck Pond Pinot Gris.

First place for the Red went to a California Red Wine, the Diora Pinot Noir. There was a tie for second between the Tamarack Merlot and the Yalumba Bush Vines Grenache. Out of the 24 different wines, the first place red was the most expensive at $24.99 a bottle and the first place white was only $15.99 a bottle. The bar will be getting a case of the two winning wines so members can try them the next time they come in.

MEMBERSHIP NEWS
We are a club anchored in friendship and boating… we are also pretty sure your circle of friends includes some non-members, and we don’t want you or them to miss out.  This year is packed with social events and cruises, and we hope to build on your enjoyment of these events by extending an amazing membership offer to friends and family of current members:

  • Invite your friends to join the club between Dec 18, 2015 and Jan 15, 2016
  • If they apply within that window, their initiation and membership dues are only $375 total!
  • This is a savings of $295!
It's the biggest offer of the year, so if you have friends you would like to bring into our community, don't miss out on this deal!

    Notes:
  • Membership applications are available online or at the club
  • Membership is through our regular year and lasts until September.
  • Renewal is at the regular yearly rate without initiation fees.

Happy Holidays everyone!

Friends and Family Promotion

'Tis the season of giving, and we are giving a large discount on initiation and membership to friends or family you encourage to join the club between now and Jan 15 (new member mixer).  Details re on the flier in this jib sheet and plastered around the club, so I'll move on.

Boating Mentors wanted!!!!

Do you remember when you started boating?  ...or when you were considering membership but didn't have a boat?  We are looking for volunteers to act as "mentors".  We assume that you'd be working mainly with a junior member, transitioning from the sailing/racing program... providing an opportunity to learn about boat ownership, potentially go out a few times to learn about larger boats... maybe to Inati, or crabbing or fishing (you don't have to give away your secret spots... unless you want to).  This is meant to add value to junior members, members who aren't as experienced as some of us, and those without a boat (yet).  We're a community, and this is one way to strengthen the bonds to our community, boating and each other... please consider volunteering. We'll let you know how to sign up next week.

Welcome new members!

This week we welcomed in Walter and Lorette Knowles (no relation to our past commodore).  They live in Kirkland but moor their boat Sagres here in Squalicum.  They have just purchased a 46' Moody that they are bringing up as well.  Quite seasoned cruisers, they are looking to join our cruising community and help when possible.

New Member Mixer:  this is scheduled for Jan15, but with how busy this season gets, it's never too early to put it on your calendar.  The mixer is for you whether you're a new member or a seasoned veteran, it's a great way to meet, mingle and strengthen our club...

EDUCATIONAL CORNER

We can't take credit for organizing the recent Tai Chi series at the club, but I do want to thank Kathy and Dirk Vermeeren for graciously volunteering to instruct club members in this ancient martial arts form. Attendees found the classes enjoyable and relaxing as well as informational. Tai Chi, sometimes referred to as "meditation in motion", is widely recognized for its many health benefits. Kathy and Dirk are tentatively planning to repeat the beginners' series in January. So if you missed out the first time, watch for further details.

Beginning in January, Tom Dalgliesh is organizing a series of six US Power Squadron seminars to provide a good grounding in seamanship and boating basics. These will be normal Power Squadron seminars with added local content, and we expect many of the instructors to be BYC members. Each seminar will cover a specific topic, so you can choose one or two or all. Seminars will be held in the Ward Room on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. There will be a charge for these events that all goes to the US Power Squadron which develops and subsidizes these seminars. Stay tuned for a complete list of topics!

And finally check out winter quarter boating courses offered at the Bellingham Technical College by the Bellingham Sail and Power Squadron. In addition to "America's Boating Course" which will help prepare you for the required Washington State Boater Education Card, they are offering "Seamanship" and "Weather". Go to boatingisfun.org for more information.

BAR MANAGER'S CORNER
NEWS FROM THE BAR

Last Friday’s wine tasting event was a huge success, with 24 wines being tasted. Members availed themselves of the opportunity to purchase case lots of some of the wines at bargain prices, also! Don’t be surprised to see at least two or three of the wines from the tasting appear soon (like this week) on the counter at the club!

Here’s the schedule for this Christmas week:

WED: Bar and lounge open at 5. Take a break from last-minute shopping and stop by for a beverage. We’ll probably have some chili on to heat, also.

THUR: Christmas eve. Bar closed

FRI: Christas Day: Bar closed

SAT: Bar and lounge open at 5. Stop in and show off those new Christmasy things!

MON next: Monday Nite Football, the last of the season! Bengals vs. Broncos

See you in the lounge!
Steve

COMMODORE'S COLUMN

What can be said about the last two weeks? I know there was no column last week because the only mentionable event was the Friday Steak night. A pretty well attended event with over 60 steaks cooked by Dick Labadie for those who ordered them.

This week was kind of quiet as well with Monday Night Football, the board meeting, and then finished off with the Friday's at 5:00 Wine Tasting/Christmas Party. I was surprised by the number of folks who came for this event and was very pleased to see so many. A big thanks to Susan Hempler, Susan Henderson, and Gary Baker for setting up this event. I would also like to say that I was honored to present a $24,000 check to our intrepid bar manager Steve Hayward for the Monica Hayward Fund. It is very special that our members are so supportive of one of our own who has given us so much. I want to thank ALL of you who donated and took time out of your schedules to make it happen. We are so blessed as a community and as members. All I can say is, You guys ROCK!!!

As most of you know, the Commodore's Ball photo's are now up on the website do to the great efforts of our Webmaster Terry Tavelli. Thanks so much for helping get them up there. I would also like to mention that there are still a bunch of martini glasses available behind the bar for purchase.

I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and look forward to a wonderful New Year serving you.

-Commodore Mick

PUZZLES AND THINGS...

This Week's Photo Contest

Fort Lauderdale's Fifteenth Street Fisheries (Restaurant) was the topic of last week's photo. Terry Tavelli, Dean Altschuler, Tim Thompson, Jim Gibson, and John Van Haalen all correctly identified the location, while Randy Nulle was close.

This week we see a busy waterfront on a rainy day. If you know the location, send your  answer to drsteveross@gmail.com
