NOW, A TANGIBLE MEMORIAL TO DICK JOHNSON:
Dick and I were long-time buddies, but I was away on vacation when he died, we had seen him the day before we left. Judy
and I were stunned that he succumbed to the stresses of the surgery.
One day older than me, Dick and I shared our BYC love and that of Rotary, too. Dick not only nearly singlehandedly ran the bar for us for years, he served the Club as Commodore and then during a very stressful lawsuit filed by an opportunistic ex-Member in the early 90's, one that could have ruined us had it not been for his effective and discreet liaison with insurance companies and attorneys. He learned to be effective and discreet, he told me, when he was a top secret code-breaker in the Army in Washington during the Korean War...his full obituary is here.
Judy and I have decided that, because we knew him mainly through the Club, we will make a substantial gift in his memory to the Ward Room funding projec
t. I am absolutely sure he would be pleased!
With Commodore Michele's OK, we will be putting two tasteful plaques in the room: One will indicate the names of folks who have given in memory of Dick, and another for undesignated gifts to the room itself, and I'll be contacting all previous donors to confirm which they wish to be on. If you wish to give, (and I sure hope you will)
, here is a link to connect you to our BYC.ORG website where you can easily make a donation. THANK YOU! --- Joe Coons

SUMMER IS BOATING TIME
and many of our members are taking the opportunity to cruise to the wonderful Salish Sea destinations and even more distant places. Reciprocity with other clubs is a good way to find moorage and save expense. Yacht clubs with which we have established reciprocal agreement are listed on the BYC website, and a few yacht clubs will take reservations but most are on a space-available upon arrival basis. Outstations are generally not included. Since each yacht club has its own specific protocol on reciprocals, please be sure to check out the website of the yacht clubs you will be visiting before leaving Bellingham to ensure that you are aware of their reciprocal facilities and policies. Happy boating! --- Alex Marr, Reciprocity Coordinator
What’s with all the posters all over the Club? It’s a fund raiser for Breast Cancer Research. And, it takes advertising to create awareness to create fund raising enthusiasm. This is comparable to our Sink the Dinghy
campaign the Club so successfully runs every Christmas season.
This year the regatta will be on the opening day of PacRim, so our guests and competitors will have great exposure to the Bellinghamsters’ antics in fund-raising fun. And the PBR will run simultaneously with the Seattle regatta; there are PBR’s all across the country (go to the Pink Boat Facebook page and read all about Team Terrrapin’s efforts to complete the Newport to Bermuda race dressed all and only in Pink https://www.facebook.com/TeamTerrapin
We need your help to raise money. There are several ways you can do this: register to race your boat and raise money; donate money directly as a sponsor (Squalicum Marine and SPIE [PC Michele’s employer] have already stepped up); sponsor Garufa
by pledging money on the PBR website; tell your friends and family. 100% of the funds raised go directly through the PBR website. ---

BE A HOST FAMILY FOR PAC RIM REGATTA PARTICIPANTS! Would You Like To Host A Couple For The Pacific Rim Regatta at Bellingham Yacht Club In September 2014!?
One of the most rewarding experiences is to host a couple from another country. This September 6th-13th is a truly unique opportunity for the members of the BYC to host the racers and Ambassadors coming to the Club for the Regatta.
Being a host requires little more than opening your home to house our participants, ensure they arrive at the BYC each morning and picking them up in the evening. Our schedule is posted on the BYC Website (Pacrim.BYC.Org). To apply, you simply need to go click on the link on the main page or you can access it here.
As a host, you are invited to participate in the morning and evening activities, and may attend at a modest cost, the opening and closing ceremonies as well as special events planned for the Ambassadors throughout the week.
If you would like to participate, sign up at the BYC Website, and if you have questions, contact Teresa Van Haalen (email@example.com), coordinator for the hosting for this important community event.
BE 'IN THE KNOW'! Would You Like To Follow What Is Happening For The PacRim Regatta This September? You can follow what is planned for PacRim 2014 by going to PacRim2014.Com and subscribing to our official site by clicking on the Follow button in the upper right corner. This is a great way to keep up to date on what is planned and on new posts.

OUR COMMODORE'S COLUMN:
Not much news from the bridge deck. The weather is great, the club is open for your use, get out there and enjoy the summer. This weekend is the 4th of July cruise to Garrison Bay. For those in town, enjoy the 4th from the clubhouse deck.
Dick Johnson's celebration of life is July 14th, Noon to 5:00, at the club. And, sadly, Katrina is still looking for a home. As it turned out, the woman had an allergic reaction to Katrina. So if there are any leads, please let me know. I'll keep you posted.

STEVE ROSS'S PHOTO CONTEST:
The bas relief statue of Nike, in Ephesus, Turkey, was the subject of last week's photograph
. John Van Haalen, John Raasch, Meredith Ross, and Mark Harding all correctly identified the subject. According to our tour guide (a profession that is the source of much knowledge!), this statue served as the inspiration for the Nike Swoosh.
This week we're at a place where nothing moves particularly fast, but the leisurely pace suits many. If you know the location, send your answer to firstname.lastname@example.org.
