MEMBER NEWS
Are you pondering what the BYC’s Open Day theme is going to be?
Well, continue reading…

Our theme this year, initiated at the 90th Annual Commodore's Ball, was celebrating maritime naval history - the days of maritime adventure, warfare, exploration and trade.  To commemorate the Commodore's theme and to welcome the newly remodeled Ward Room, a model of the famous Cutty Sark is on display in the downstairs entrance hallway.  Stop by and take a look at the craftsmanship and detail of this famous vessel the next time you are on your way downstairs.  Cutty Sark is on loan to the BYC from Trustee Jim Gibson.

FREE VESSEL SAFETY CHECK !  Is your boat in compliance with the U.S. Coast Guard?  Bellingham Sail & Power Squadron offers a free Coast Guard approved vessel safety check.  Send request/inquires to Merle @ VSC@boatingisfun.org

This Bellingham Herald article from 1961 talks about the BYC "Shipwreck" Party (Precursor to Opening Day).  This newspaper clipping was given to me  Gloria Walker, BYC Life Member since 1959.  If you have any old photos or historical news articles from the BYC, please let me know and we'll scan them in and make them part of Bellingham Yacht Club Historical Archives. --Commodore Jon
Pink Boat Regatta is looking for a few great volunteers to help organize and run the 2015 regatta in September.  This is a great way to assist in a great cause with really fun people.  Contact Neil Bennett or Jim Gibson.
EDUCATION CORNER

Last Wed BYC member Ward Naviaux and his pal, Andy Schwenk entertained 35 members and guests with tales of their "Awesome Adventure" double-handing Ward's SC-27 from San Francisco to Hawaii in last summer's Pacific Cup. Their presentation was both informative and entertaining for racers and non-racers alike. It was great to see so many people at the club whether they came for the information, Andy's jokes, or the corn dogs! In any case, a big thank you to Ward and Andy for sharing their adventure with us.

Next up on Wednesday March 18 at 7pm, "come in out of the fog" and join us for Captain David Yell's Radar Seminar. He will discuss tuning your radar as well as using radar for navigation and collision avoidance, information of importance to all boaters. The event is free to BYC members and guests, but we request that you preregister (email Tom Dalgliesh at waverleytom@gmail.com).

Looking ahead, mark your calendars for a Battery Maintenance presentation on April 1 by our own Scott McEniry and then a Boating Emergencies discussion on April 15 led by our friend, Bob Jacobson. Hope to see you there!

Flotilla Heading North in June

We are continuing our planning for a group flotilla in June to take advantage of the long summer days. We are working to firm up our itinerary with 4 boats planning to participate. Right now we expect to leave Bellingham on June 10, we hope to get as far north as Octopus Island, we will travel at sailboat speeds, and we expect to return by about July 4. If you would like to join us, if you plan to be up that way and would like to "stop by" for a day or two, or if you just want to check out our itinerary, you can contact Dean Altschuler (altschulercpa@aol.com) or Marian Welsh (mimawelsh@gmail.com) for more information.

COMMODORE'S COLUMN
Sorry I missed my column last week…    to be honest, I just spaced it out.   I was up in Vancouver looking at a new sailboat.  Last Month, after 7 years of an amazing boat partnership with two great friends, sailors, BYC Members Mike Poulos & Jon Seestrom, I parted ways so that I and my wife Ann can get a boat to call our own.  Also, while up in Vancouver, I caught up with an old school friend I hadn’t seen in over 10 years. Sunday, I did a 5 mile hike up to Twin Lakes with another friend and my dog, Cooper.  Then finally, on Monday a team of consultants showed up at my work to perform a Cyber  Security Risk Assessment...wheh!!  It wasn’t until Tuesday afternoon that I realize I didn’t send anything in to Jib Sheet editor Michele Bennett.
I hope that everyone read above about this year’s Open Day Theme, “Animal House”.   This classic movie starring John Bulushi came out when I was in high school and fosters great memories of my youth. So you’ll need to bear with me as I go through a mid-life crisis moment!  I’d like to see every BYC member with a boat working on a design and plan to be at the Opening Day Guest Dock Raft Up.  Please remember to bring along those members and guests who are in a temporary state of “Boatlessness”.  There will be great food & beverages, and if we can swing it… some Live Music playing tunes from “Otis Day and the Nights” (“Twist & Shout”, “Louie Louie”).  Let’s make this years’ Opening Day Legendary!!!
Thanks Vicky Olsen and Angie Santosousso for hosting last Fri@5 and the great presentation on the upcoming BYC Cruising season.  It’s going to be a great boating year.  (A side note, if you’re interested in sponsoring a Friday’s @ Five, the club will reimburse $150 for food costs.   AND... You’ll get the microphone to announce your event, committee or whatever. )
A quick shout out to thank Ward Naviaux and Andy Schwenk for putting on a great presentation at last Wednesday’s BYC Boating Education Series - “Racing the Double Handed PAC CUP”   Check the Jib Sheet for more upcoming events.
BYC’s Wednesday Club Racing Series starts up on April 8th.   This year, the BYC Sailing Fleet is putting a huge emphasis on making the racing relaxing and fun. We are setting up special cruising and non-spinnaker divisions and encouraging boaters to get out on the water for an evening sail on Bellingham Bay.   I’m working with Bar Manager Steve and Monica on Hawaiian themed night with pig roasts at the end of each series.    The BYC Race Packet is only $50 for all races including the weekend long distance races and you can sign up at sailfleet.byc.org.    For more information can contact me or BYC Sail Fleet Captain, Bart Maupin nine30nine@gmail.com.
Finally, don’t forget Friday Steak Night is this week…. Sign up byc.org ahead to reserve your steak.   Unfortunately, I cannot attend since I’ll be heading to Idaho’s Schweitzer Ski Resort with my son Jack for the U14 PNW Buddy Werner Ski Race Championships.
 Cheers!  Commodore Jonathan
This Week's Photo Contest

Last week's photograph was of the Château d'Amboise, on the Loire River in France. Terry Tavelli, Mark Harding, John Van Haalen, Jim Gibson, and David New all correctly identified the location.

This week we are not in France (nor in Kansas) anymore. If you know the location, send your answer to drsteveross@gmail.com.

Jib Sheet Editor this week is PC Michele Bennett.
