WED:  27 April: Bar and lounge open at 5 - Burger Night; THURS: 28 April: Bar and lounge open at 5;  FRI: 29 April: Fridays @ 5 - Bring your appetizers!;  SAT: 30 April: Bar and lounge open at 5

It's time for the annual spring cleaning of the clubhouse!!  Time to wash away the winter grey and shine things up for Opening Day and summertime days on the deck.  Building and House Chair, Duane Jones, will be the man in charge -- but he's going to need your help!  Come on down around 8 am on Saturday to lend a hand.  Have a pick-up truck?  Bring it!  Handy with a hammer?  Bring it!  Love donning your sailing boots and going crazy with a pressure washer?  Bring 'em!

Hawaiian Night was a great success.  We had 45 RSVPs and ended up with over 75+. This made it a challenge to anticipate the food and we did run out. We will make some changes to future catered events to only sell as many plates as people we have been able to account for. On an up note I heard that the food was excellent and the entertainment by the Bellingham Ukulele Group along with the Hawaiian Dancers-Northwest Hawaii Ohana were amazing and provided a wonderful show.  Special thank you to Thomas Childs for his famous and yummy Pineapple Upside-Down cake for dessert. Also a big thank you to Heather Graham, Dayle Nevitt, and Judy and Emma Powell for helping to decorate and to everyone who helped to clean up. The night's clean up went so nicely and sharing the job made all the difference. I also want to thank Dan Wooldridge, Murray Hill, and Steve Hayward for staying on their toes at the bar with the big group and thank you Dan for putting together those yummy drink specials.

Oh Behave! SV Garufa invites the fleet of the BYC to join her on the Opening Day parade of May 7, 2016. Decorate your craft in her best 'Goldfinger' theme, indulge your crew in similar fashion and meet the fleet shortly after the Ceremonies at the clubhouse off the Fairhaven Ferry Terminal to promenade Boulevard Park.
We still desperately need people to cook for Fridays @ 5. There is money available for reimbursement and cooking does not need to be complicated.  It can be BBQ Chicken, Chili or even a Soup and Salad. Anything is welcome and much appreciated. Dates that we need volunteers to provide at least a main course are:  June: 6/3, 6/17, July: 7/1, 7/15 and 7/29.
Stay tuned to the
Upcoming Events Calendar for all of the great social events being planned!

Anacortes Shakedown Cruise Report

This past weekend, 9 BYC boats (and 2 RV's) traveled to Anacortes to join 11 Bellingham and Friday Harbor Power Squadron boats for our Shakedown Cruise. It was a wonderful, mostly rain-free weekend with great food and friends. Friday night we had a Docktail Party with plenty of yummy appetizers at the end of C dock.  It was a great time to catch up with friends and make some new ones.  Then Saturday night, 60 of us walked into town for dinner at the Majestic.  Thanks to everyone who attended for making our first cruise this season a big success!

Host Needed

A host is needed for the Adventure Cruise to Prevost Harbor August 5-7.  Also, is anyone interested in hosting a long distance cruise?  The Adventure Cruise would be a perfect launching point for a cruise to points north.  If you are interested, email Vickie Olson at

Youth Fleet Silent Auction
BYC Sail Fleet News
It’s been awhile since my last Sail Fleet Post.  I’ve been out of town at ski races with my son Jack followed by  a week of Spring Skiing at Lake Tahoe.  It’s now time to shift gears from skiing into full Sailing mode!!
On March 30, the BYC Sail Fleet Kick-Off Party had a great turnout of racers who enjoyed free burgers and cheap pints courtesy of the BYC Sail Fleet.   John Pedlow and Randy Nulle stepped in for me and provided an exciting overview of this year’s season.
So far, there is a lot of excitement with the BYC Racing Program this year and registrations are way up.  So far, we have 24 boats registered and more joining in over the next month.  There are 16 PHRF Boats and 8 Etchells registered with the Youth Sailors coming out after High School Sailing ends in Mid-May.    Last Wednesday had a good showing of 9 boats, which seemed bigger since the bar was packed.
We can still use some more Race Committee Volunteers.  If you or someone you know would like to help out, please send me an e-mail to

Please check your schedule and call me to sign up to help.  It is essential, and much appreciated.

Thank you.

The weekend of August 27, 2016 will feature JOINT Pink Boat AND Leukemia Cup regattas on the Bay on the same DAY, at the same TIME.

One course, two regattas? Why? So we can have more fun and raise more money to help develop a cure for two of the most pervasive cancers...we want to kick BOTH their ASSES at the same time!

After the Regatta, a BBQ at the BYC Clubhouse, with raffles, auctions and the ATLANTICS.

Stay tuned... there will be a Kickoff Fridays at Five on July 15, 2016.

Brought to you by RC Jim Gibson and VC Neil Bennett

PROJECT BOAT: This 1965 34 ft. Fairliner is looking for a new home... free to the right person! Only one of her two engines works, and interior she has leaks (hull sound), but is beautiful classic and especially nice as a live aboard.  You can see her at Colony Wharf on C Street. e-mail

Saturday the 16th was the Inati Bay Clean-Up conducted by the Dead Pirates.
Good work and a fine lunch. Yes, there was some rum consumed but everyone behaved themselves.
That evening was the Hawaiian Night Dinner. Thanks to the untiring efforts of Susan Hempler and Susan Henderson to put it all together. It was a great night and the ukulele band and dancers were a lot of fun. Wednesday the 20th was the 3rd of the Numb Bum series of sail boat racing.  For the Etchell's fleet 3rd place went to Extravaganza, 2nd to Shameless, and 1st to Attitude. For the PHRF fleet, 3rd went to Cougar Hunter, 2nd to Blackfoot, and 1st went to Honker.
The Board Meeting was on Thursday and here are a few highlights: The finances look good and we have made arrangements for a sublease for our kitchen to a catering business called Delicious Mischief. This sublease will help cover the loss we encountered with our latest lease negotiation with Windows On The Bay. We discussed the upcoming Opening Day planning and this Friday's Friday @ 5:00. We will soon be kicking off another Membership Drive with details to come in the next Jib Sheet. There was also some discussion of maybe purchasing an AED unit for the building. Cost and feasibility will be worked out by next month. I also reminded everyone that this Saturday the 30th is the Club Scrub.
Lastly, this Saturday was the Hales Pass Dash. This race starts in Bellingham Bay, runs up Hale's Pass to Point Migley and back. About eight boats participated in a light air start with an increasing wind as the day went on. I personally saw the breeze up to 20 knots. The wind went light at Point Migley but then filled in again as everyone started heading back. We were short handed on Blackfoot so our crew work wasn't as efficient as normal. Suffice it to say we all had a great time and we didn't get rained on.
Results will be posted by end of week.
Don't forget CLUB SCRUB is this Saturday!!! Please volunteer.

This Week's Photo Contest

Last month's photo was taken near Basseterre, St. Christopher Island (better known as St. Kitts). John Van Haalen correctly identified the location, John Raasch named another location on the same island.

This week we see a bright night scene on a busy river. If you know the location, send your answer to
