COMMODORE'S COLUMN
Big Picture #3

As I write, I am flying home from Pittsburgh, PA. While a nice enough city with some friendly folks, it’s just not the Pacific NW (and neither is their version of a seasonal cold) and we are both eager to get home.
The Volunteer ‘effort of the week’ goes to the venerable Lavine’s…partly to Linda, who is always there, ready and willing to help -- whether its potatoes, steaks or knives, she is on top of it; and partly to Mr. ‘Friendly Confines’ Jack, who finally helped his NL baseball team into the World Series. I am sure he will have a ‘Cubbies’ flag for the pole when we watch the last, winning game.
On Monday night, Susan West pulled one ‘out of the hat’ and arranged for a BYC educational event that set the bar very high by coordinating and negotiating a presentation by Laura Dekker, a solo young woman Around the World sailor, held at the Window’s on the Bay, as a benefit for BYC Youth Sailing. Hats off to you, Susan.
The Membership Committee has submitted three new membership applications that are currently in the midst of the electronic voting process, so we can welcome them into the Club as soon as possible. We will let you know as soon as possible so that you all can welcome them to the BYC family.
Next Saturday is the ‘Club Scrub’, and I hope everyone has their hammers and brooms ready. This is one of those BYC club traditions that just never quits. Come on down to watch me do my best ‘one armed paper hanger’ impersonation, and don’t forget….pizza and beer when we are all done.

COMMITTEE NEWS

This story ran in last week's edition, but it's important enough to run it again... the BYC is here today because of its volunteers and so it's important that all of us step up to pitch in when we're able.  (And PC Tavelli's web program makes it easier than ever!)  -Editor

Trustee Shaun Thompson is this year's Membership Committee Chair and if anyone would like to volunteer to help --  has an issue with membership such as access to the club, cards not working, etc. -- they can contact Shaun at
bycmemberchair@gmail.com.

Shaun is also the liaison for the Programs Committee and if you would like to volunteer to help, please email him at
shaun.thompson.byc@gmail.com. (Shaun is looking for up to 3 co-chairs to assist this year)

Last, but not least, a big BYC thank you to Susan Henderson for volunteering to take on the duties of Membership Secretary.

CLUB NEWS

BYC Showcased a SPOOKtacular Friday @ 5 Halloween Party!

Just look who showed up!  Club members, families, and friends of all ages came together for freaky fun and memorable GHOULISH food!  The adult/kid costume contests were remarkable and this year's PRIZES were amazing.
Thank you Susan Hempler and her team for planning and executing this year's fun loving Halloween Party!

Make your plans now to join your BYC Bridge and Trustees for one of the most long-standing of BYC traditions... the annual Tom and Jerry Party.  Designed as a way to kick-off the holiday season, the Tom and Jerry Party is always held the Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving.  Commodore Neil and I will be serving up the complimentary 'Tom and Jerry' drinks (bet you can't stop at just one!) and we look forward to seeing you there!

BAR MANAGER'S CORNER
NEWS FROM THE BAR

Last Friday’s Halloween Party was well attended and I’m happy to report that everyone had a ghoulish good time! This week seems kind of anti-climactic, somehow, but every time is a good time to “come on down” and hang with friends at the club!

Here’s the skinny for this week:

TUE: Bar and lounge open at 5!

WED: Burgers and brats hot off the grill, starting at 5!

THUR: Monica’s Mexican, with the best carne asada north of the border and those tasty bean burritos!

FRI: Bar and lounge opens at 5! End your week and celebrate Friday!

MON next: Monday Nite Football continues with the Vikings vs the Bears!

See you in the lounge!

Steve

SAIL FLEET NEWS
Jack Island Race Recap

BYC Jack Island race started out in the morning with light Easterly winds as forecasted that setup for a downwind start.  BYC RC PRO Dyane Rogge had volunteered to start the race to the appreciation of all racers who were glad not to rabbit start.   The course was modified this year: rounding Bellingham Channel Buoy “4” located .5NM SE of Jack Island instead of the island itself and the persistent wind shadow that surrounds it.  Half way to Jack and at the rounding, wind was steady 5-7 knots with a strong current from the north.  On return from the mark East of Jack, wind was mostly 10-12 knots, which was a pleasant surprise and stronger than forecasted. Best of all…  No rain!   The results are still being tabulated and will be posted on the BYC Web Site soon.
To get a full sense of the race, check out this video clip from Peter Hallett on board Flying Circus.
