THIS WEEK'S FRIDAY@5: The Anacortes Yacht Club is coming to town as part of their 2014 shakedown cruise. They'll be in this club Friday April 4th for an evening of camaraderie. We will be having a special wine tasting that night to compliment the usual appetizers (the recent wine tasting event was such a success we’re planning another!) This time the event will be in conjunction with our Friiday@5, and will be "co-tasted" with the AYC. Plans include a tasting competition with AYC and BYC teams. (The grill will also be open for your use. So bring your favorite starter, something for the grill, and join me in welcoming the AYC and the cruising season.) --- Commodore Michele
UPCOMING EVENTS:
THE NEXT EDUCATION PROGRAM is April 16, Wednesday.  We'll have a group of the best pros around to answer all your boat-Maintenance questions in every category...

SCHOONER ZODIAC CRUISE -- Please join us on the windjammer Zodiac on Saturday, April 19, for a cruise out in Bellingham Bay.  The proceeds from this event will be used to upgrade the dinghy fleet for the not-for-profit Youth Sailing Lesson Program.  What a great way to spend a day with family and friends and support Youth Sailing!!  Go to www.byc.org for more information and to sign up for this event.

TUESDAY APRIL 22, from 6-9 pm, Washington Divers are hosting a Community Education Seminar at the BYC about Sea Star Wasting Syndrome, which is happening all along our coastline and affects boaters and divers alike, as well as anyone who is concerned about the coastal environment. A professor at WWU just got a grant to study this and find out why it is happening. The seminar will be held in the (NEW!) Ward Room and will be free and open to the public. More details here.

CRUISING NEWS:
THE NEXT CRUISE IS APRIL 11-13: We are going to Roche Harbor! There are fun, exciting and relaxing activities planned: Docktail Happy Hour, Karaoke Night, Bocce Ball Tournament, Boating Challenge, Ladies Spa Getaway, Saturday BBQ and Sunday morning Brunch.
Once again, we have reserved the party barge for all our group activities.  Come join us in the quaint setting of Roche Harbor, known to be one of the most scenic harbors in the San Juan Islands.
During our Roche Harbor Cruise, the spa will be open from 10 am – 6 pm.  They offer nail services, facials, body treatment and massage.  All services (you can see them here) include use of the steam rooms and relaxation lounge!  The spa recommends booking services in advance by calling the spa 360.378.9888, (they do not have online booking).  They will offer $10 off any regularly priced spa service and they also post daily specials at the spa.
Meanwhile, the Roche Harbor harbormaster prefers that we send in our slip reservations as a group.  If you are planning on coming, please send me the following information on your boat and I will submit all our requests: Your name, Boat name, Length overall (LOA), Beam, preferred side tie and your arrival date.
Let's go cruising!  --- Angie Santosuosso, BYC Cruise Chair thetolsmas@yahoo.com
DISTANCE CRUISE TO DESOLATION SOUND! We have hosts for the Desolation Sound Cruise in September,Richard & Leona Hanset. "Rich & Lee", are non-resident members from California and spend their summers up here cruising the San Juans and Gulf Islands.  They have been on numerous trips to Desolation Sound and have extensive cruising experience in leading and cruise hosting & planning.
Rich has a tentative plan for this cruise which has been extended to 16 days. It includes stops at: Secret Cove, Squirrel Cove, Prideaux Haven, Big Bay, Cordero Lodge, Blind Bay, Campbell River, Comox, Nanaimo, Telegraph Harbor and Todd Inlet (Butchart Gardens).  Rich and Lee have previously visited  all of the venues/ports on the suggested route several times.  The proposed dates of the cruise are September 14th-29th.  Jim & I are going to be the co-hosts for this cruise and this will be our first trip to Desolation Sound, so we're excited to have you join us.
Please let us know now your interest in attending this distance cruise so we can begin to plan for the cruise more extensively! Send me an email if you are even remotely interested, so that you can be included in the design of what is sure to be an amazing cruise! Angie Santosuosso thetolsmas@yahoo.com

OUR COMMODORE'S COLUMN:
Our boating season is upon us, and believe it or not, Opening Day is just a month away. This year's theme is The Land of Oz. The festivities start at 10:30 with the members only (and their guests) reception; blessing of the fleet starts at Noon; boat parade at 1:30 followed by the Pirate BBQ and music in the lounge.
It's shaping up to be a fantastic summer on the water and in the clubhouse.
Let me repeat: Many thanks to Mike Allsop and all the volunteers who have helped with the remodel, and thank you to our Board of Trustees and Bridge for all their work. ---- Serving you from the Helm, Michele Bodtke, Commodore

STEVE ROSS'S PHOTO CONTEST:
Last week's picture was taken at Paradise Cove, with a view of Deadman's Reef near Freeport, The Bahamas. Jim Gibson identified the exact location, while Dean Altschuler, John Raasch, Phil Dyer, Mark Harding, and Terry Tavelli were all in the right country. (Maybe the beer gave it away -- Strongback is a tasty stout brewed in Freeport.)
Last week's list of winners overlooked Joe Bartlett, my apologies, Joe!
This week's picture is of a quaint beachside establishment. If you know the location, send your answer todrsteveross@gmail.com
Jib Sheet Editor this week is Joe Coons
