Big Picture Number Six

I know it’s number six because it’s been that long since my arm was not in a sling; it came off last Wed and boy did I wear it out on Saturday night…did you know it’s impossible to dance to Joe Young and the Unusual Suspects without moving your arm…and by extension, your shoulder.  Oh well, we’re only young once.
This week it’s time for your Board of Trustees to get down to business.  We’ve had a fun interim since our transition meeting, but now it’s ‘go time’. We need to deal with budgets: for cruising, social events and taking care of our most important asset (well, second to you, the membership), the building. We have been taking care of some really deferred maintenance, such as wet and dry rot on the outside deck stairway; the beams over the Youth sailing locker and the floor under kitchen dishwasher, as well as taking on some improvements such as moving the taps at the bar so the ‘under 21 crowd’ can be in the middle lounge. We know we need to take care of business, and we have been very fiscally conservative, but now it’s time to plan and budget, so if you have any ideas, let me know.
In fact, I’ll make it really easy for you: December 14, 2016, the first quarterly Town Hall meeting will give you a chance to tell me in person what’s important to you as a club member. Name your Number ONE benefit of membership and tell me about it. We will be wrapping up and approving our annual budget the next evening so this is literally the last chance to tell me/us what you think.
Coming up next Wednesday is the Annual ‘Tom and Jerry’ party.  “Geri” and I are looking forward to serving you at this traditional Holiday Season kick-off. This year will feature a short presentation by our BTC Scholarship recipient, Jacob Mayer, to thank us and share his experiences in the Fisheries program and a short film of his most recent internship project. Paul Meyer will also be introducing this year’s Sink the Dingy beneficiary, so don’t be late, this may be the year that we run out of T&J batter.
So, with that,
‘cast no wake on our burgee’
Commodore Neil
Do you remember this guy?   Well after 7 years on the BYC Board and serving on nearly every club committee, you’d think we’d put him out to pasture!!!   However, Past “Commenormous” Knowles is still alive, kicking and is the current BYC Sail Fleet Captain.  He wants to invite all members, skippers, and crew to the club on Friday November 18 for the Annual BYC Sail Fleet Awards Dinner/Pasta Feed.   Bar Opens with $2 MicroBrew Pints from 5 to 6, dinner at 6pm and the awards at 7pm.

23 November 2016

Make your plans now to join your BYC Bridge and Trustees for one of the most long-standing of BYC traditions... the annual Tom and Jerry Party.  Designed as a way to kick-off the holiday season, the Tom and Jerry Party is always held the Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving.  Please remember that this is a 'members only' event - so if you haven't yet paid your dues, this is a great time to do so!
Commodore Neil and I will be serving up the complimentary 'Tom and Jerry' drinks (bet you can't stop at just one!) and we look forward to seeing you there!
-PC Michele (aka 'Comma Momma')

It’s November, and time to start thinking about the holiday season.  Begin your planning now for the 2016 Lighted Boat Parade!  The festivities begin at 5:30pm on Saturday, December 3rd as we head for the rendezvous off of the Ferry Terminal and cruise along the waterfront.  We’ll take a swing through the boat launch basin before heading back to the club for appetizers, homemade soups, and the awards ceremony.  We have several wonderful prizes this year, and it’s always fun and festive!  New to boat decorating?  Never fear, our own PC Steve Ross will be presenting a seminar on Boat Lighting Techniques and Safety.  Keep an eye on the website ( for developing details, as you won’t want to miss this traditional Bellingham Yacht Club event!
-Scott McEniry, Fleet Captain
Thank you to the many volunteers that helped out for the Commodore's Ball!!  You are the very folks that make this Club such an amazing place!!
PC Terry Tavelli, PC Michele Bodtke, VC Jim and Lurinda Gibson, Mike and Maya Allsop, Dave and Missy Steffen, Vickie and Chris Olson, Steve and Monica Hayward, Ariane Ringler, Cathy Franklin, Marsha Riek, Mark Santosuosso, Jeff Vernon, Lisa McArdle, and my great friends, Tony and Cloie Choppa and Steve Cremer and Judy Blair.
If I missed your name here - I truly apologize!  It was a VERY busy weekend, but I sincerely hope that everyone had a great time and enjoyed their evening in the Scottish Highlands.

A fitbit was found at the Commodore's Ball.  If it's yours, please contact to describe it.  Thanks!
Are you chairing an event or committee and need some help for a particular event?  Send a note to and I'll put a call-out here!

The 92nd annual Commodore’s Ball is now history, and what a night it was! Cocktails by Levey, catered dining, music by our own Joe and Carol Young, it just doesn’t get much better than that!

The featured event this week is the annual awards banquet for the Sail Fleet. The evening will start with $2 pints as a Happy Hour special from 5 to 6, followed by presentations and awards along with a pasta dinner! Don’t miss it!

Here’s the skinny for this week!

TUE: Bar and lounge open at 5!

WED: Burgers hot off the grill by Chef Dick!

THUR: Monica’s Mexican, with the best carne asada north of the border and those tasty bean burritos!

FRI: Sail Fleet awards and pasta feed!

MON next: MNF with the Texans vs the Raiders!

See you in the lounge!

Attention Cruisers!

The next Cruising Committee meeting is December 1 at 7pm at the club.  We're getting close to finalizing our slate of cruises for next year.  If you love cruising, please join us and help us plan our cruises for next year.

Tony Fleming, the man who created the fine Fleming 50, 55, 65, 75 foot powerboats, has created a wonderful set of boat travelog videos.  They are worth watching during quiet wintry days when we're in harbor! The link should take you to the series.

Did you know that Amazon will donate 0.5% of qualified purchases to the charity of the purchaser’s choice? There is a selection available to select alternative organizations such as the Bellingham Sailing Foundation. I scrolled through the (extensive) list of available organizations using “sailing foundation” as keywords and found the Bellingham Sailing Foundation, Inc. listed as a qualified organization. After making the selection the Amazon page posted a note saying Amazon would reach out to the Sailing Foundation to ensure they were able to accept donations from Amazon.
