Big Picturoonie Number 22!

Namaskar! It was certainly great to see so many members, old and new, at the Spring Mixer Saturday night. I haven’t seen PC Michele smile and laugh and dance in such a long time it warmed my heart. And, who knew she could carry four shots of tequila at once? Twice!
I have often said that the BYC should be more active in community events and issues. Trustee Mike Allsop and I have written a letter to Bellingham Mayor, Kelli Linville, to come to the BYC and engage in a discussion with us as members about the proposed Joint Bellingham/Lighthouse Mission Ministries homeless shelter proposed to be located in the 800 block of Roeder Avenue (
click here to read).  I believe that interaction such as this is very important for our members to both learn and express concern, thoughts and/or support. I will keep you informed.
Maya Allsop has suggested that the BYC hold an off-property ‘Dog Party’ somewhere in Bellingham.  I think this is a great idea and am looking for a volunteer to work with Maya to organize this event. I know Mambo, Murphy and Lizzy will be happy to serve as ‘on site hosts’.
It’s just six weeks to Opening Day and Fleet Captain Scott and I are busy making plans.  The official theme is: ‘Attitudes and Latitudes; Adjust one and Reconnoiter the other!’.  I am looking forward to the great boat decoration themes and music for this hopefully (we are due!) sunny, bluebird kind of day event.  More details will be reported as they are confirmed, but rumor is that we will have the Dynamic Duo of Joe Young and Terry Tavelli singing the US and Canadian anthems.
With that,
Cast No Wake Upon our Burgee,
Commodore Neil

Opening Day 2017

Attitudes and Latitudes;
Adjust One, Reconnoiter the Other

Opening Day attire, welcome appetizers and mimosas; Ceremony and Blessing by Bishop Kevin Allen, remarks by local dignitaries; salute to great neighbors, United States of America and Canada; parade review on the Bay; seafood feast and party to Joe Young and Company in the afternoon.

Watch for your invitation and check the often for updates.

Attention Members -- Please remember to leave your nametag in the drawer when you leave.  If anyone has any name tag issues please send an email to Marian Henderson.
Special thanks to Marian for organizing, alphabetizing, and cleaning out defunct name badges.. the drawers look terrific!!

Trustee Duane Jones sits in for a song with Ten Feet Thick at the Spring Party and New Member Mixer
Member Gary Smith nails a riff as a member of the Ten Feet Thick band during the Spring Party and New Member Mixer
Wow -- what a great party!!  Hats off to the Social Committee (and all the volunteers!) that made the Spring Party such a success.  The kabobs were delicious - the band was rocking - and the Club was packed with happy members and guests.

Easter Fridays @ 5
Hosted by the Power Squadron
April 7th

Mark your calendar for another fun Fridays at 5 on 4/7/17 hosted by the Power Squadron! Kay Campbell is going to help us usher in Easter and I hear she's a superb cook. As always, with Fridays at 5, the food is offered at no charge to members, but please bring appetizers and dessert to share if you can! Dinner will be served at 6, with appetizers available as soon as they arrive and the pub opens at 5, with happy hour pricing 'til 6!  Sounds like all we need is an Easter Bunny!

Club Scrub - April 29

It's time to do some Spring Cleaning!  Set aside the morning of April 29 to come down to the clubhouse and lend a hand.  Trustee Duane Jones - head of the Building and House Committee - will have a list of projects (anything from cleaning to painting to light repair work).  So bring your favorite scrub brush, paint brush (you get the idea) and come shine up the Club for Opening Day and summer days ahead!

Wow! What a way to bring in Spring! Saturday’s Spring Party was an outstanding success! So many people contributed to the event I don’t have room here to acknowledge everyone by name, but in particular kudos to the Social Events Committee and Gary Smith’s band for an outstanding performance! Party on!

On a slightly more subdued note, here is the skinny for this week:

TUE: Come on down for jam night! Bring a guitar or just yourself and join in the fun!

WED: Panni-style grilled sandwiches hot and ready!

THUR: Monica’s Mexican, with the best carne asada north of the border and those tasty bean burritos!

FRI: Blue Moon Fri @ 5! Bring those appy’s and snacks and hang out with friends at the club!

See you in the lounge!

Spring is officially here and Bellingham Youth Sailing is ramping up for a great year. So many new and positive things to add to an already great program. From hiring a new sailing director to the purchase of new boats, this is already proving to be a great year and all thanks to the generous support of our club and community.

Ironically, the first race of the Spring is actually the last race of the Northwest Youth Racing Circuit (NWYRC) to be held at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club at Kitsilano in Vancouver. For more information or to register, please visit:

There is so much excitement for the coming season and from all of us working with Bellingham Youth Sailing and we hope you'll join us at one or more events this season.

2017 BSF Youth Fleet
Silent Auction and Salmon Bake
May 13th

Please join the BYC youth fleet for our 3rd Annual BSF benefit dinner and silent auction. This event is our most important of the year to support our “learn to sail”, junior and high school race team programs.

The past two auctions have been incredible successes and a fun evening. We have financed the purchase of two 29er dinghy’s, a 10 boat Opti trailer and a used Zodiac RIB from money raised. This has allowed us to improved our fleet and the facilities of our learn to sail program and put as many racing sailors on the water as Seattle.

I hope you can find the time to attend and donate.
With much appreciation

Mike Powell, Youth Fleet Captain

Around Eliza Race Last Weekend
The BYC kicked off the 2017 Sailing Season this past Saturday, March 25 with the Around Eliza Race. The fleet consisted of: Key, Keet, Natural Mystic, Rubicon, Strider, Harlequin, Dreamtime, and Blackfoot. There were 12 – 15 knots of breeze from the South, which made for a quick race. Competitors could leave Eliza to Port or Starboard, however, all the boats elected to leave Eliza to Port. The next race will be the Around Vendovi Race on April 15.

This Week's Photo Contest

The town and harbor of Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, U.S.V.I., was the subject of last week's photograph. John Van Haalen correctly identified the location.

This week we see an imposing tower that overlooks a waterway. If you know the location, send your answer to

Don't see your company listed?  There's an easy fix for that!  Just send Commodore Neil an email (and $150).
