TUES:  7 February: Jam Session; WED:  8 Feb: Panini Night; THURS: 9 Feb: Monica's Mexican; FRI: 3 Feb:  Steak Night

This is a REALLY BIG PICTURE missive. We survived the Superbowl even though the beloved Seahawks did not play. We saw some heroics, some faltering and a few REALLY GREAT commercials.
And, for the FIRST TIME IN CLUB HISTORY, there was a THREE WAY TIE for winner of the chowder and chili cookoff: Dick Labadie with his fabulous halibut and portabella mushroom barley chowder; Steve Hayward’s custom ground beef & steak chili and Commodore Neil with Running Light chili, namesake to the GREEN Hatch and RED Chipotle Adobo CHILIS, muddled with an unwavering variety of spices and topped with an Anchor Light of Sour Cream.  You can ask any of us for recipe details.
We also postponed a REALLY BIG EVENT-The Friday’s at Five Engedi Refuge wrap up. Don’t worry, it’s on the calendar for February 17. Thanks to all the organizers who cooperatively rescheduled.
AND, we have a WEATHER STATION!!! Fleet Captain McInery has installed a wireless weather station on the roof top; the display is on the ledge above the buffet counter.  Now maybe someone will hook us up to Weather Underground and we can be like all the big fancy yacht clubs…and provide up to date weather information to members. (hint hint!)
I am working on finalizing member advertising in the Jib Sheet and on the Website (Thanks Terry and Michele); next up is the Roster!!
This Friday is Steak Night!! I hope Bar Manager Steve has ordered more of that great Commodore’s Blend and that the snow doesn’t slow down the delivery sled.
Cast No Wake Upon Our Burgee,
Commodore Neil
Saturday, Jan 28

37 members and 2 soon-to-be members climbed on board the bus last Saturday and enjoyed a fun, full day of boats, boats, and more boats!  Special thanks to Fleet Captain Scott for making the bus arrangements, and all of the volunteers who chipped in to pack, load, carry, mix, pour and serve!  It was a great display of club cooperation.  Be sure to put this on your calendars for next year!
Steve Guyer of Guyer Boat Works for his donated time and materials to repair the Youth Sailing RIB boat.  You Rock!!

Join Us, February 17,
For A Special Fridays At Five

Due to inclement weather, the February 3rd presenation has been pushed to February 17.  Please join us!
On February 17, your Sink the Dinghy Committee is hosting the Fridays at Five, complete with a dinner of barbequed Salish Poitrine de Boeuf (barbequed marinated beef brisket), along with Pomme do Terre au Four (baked potatoes) and salade Cesar (Caesar Salad).  This dinner is not using any of the Sink the Dinghy funds, it is being provided by the Committee to thank all who have given and to all who will be asked to give to Engedi Refuge, our Whatcom County based recipient fighting the sexual exploitation of women by turning around the lives of those abused by sex traffickers.
Members are welcome to bring appetizers and desserts.
Are you chairing an event or committee and need some help for a particular event?  Send a note to and I'll put a call-out here!

March 25 -- Confidence in Boating
April 1 -- Boating Safety

February 10:  Steak Night
February 17:  Fridays @ 5:
Hosted by Sink the Dinghy
March 3:  Cruising Committee - Cruising Kick-Off

A rather sparse turnout for the Super Bowl party did not stop those attending from having a terrific time! Two chilies and a very excellent fish chowder made up the entries for the Chili and Chowder competition! In the end, the pots were pretty much empty and we’d made short work of a substantial array of appetizers, wings and other game-time goodies. The general consensus was that Chef Dick Labadie was the overall winner and will take home the $25 purse, with Commodore Sweetie and Barman Steve as runner-ups.

This week we turn our attention once again to Steak Nite! Don’t forget to reserve your succulent and mouth-watering filet at the website!

Here’s the skinny for this week:

TUE: Jam Night!  Bar and lounge opens at 5!
WED: Panini grilled sandwiches for $4 each!
THUR: Monica’s Mexican, with the best carne asada north of the border and those tasty bean burritos!
FRI: Steak Nite! Make your reservation at the website. Dinner service starts at 6-ish!

See you in the lounge!

Shakedown Cruise to Anacortes

Exciting times ahead this year for Youth Sailing. Thanks to the incredible generosity of the BYC through donations, bar tips and support of our youth fleet fund raisers, we managed to raise enough funds to purchase 5 RS Teras for our learn-to-sail fleet. This will be the first boat for our 8-15 year old sailors. This boat is state of the art and even more important it is incredibly fun to sail, high boom for safety, self-bailing and easy to right after a capsize. To learn more about this amazing boat, check out

Some great changes coming to our Learn To Sail Program this summer. We will have smaller class sizes (5 kids to one instructor) and an option for half days for the 8-10 year olds. Please help us bring the joy of sailing to our community by spreading the word to your family and friends.

One of our Opti sailors, Sammy Farkas will be attending the Harkin #1 Spring Race at the California Yacht Club at Venice Beach in late February. This race is in preparation for National Team Trials this May in New Jersey. Coming soon we will feature a “sailor of the month” so our entire community can share in the accomplishments of our super sailors.

Thanks for all your support.

Mike Farkas

BYC Sail Fleet Pre-Season Meeting #2
Feb 8
There will be another Pre-Season BYC Sail Fleet Meeting on Wednesday Feb 8, from 6-8p.  We’ll be following-up with information on Wednesday’s racing program as well as taking racer input.  PHRF Fleet Captain Mickey Reams will announce two new long-distance races while Race Committee Chair John Pedlow will have details on the upcoming US Sailing Race Committee 101 Class to be held at the BYC.  The Etchells, 505 and Dinghy Fleets will be on hand to answer questions on how to join their fleets.

ATTENTION ALL BYC SAILBOAT OWNERS:   The Sail Fleet is trying hard to get more Club boats and people out on the water on Wednesdays.  So, we are starting an aggressive crew recruiting campaign to help those interested racing with finding experienced crew    If you’d like to race on Wednesdays in either in Div. A or B, or in the non-flying Cruising Class, but need help getting started, please e-mail me

This Week's Photo Contest

The Dutch Island of Saba, viewed from Sint Maarten, was the subject of last week's photograph. No one correctly identified the location, although Alex Marr named a nearby island.

This week we see an aerial view of a busy harbor. If you recognize the location, send your answer to
