OPENING DAY Q&A:
QUESTION: What includes a Fly By, Costumes, Blessing of the Fleet, Dress Blues, Dancing to Live Music, Boat Parade, Anthems and Flag Raising, Pirates, Champagne Reception, Pinatas, Awards and Honorable Mentions, Mexican Buffet, Dignitaries, and Margaritas?
ANSWER: It’s BYC's All Day Celebration of the Opening Day of Boating Season, Saturday, May 5th! The theme is Cinco de Mayo…
This year's Kick-off Party is a very special event for BYC Members and their invited registered guests---only! You must bring your BYC membership card to be admitted and wear your name tag at all times while at this event. Your guests must register as your personal guests. For great service, the BYC will have paid bartenders for this annual season-kick-off event! Visit www.byc.org for more detailed information.
No puedo esperar, Amigos! (That Means "Can't Wait, Friends!")
There’s a private Champagne Reception at 10:30 AM for BYC Members & their Families and Invited Guests only.
There’s the Traditional Opening Day Ceremony at noon with anthems, raising of the flags, Commodore Troy's address, and the Blessing of the Fleet by Bishop Kevin Allen. (The public is welcome to attend this noon event.)
“Boats Away” will be announced at 1 PM for the Opening Day Decorated Boat Parade. The parade is open to all boats. The parading boats will rendezvous at Bellingham Ferry Terminal at 1:45 pm, with the Boat Parade to be led by Vice Commodore Jody King Erickson on Hopscotch, a Beneteau 50' Sailboat. The Zodiac schooner will be the Review Boat
Then, the Opening Day Cinco de Mayo Fiesta Kick-off Party begins at 4:30 at the BYC. Theree will be Live Music by the "Atlantics" from 5 until 8ish, with a Mexican Buffet & Margarita Specials.

The Jib Sheet had it wrong
: Wednesday Nights during Sailing Season, the Bruger & Brew Special is served from 6:00 to 9:00, and all BYC members and Sailing crew are welcome! The price is $6.00…Jib Sheet editor Joe Coons
is hanging his head in shame! “Oh well”, he says. “This ain’t the New York Times!”
LACONNER CRUISE IS MAY 11, 12 & 13
By Sea or by Land…please plan to join us on a Wine Tasting Excursion & Cruise to La Conner May 11, 12 & 13
(come any or all days!) There will be Friday night martinis and appetizers on the dock, and then Saturday will be full of activities and shopping.
Then another wine tasting at “Washington Sips” on 1st
Street from 4 to 6 pm on Saturday afternoon. Saturday dinner will be at a location chosen at the Friday night gathering.
Sunday: Mimosas and then breakfast at the favorite Calico Cupboard or on your boat.
We have 200 feet of dock space on either side of the south visitors dock for a total of 400 feet of reserved space for the nights of May 11 and 12
. Each boat going needs to call the La Conner Marina at (360) 466-3118 and give them the first night’s payment by credit card. (You will not get your money back if you cancel but will receive a credit for use later.)
The cruise is hosted by Bob & Jane Simica, Bob & Marsha Riek, and Joe & Carol Young
, so you know it will be fun!
OUR FIRST SAILING REPORT!
Wednesday racing has been going well, we are in our third week of the Numb Bum series. It is great to see more boats coming out every week. The turnout in the club after racing has been a huge success as well! Thanks to the volunteer bartenders and grill crew for their work.
Several BYC boats and crew traveled to Anacortes last weekend for the Tulip regatta and had some good races against challenging competition and classes.
This Saturday will be our first distance race around Vendovi Island. There will be a Skippers meeting at 9am at gate 3 and the race will start at 10am. --- Bart Maupin, Sail Fleet Captain
ABOUT THE CLUB’S SMALL BOATS:
Vice Commodore Michelle Bodtke
has been keeping your Jib Sheet editor up to date on the quest for mark boats and dinghies, and their powerplants. Here’s her latest update:
“We have bought
a new 90 hp motor for the rib and a used rib with a 40 hp motor. The used rib was bought from Steve Guyer. It needed repair work so we got it for a good deal. Craig Henderson, Terry Tavelli, Don Jorgensen, Tim Mumford
and myself have worked on the install of the new motor and repairs to the rib, which is still in progress. We are still looking for a used motor for the small AquaPro dinghy that we have - 10 to 15 hp, 4-stroke
, if anyone has one for sale or has a lead on one I would love to hear from them.”
WHO BETTER TO REMIND US ABOUT SAFETY?
We’re proud to say that Unity Group
is one of our Jib Sheet Sponsors, and they know how important proper maintenance of your vessel is toward safe operation! They asked us if we’d remind folks about Spring Maintenance steps, so we’ve attached our BYC maintenance checklist here
(it was developed in cooperation with the local charter and maintenance companies).
Thanks to Unity Group for reminding us
…and thanks to you for not only checking your boat over, but also for giving them a call whenever you have any kind of insurance needs!
WHAT A DEAL: CREW WINES THIS WEEK...
Washington State's House of Independent Producers is a collaboration of wineries and growers from the Columbia Valley in Washington State. Their intention is to promote the small family run wineries and growers of the region. It is made using sustainably grown fruit.
Their Red Wine is "flat-out delicious!" "Surprisingly multidimensional, it has lovely notes of raspberry, blackberry tart, and earth." [DrinkupNYC] Offering soft, seductive aromas of black cherry, mocha and ripe, juicy plums, it lures you in. On the palate a burst of raspberry fruit followed by layers of cocoa and dense black fruit with chewy, ripe tannins. The finish is soft and smooth with a touch of toasted oak and licorice.
Their White Un-Oaked Chardonnay from Independent Producers “is as close to a Chablis style white as you can find on the West Coast."
You can enjoy these wines at your BYC for only $ 20 a bottle, or order them at your favorite restaurant for $ 36 - $ 48 a bottle. So, come on down to your Club and take advantage of our great values! Contact Kathy Brown at KBrown@DeltaLatitude.com
with your wine suggestions for our BYC Lounge.
PLEASE: A LITTLE HELP IS NEEDED!
I love the BYC, and I'm glad to do anything I can to help the Club, but I need some help editing the Jib Sheet.
If you can spare three hours in each of some weeks of the year, I'd love to make you a co-editor! As you see, most stories come from contributors; your job would be to edit them, paste them into our mailing service's template, and get the sheet out. I do it on Monday afternoons, and then schedule it for mailing Tuesday morning early; you could do it on Monday evening, if you prefer.
I've prepared a detailed, step by step instruction set that covers the whole process in detail, so you can check off each task as you complete it. I'll also spend as much time as you need to learn the tasks cold! Then, after a few weeks, you will have gotten better at a variety of computer tasks, including using WORD, managing files and photos, and posting things to the BYC website.
Please call me at (360) 739-1528 or email email@example.com
. I'll be glad to answer any questions...and the more of you that respond, the less work there will be for any one of us! Thanks. And thanbks, too, to Kathy Brown and the late Jim Langei who helped me in the past! --- Joe Coons
