COMMODORE'S COLUMN
Namaskar and Happy New Year!!

2016 has left us in the wake and we have fair seas ahead in 2017.  We have collegial good fun in store and lots of friends to share in it all.  Of course there will be the occasional chore and bottom to scrub but that’s all part of the adventure.
My New Year’s Resolutions are to eat more crab and oysters, smile and wave at power boaters, anchor in Inati and Chuckanut Bay, and tell my wife I love her more every day. I will also check the fuel filter before Garufa leaves the dock the first time this year and wear my own boots when walking on rocks.
The BYC and its members have a great opportunity to shine more brightly than ever in 2017. We are going to need (cheap – yeah, right) sunglasses!
We will have cruises and rendezvous, deliveries and races, sunny days and rain, adverse current and following seas. We may surprise ourselves when learning something new and we may make mistakes from which to surprise ourselves into learning something. We may learn to tie a new knot and we may teach someone who is also learning.  If we are lucky we will not be boarded at Customs in Bedwell Harbor. We will have new members and returning members.
My outside lights are still up at Casa Garufa because I need the seasonal support and inspiration until at least Valentine’s Day. And, speaking of which, the Christmas decorations are down at the club and the Lounge is waiting for the next seasonal inspiration.
So, with all of this goodness in store for us this upcoming year, let’s do our best to ‘share the love’ of the BYC; sponsor a new member, volunteer to host a Friday’s at Five; go out on a race committee boat, clean up the beach at Inati Bay, the list goes on and on.
Cast no Wake Upon our Burgee.

CLUB NEWS
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

And a happy celebration it was for the 25-30 members that came down to the Club on New Year's Eve to ring in the New Year at Midnight (New York time).  Dan and Ariane Ringler brought hats and horns for all; Commodore Neil braved the cold and BBQ'd five dozen oysters that disappeared as fast as they were brought in off the grill; and everyone else brought yummy snacks and nibbles to share.  After we watched the ball drop in New York City, members dispersed either to home or to other parties.  It was a great gathering and I hope to see more members next year!

Dear BYC members:
Advertising your company or business through the Bellingham Yacht Club gains you direct marketing access to enthusiastic boaters and boat owners in Bellingham, Whatcom County and beyond. Over 30 BYC members currently advertise with the BYC and its various forms of community interaction. In addition to supporting the club that hosts club and community events such as Opening Day on Bellingham Bay, Lighted Boat Parade, Junior Ski To Sea, and major local sailboat racing regattas... your advertisement will help the BYC mission, “to foster recreational boating activities in Bellingham and vicinity”. You will also help support BYC community events such as Whatcom Community High School Sailing, Bellingham Sailing Foundation, ‘Sink the Dinghy’ community support fundraising, US Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Local Bellingham Power Squadron and the Sea Scouts.
Advertising with the Bellingham Yacht Club in 2017 includes:
  • A one third page advertisement in the BYC Yearbook and membership roster and on the BYC website. With either of these you can choose to include a brief caption with your member bio or business information.
  •  Listing in the BYC Jib Sheet, mailed weekly to the entire membership with a hyperlink to your company’s website. The Jib Sheet reaches over 375 members, 52 weeks per year, which is over 19,500 emails per year.
  •  Publish up to 4 special offers/events about your business in the BYC Jib Sheet newsletter and up to 4 special offers/events about your business on the BYC Facebook page.
This tremendous advertising program is extended from the 2015 rates of $150 inclusive of all of the above benefits. This is an extraordinary value to both you and the BYC membership.
Please contact Commodore Neil at
commodore@byc.com if you’re interested. Please include business card graphics and a short 1 to 2 sentence member bio. The deadline for this production is January 15, 2017. If you have any questions email me at commodore@byc.com.
Thank you from me and the entire BYC membership for your support of your club.

PUZZLES AND THINGS

This Week's Photo Contest

The small-boat harbor of Zadar, Croatia was the subject of last week's picture. Jim Gibson, Lisa McArdle, Lisa Megard, Teresa Van Haalen, and Phil Dyer all correctly identified the place, Dean Altschuler named a nearby port.

This week we see an aquatic creature that would happily welcome you to his swimming pool. If you know where to find him, send your answer to drsteveross@gmail.com.
