July 2-July 8, 2013
THURSDAY IS THE FOURTH OF JULY! Bring your picnic and hang out for the fireworks, and be sure to come early and stay late to avoid the parking crush. See you there...
FRIDAY AT FIVE THIS WEEK! With a Red, White & Blue theme, sponsors are Mick & Laura Corcoran with help from Carrie & Larry Beck. There'll be brats on the grill, so please bring your appys and accompaniments! Steve Moore's Poster is here!
ONLY ONE TABLE LEFT! It's the big one, and it's $400 to "buy" it with your boat's name, it's brand and style, and your family's names. Contact Joe Coons at firstname.lastname@example.org or (360) 739-1528. LAST CHANCE: If you already have a table, but want to change the plaque, do it free by contracting Joe now --- no charge!
THE PRICE OF PROGRESS: Effective 8/1, a number of our bar prices are going up slightly by two or four bits to cover our costs, the Bar Committee has announced. (They're still the lowest in town for our big pours and drafts!)
THE JULY 4 CRUISE is on to Garrison Bay, and as is traditional, it's run by Pete & Jamie Foti. The Flyer is here.
MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY NEEDED! If event planning is “not your thing”, here is a great alternative way to make an important contribution to the club. With Marian Welsh’s retirement from the BYC Membership Secretary post, the Club needs a replacement. This fulfilling position usually involves only a few hours per month on your own schedule, with few meetings to attend, and it quickly involves you and has you making new friends.
The Membership Secretary compiles new member applications, passes them through to the Board, prepares and mails new member packets, maintains our member data base, and shares information with the Jib Sheet, email, and name tag teams. The Secretary also helps with club mailings and the annual membership renewals, responding to membership information requests. Training is provided as the job is passed along. Contact Marian if you are interested at (360-527-2741) for more details.
BURGER SPECIAL CONTINUES: Our Wednesday Weekly Racing & Burger Night has continued to be a success and a fun evening at the club. In addition to our cheeseburgers, we will be offering vegetarian black bean burgers for our Club's non-meat eaters. Carnivore or not, come on down and enjoy a tasty burger and beverage this Wednesday! Also, if you'd like to get involved with grilling, please contact Matt Ouilette at email@example.com.
BUCCANEER'S CRUISE IS COMING: Aug. 16, 17 & 18 at Inati Bay, our outstation. This is all-ages event: treasure hunts, costume contests with awesome prizes, singalongs on Friday night, a movie on a sail, and dancing to Jasmine Greene and her band on Saturday.
Don't have a boat? No problem - bring your tent and camp-out. Water transportation will be available to and from on Saturday. Look for more info coming your way in next week's Jib Sheet!
MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR NOVEMBER 2: That's the date the 88th Annual Commodore's Ball will be held. This year we are having a Venetian Masquerade Ball. Color theme is gold, royal purple, silver and black. Now is the time to start searching for the perfect dress, and favorite mask, men included! I'm looking forward to a fun night of camaraderie and dancing. I hope you will join me. Details to follow later this summer. --- Michele Bodtke, Vice Commodore
YOUTH SAILING NEWS:
Thanks to all who participated in the Youth Sailing Family Barbecue this past Friday. The enthusiasm of the kids and the lively discussions among the parents showed that the future looks bright for the Youth Sailing program. Special thanks go out to John Perry & Craig Henderson who did the barbecuing, Katy Day who prepared the delicious brownies, Marian Welsh who did a great job of greeting and registering everyone, and to my wife, Anna Ahlen, who organized and prepared the food. The program is only as strong as the volunteers who turn out to support it, so if you have some time you can volunteer, please let us know. --- Arne Ahlen
WOW IS JULY 27! Calling all women sailors and boat owners to participate in this year’s Women on the Water Regatta. We have skippers looking for crew, and we have women looking for boats, so we can connect everyone! Tierney Owens & Kathy Hansen are our WOW crew liaisons so to participate call Tierney at 360-305-7909!
Thanks to Tim Mumford, a one-man sponsor-recruiting crew. We have a ton of great raffle prizes this year thanks to Tim and all the businesses who donated. For a list, and to early-register, check the website at http://www.wowregatta.com.
Our next meeting for those interested in volunteering is Thursday, July 11th, at 5:30. ---Sally Poorman
BYC RACERS ARE BUSY: Summer has greeted the racing fleet with light winds for recent races, though the Race Committee has done an exceptional job mixing up the courses and getting us out and around the buoys. Meanwhile, three boats started our first Summer Solstice race. And everyone made it at least to the half way mark of the course before the wind completely shut off. Thanks to Rick Laursen for volunteering to organize the first Race. Our next one will be July 12th. Meet at 5pm to determine the course. --- Bart Maupin
PITCH POSTERS ARE HERE and I need a few volunteers to help post them around Puget Sound; our intent is to have them posted in every yacht club and marine store from Olympia to Vancouver, BC! We already have a person putting them up in Vancouver, Bellingham and Seattle, so we especially need help with Tacoma, Olympia and Victoria. Simply walk in with poster (tape & pins) in hand and ask the manager for permission and the location to post.
If you are travelling to these towns and would be willing to put up some posters please contact me to coordinate. We have a stack of PITCH posters in the front lobby and you are free to grab one if you can post it in a place that potential entrants may see it, just make sure to let me know where it is so we don’t duplicate efforts. Thanks! Randy Nulle 360-920-3178

This week went by and all of a sudden summer showed up. Please have fun on your boat and don’t get burned! Yea summer is finally here!

Be sure to account for getting in and out of the parking lot. Come early and stay late. And we have the first July Friday@5 sponsored by Fleet Captain Mick Corcoran and his lovely wife Laura. They need several new members to step up and help them….contact Mick if you can!
We are also looking for a few new members to step up sponsoring our Aug 16th F@5! Get together, think of a theme, and get going! If you need help, call me and I will be there!
The Past Commodore’s cruise is coming up; don’t miss it. It’s in Anacortes, we have rented some dock space, and rumor has it there may be music! Check the Jib Sheet for the details and come by land or sea!
Please get in those summer recipes for the Cook Book Committee and remember if you bring a dish to the club bring the recipe! You can also go to our website and enter your recipe on line. Get your favorite ones in, and win a First Mates Cook Book! (By the way, there are a number of dishes and utensils at the Club that belong to Members: please pick them up or let us know if you are donating them to the BYC!)
So glad the Youth Sailing dinner went well! Great going, Anna & Arnie Ahlen, as well as all of the volunteers that helped, the Youth program appreciates all of your efforts! If you have kids that want to learn to sail get in your registrations soon! With this nice weather classes will fill up fast!

STEVE ROSS'S PHOTO CONTEST...
Many people correctly identified last week's picture of the Two Boats Pub in Long Itchington, Warwickshire, England: Terry Tavelli (who had a meal there once), Lisa Megard, John Van Haalen, Murray Hill, Steve Moore, John Raasch, Michele Bennett, Mark Harding, & Jim Gibson. My apologies if I've missed anyone...
