Well, the computer gremlins seem to have invaded my Jibsheet, so my apologies for the wonky margins this week.  I will aim to fix for the next issue.

Big Picture Numero 17

This last weekend was remarkable for several reasons: a) the sun was out b) there was polite discussion on Facebook about civil disobedience and personal responsibility c) it was the weekend before President’s Day weekend. Now, you ask, why would that be so remarkable? Well, because PC Michele and I met on the side of a racing sailboat, Time Bandit from Orcas Island Yacht Club, on the 2005 President’s Day Weekend Winter Shaw race. What is even more remarkable is that this year; thirteen years, cancer survived, blown out shoulder in repair, one cat and one dog lost, two new dogs raised, one horse gained, one house move and miles under the keel of Garufa later up and down Puget Sound... we are celebrating by going to a Horse Show! In Scottsdale! Whooda Thunk? I am one lucky Commodore.

I was contacted by the Commodore of the CYC – Bellingham to invite us to their:
CYC 8th Annual Benefit Dance for the Community Boating Center
  • SAVE THIS DATE: Saturday February 25, 2017
  • BAND: Dance to the Replayzmentz
  • WHERE: Elks Club 7:00 – 11:30pm
  • RSVP: Debra Jones – 360-380-3538

On another front, I represent the BYC in the sailboat racing community by serving as Chief Handicapper for the Pacific Handicap Racing Fleet of the Northwest. Racing season is gearing up with Winter Shaw followed by the Center Sound Series in Puget Sound, so all handicappers are busy. If you are a racer, please register for the 2017 season at PHRF-NW.Org.
The Board of Trustees will be meeting this Thursday, so be prepared for all sorts of news on Friday at the Engedi Refuge Friday’s at Five featuring yours truly at one of the last performances of the BBQ (that hopefully we voted to replace the night before).

A special thank you to those individuals and companies that renewed their advertising.  The Communications Committee is working to give you ample return on your advertising dollar!

Don't see your company listed?  There's an easy fix for that!  Just send Commodore Neil an email (and $150).

Well, we finally got there! We have received approval from the WSLCB to open formerly restricted areas of the club lounge to occupancy by minors! Kudos to the Bar & Lounge Committee, and Scott McEniry in particular, for pursuing this project through to a happy ending! While we work out more detailed guidelines for the use, we ask parents to have their minor children use the tables along the wall in the lounge area, aka the Midshipmen’s Bench.

This is a milestone for the club! Families can now mingle throughout the club without seating restrictions, opening club events to greater participation by family groups. This will also make it far easier to host Youth Sailing events while not having to worry about restrictions on seating. And I’m sure some of the parents will appreciate being able to actually get an adult beverage, since we will now be able to offer full bar service during such events!

Look for more to follow, as the various committees get together to work out specific guidelines for use.

For the Bar & Lounge Committee,

Silent Auction and Salmon Bake
May 13th

Please contribute auction items

2015 Yacht Racing Photo of the Year: Volvo ocean racer Team Brunel rounding the Horn. Framed print available by professional UK sailing photographer Rick Tomlinson

Please join the BYC youth fleet for our 3rd Annual BSF benefit dinner and silent auction. This event is our most important of the year to support our “learn to sail”, junior and high school race team programs.

We are also looking for your help for contributions to the auction. Do you have a business or personal service, artwork or consumable that you can donate to the auction? If so please contact me directly at

The past two auctions have been incredible successes and a fun evening. We have financed the purchase of two 29er dinghy’s, a 10 boat Opti trailer and a used Zodiac RIB from money raised. This has allowed us to improved our fleet and the facilities of our learn to sail program and put as many racing sailors on the water as Seattle.

I hope you can find the time to attend and donate.
With much appreciation

Mike Powell, Youth Fleet Captain

Boat Show Bus Special Thanks
Last week’s Jib Sheet had a great article regarding the success of the Boat Show Bus and I want to make sure the people who made it so successful receive recognition:
Commodore Sweetie for all his help from the beginning all the way through the end.
New member Mike Bianculli for all his work in setting up the flexible charter with BellAire that allowed us to get a bigger bus on the fly so we could accommodate everybody who signed up.
Ann Boren for stepping in to host the event and helping on Boat Show Bus Eve to get everything together.
The Social Committee (Shaun Thompson, Nicole Jordan, Lindsay Kiefer) for their preplanning assistance and help on Boat Show Bus Eve as well as their assistance on the road.
New member Trish (last name?) for her assistance in preplanning and help on Boat Show Bus Eve.
PC Terry Tavelli for taking on bartending duties.
And most importantly, all of you who signed up and contributed your presence to make this year’s bus such a fantastic success!!!
Addendum: Special thanks to Duane Jones for installing the new BYC weather station in the lounge!
-FC Scott McEniry

Join Us, February 17,
For A Special Fridays At Five

On February 17, your Sink the Dinghy Committee is hosting the Fridays at Five, complete with a dinner of barbequed Salish Poitrine de Boeuf (barbequed marinated beef brisket), along with Pomme do Terre au Four (baked potatoes) and salade Cesar (Caesar Salad).  This dinner is not using any of the Sink the Dinghy funds, it is being provided by the Committee to thank all who have given and to all who will be asked to give to Engedi Refuge, our Whatcom County based recipient fighting the sexual exploitation of women by turning around the lives of those abused by sex traffickers.
Members are welcome to bring appetizers and desserts.
Are you chairing an event or committee and need some help for a particular event?  Send a note to and I'll put a call-out here!

March 25 -- Confidence in Boating
April 1 -- Boating Safety

February 17:  Fridays @ 5: Hosted by Sink the Dinghy
March 3:
Fridays @ 5: Cruising Committee - Cruising Kick-Off

We had a full house for Steak Nite this past Friday, with some 60 tender and juicy filets served! It was great to see a room full of happy diners chowing down!

The big news from the bar, of course, is that we’ve received approval from the WSLCB for minors to be able to occupy areas of the main lounge that were formerly off limits! This is a giant step forward, and will smooth the way for more participation in club events by family groups! Hats off to all the folks who worked to make this happen!

Here’s the skinny for this week:

TUE: Bar and lounge open at 5!

WED: Panini-grilled sandwiches and chips for $4!

THUR: Monica’s Mexican, with the best carne asada north of the border and those tasty bean burritos!

FRI: Fri @ 5 hosted by the Sink the Dinghy Committee! Come on down for a tri tip dinner and hear the latest about this year’s fundraising project!

See you in the lounge!

(Left to Right) Sammy Farkas - BYC, Jack Carroll - SYC, and Dieter Creitz, CYC-Seattle

This past weekend 47 sailors raced in the Frigid Digit Regatta hosted by The Corinthian Yacht Club at Shilshole Marina in Ballard. The regatta is part of the Northwest Youth Racing Circuit Winter Series that included Lasers, Optis and RS Aeros. The sailors enjoyed steady winds over the course of 2 days and 10 races. Bellingham was represented in the Opti fleet. The Opti Fleet are the youngest racing sailors. The winners of the Opti fleet were:
1st Place:  Dieter Creitz, Corinthian Yacht Club
2nd Place:  Jack Carroll, Seattle Yacht Club
3rd Place:  Sammy Farkas, Belligham Yacht Club

Winter regattas are a great opportunity to refresh skills and prepare for the busy summer sailing season.  The next regatta in the winter series is the Kitten Cup Regatta, April 22-23 at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club in British Columbia.
Our youth sailing fleet silent auction is just over the horizon and we sincerely hope you'll attend. This is the biggest day of the year for our sailing teams. Standby for more information on this event.
