BOAT SHOW BUS UPDATE:

According to Vice Commodore and Chairperson Jody Erickson, there are less than 20 seats left on the Boat Show Bus on January 28th!  She says that the Club intends to open our registration to other Friends and Boating organizations on Monday Jan 16th...So if you want to go on the Seattle Boat Show Bus....get signed up so you don't miss this fun, traditional event!  Sign up in the lounge or call her… 

If you've not joined the bus crowd before, here's what you get:  Tickets for both the in-the-water and Safeco Center shows; free transportation; lots of breakfast snacxks and pre-dinner snacks, too; liquid refreshments both ways; and no parking or driving (or traffic) hassle.  You can sign up at the Bar and be sure of a seat.  Here's the Blurb.


YOUTH SAILING PROGRAM MOVES FORWARD,
HAS NEW LEADERSHIP!


You might not be aware of it, but we are well into the planning phases for next summer’s junior sailing instruction program.  It will be a challenging and exciting year as we try to refine and further build up the program that Steve Kersey and others revived over the past several years. 

Making a big commitment to the success of the program, Arne Ahlen has volunteered to be the program chair for this coming 2012 youth sailing season. He says that "A major change is that we are planning to hire a paid Director/Instructor to be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the 10-week program. To put this program on a sustainable, long-term basis we are seeking the full support of the membership in publicizing the program and directing potential candidates to the program."  

Here are some of the specific volunteers we need:

--- Junior Sailing Fleet Co-Captain to assist and back-up the Captain’s role. 

--- Maintenance volunteers to work on our dinghy fleet of 6 Optis, 6 Lasers, and 7 FJs before the instruction program starts.  (Craig Henderson has offered to continue working on the required repairs but it would be great to find additional volunteers to assist in the repair and organization of the boats and rigging.) 

--- Other activities requiring volunteer help include publicity, student registration, and assisting the instructors during the 10-week program with transportation to and from the clubhouse to the dingy dock and help with additional activities when wind and weather are not cooperating.

--- The Junior Sailing Fleet Committee’s function is to provide the general outline and direction of the program.  It will provide coordination with other programs and feedback to improve the program.  We are seeking both members of BYC and outside personnel to support this role.

OUR FLEET CAPTAIN REPORTS:

My apologies for not announcing this earlier, but last November Arne Ahlen, 1st year BYC Trustee and member of the Youth Sailing Planning Committee, had accepted the position as BYC Junior Sailing Fleet Captain.  [You can see the remarkable efforts Arne is making detailed above.]  This position had previously been held by Steve Kersey who served five years as Junior Fleet Captain and program coordinator of BYC’s Learn to Sail Program.    Steve’s accomplishments included resurrecting the junior program from a just a few kids to over 120 in last summer’s program, formation of the Whatcom Community High School Sailing Team and the purchase of a new FJ Fleet.   Thank you, Steve for such a great effort on behalf of our Club!
 
Racing Federation Formed
Last week members of Bellingham Yacht Club, Anacortes Yacht Club, Oak Harbor and Corinthian Yacht Club met up over lunch and beer last week at the Brown Lantern to lay out the foundation of the Oak Harbor-Bellingham-Anacortes Racing Federation.  The mission is to promote, coordinate and unify Sailboat Racing in our North Puget Sound region. The goal is to draw more sailors & racers into each club’s respective local venue, such as P.I.T.C.H.    Also, they want to organize cross-club events such as last year’s ABC Challenge Race.  (The ABC Challenge is a race with multiple start location at home waters and a combined finish at Blakely Island.   Race is followed by a BBQ and overnight stay at Blakely Island Marina.)
 
Bart Maupin takes over as BYC Sailing Fleet Captain
Due to time constraints caused by family matters, Ray Poorman has stepped down as BYC Sailing Fleet Captain.  Ray will still be involved with the Sailing Fleet in an advisory capacity.  Ray’s replacement will be Bart Maupin.  Bart, who skippers the Santa Cruz 27 Ol Yeller and is on the prowl for an Olsen 911, has actively raced in Bellingham Bay and the Puget Sound Region for the past six years.   Bart races with BYC, CYC and AYC will be a great leader for the fleet. Last Year’s Sailing Fleet Captain, Randy Nulle, will also stay on in an advisory role as Co-Captain.
 
Mike Poulos accepts new BYC Dinghy Fleet Captain Position
Although Mike Poulos has been single handedly been organizing, coordinating  and promoting the Bellingham Yacht Clubs Dinghy Sailing, he now has the official title of being the first BYC Dinghy Fleet Captain.   The BYC Dinghy Fleet has a very critical purpose in the club that differs from the keel boat fleets by providing a competitive, fast and exciting racing format on Bellingham Bay.  Dinghy Racing allows a more affordable entry into sailboat racing and is a catalyst for drawing new members into our club.  Over the years, Mike has built up Laser fleet to record 15 boats registered last year.   Also, Mike added FJ racing to Tuesday night and this year’s goal is to start up a new 505 Class Fleet.   Adding to the list of Mike’s accomplishments is the overwhelming success of the Dale Jepson One-Design Regatta (formerly called the Bellingham Bay One Design).  At last Septembers DJOD, over 60 Dinghies from Washington and British Columbia showed up for exciting high-wind racing in Bellingham Bay.  In prior years, DJOD has been the venue for the District 6 Laser Fleet Championships.   Dale Jepsen One Design, along with PITCH, are the “signature” regattas that reinforce Bellingham Yacht Club’s identity as prominent yacht club in the Pacific Northwest region.  Thanks, Mike, for all your efforts.

Bar & Lounge Report: Changing of the Guard
Well, after running the bar for over a year, my time is over.  Commodore Troy Curran has appointed 1st Year Trustee Joe Young to replace me as the new BYC Bar Manager.  Joe, who performs live music profesionally, has a lot of exposure around bars & clubs and will be great at the job.   I will be transferring my bar responsibilities to Joe over the next month.  
 
Along with Joe Young as the new Bar Manager, Kathy Brown will be taking over Wine purchasing from Don Jorgenson and Trudy Kelsoe will be managing Bartender Scheduling and Room Reservations.   Please offer this new Bar Committee your appreciation and for making the club a fun, festive and vibrant.
 
I would like to personally thank all the volunteer bartenders and everyone who has helped me out this past year with the bar.  Although it was a lot of work, I really enjoyed it!   From much positive feedback I received, I sensed that most were pleased with how the bar was running and that the BYC Clubhouse had restored some its original character since after remodel shock. 
 
Unfortunately, I missed my revised budget by about $2,000 after lowering prices.  However, the bar ended up with an $11,500 net gain which was the largest gain seen in several years.  Furthermore, last year the Junior Sailing Fund Tip Jar collected over $2,500.   Much of this financial success was attributed to better inventory control, the Commodores Ball, and very successful regattas (PITCH and DJ One-Design).  PITCH alone pulled in amazing $6000 in gross sales over the Labor Day weekend.   By comparison, a busy Friday@Five would have $500 in sales.  It’s projected this year, that with more efficient utilization of bartenders, the bar should see a net profit between $15,000 and $18,000.  All of these funds go towards offsetting the costs of maintaining our clubhouse, offering more programs and making our club affordable.  
 
All this would not be possible if not for the Volunteer Bartenders and the hard-working Bar and Lounge Committee.    To best show your appreciation for these volunteer members, please make it a point to come down to the clubhouse more frequently and especially, give them a big “Thank You”.
 
Please note that our Winter Bar Hours (Until April) are:  THU, FRI & SAT: 5 p.m. to Closing.

NEW SUMMER RACING PROGRAM...

A new BYC Race Program will be starting up in 2012 on every other Friday Night during the summer months (5 races).  The Bellingham Yacht Club Summer Solstice Series Race is interned to put Fun back into Sailboat Racing. It will be a non-competitive venue with opportunities to learn more about sailboat racing and enjoy a nice summer evenings on Bellingham Bay with friends, family, members and guests.  There will be awards for finish place, but also creativity, boating spirit, customs, singles division, etc. 
 
We are looking for spirited, creative and fun members to help plan this on and off the water events. Committee Members will define the overall event structure, determine the theme of each race, define awards categories, and help coordinate on the water and shore side social activities.
