Along with Sink the Dinghy 2010 Presentation

The Sink the Dinghy Committee will conclude its 2010 campaign by making a presentation to members of the recipient family  at this week's F@5.  Please come and help celebrate what you, the BYC membership, have been able to accomplish with the 2010 Sink the Dinghy Campaign!  Thanks again to the BYC, Wheel and Keel, St. Brendan's Church, Dead Pirates Society, Saturna Capital,  Allegiant Airlines and to the makers of Shyanne's quilt:  Jamie Ashton, Judy Kehoe, and Margaret Marr.

Let's start the New Year out with a Great Friday's @ Five!  Bring your fantastic appetizers to share.

As you know, we have F@5's twice a month.  If you have a F@5 idea, please let me know.  Or, better yet, contact me to sign up to host a F@5!  Contact me to reserve YOUR date!  Submitted by Steve Moore, PC

Happy New Year!!

I hope that everyone found their own special way to ring in the new year - the memories of 2010 are very dear to me but I'm excited to set new goals and to see what we can continue to build together. I want to dedicate this week's column to a very special member. On 31 December, Dick Grimshaw stepped down from his post as Assistant Treasurer. I'd like to thank Dick - on behalf of the entire Board and membership - for the outstanding job he did in that role. Mike Welsh has been mentoring under Dick for a few months now and was voted in at last month's board meeting to assume the financial day-to-day reins of managing the clubs accounts. As PC Joe Coons and Dick Grimshaw will heartily agree -- this is no small task! So, please give a pat on the back to Dick when you see him in the bar for all his wonderful service to this Club.

At your service, Commodore Michele

Join the Race Committee, No Experience Necessary

Hello BYC volunteers,

I was just writing to get an idea of who we will have for Race Committee (RC) work this year and what level of involvement you feel comfortable with, if any.

My plan is to start with a list of volunteers and what they would like to do and we will piece it together from there to help put everyone in a comfortable spot. The racing year will run generally from April through September. Anything helps and the more people we have to spread the work around to the better.

If you are new to Race Committee work and wonder what is involved, the Race committee is the group of people on the water that are running the races and
setting the courses for the participants. The only requirements are the ability to be on a boat on the water for a few hours at a time depending on
the event. We will coach you from there and we will tell you where and when and what to bring. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are usually 5pm-8pm. Weekends
would be Saturday 9-11am or in some cases all day both days (8am-4pm) All times approximate....

Thanks, Randy Nulle; BYC Sail fleet Captain 360-920-3178

Interested in a BYC Investment Club?

Member Alex Marr is inviting Members to a meeting to explore the idea of a BYC Investment Club.  The meeting is planned for January 11, 2011 (Tuesday) at 6:00 PM in the Commodores Room of the Lounge. All interested members are invited to attend this meeting.

"With many of our members in retirement or near retirement, learning about investing and possible financial benefit from participation in a shared portfolio may be of great interest. Social interaction with like-minded members will also add an important and enjoyable dimension to the club experience.  Other investment clubs across the country have found that new investors will discover a secure and supportive environment to learn the basics of investing, while experienced investors will gain an opportunity to sharpen investing skills.  This initial organizing meeting will assess the level of interest among members and discuss outlines of a general partnership which is necessary to facilitate club activities and pooling of financial resources," says Alex.  Contact him at 360-856-2553, marra@asme.org.

Margaret Marr nominated as an Incognito Volunteer Hero for her work on Sink the Dinghy project

To quote the members who submitted her name, "... would like to nominate Margaret Marr for her hundreds of hours of work on the darling quilt she made for the 'Sink the Dinghy' little girl.  We were so impressed by the workmanship and the thoughtfulness in the designs and the small hidden treasures that she incorporated into the quilt.... Margaret is a very self-effacing sort of person and says, 'Oh, it is nothing,' but believe us, it is definitely very much SOMETHING!"  --Submitted to the Jib Sheet editors by BYC members who wish to remain anonymous.

[Thank you Margaret Marr  for volunteering your time and talents along with Judy Kehoe and Jamie Ashton to design and make the quilt for a little  Shyanne who will, hopefully, receive some much needed comfort from it. --ed.]

If you know of someone who is an incognito volunteer hero for the BYC, please submit his or her name to the Jib Sheet editors along with why you are submitting it to Jib Sheet Volunteer nominations. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

The Annual, Traditional Boat Show Bus Trip is Coming!

It’s time to get your Boat Show Bus reservations in: Great Fun!  The date is Saturday, January 22 leaving at 830 AM sharp from the club, and the return leaves the show at 5:30.   The cost is $45 per person and includes both  the in-the-water and inside shows (you can do both or either, as long as you like during the day). Food and drink is provided both on the way down and the way back, and the big, luxurious eliminates the parking and driving hassle, and if the weather’s bad, the driver deals with it.  Besides, you can have fun meeting new BYC friends!

You must sign up and pay at the bar!  For questions, Jody Erickson can be contacted at jodbreezin@gmail.com and her phone is (360) 223-2119.  Matt Dennis is co-chair. Remember, you must be added to the list and pay at the barSpecial thanks to San Juan Sailing for sponsoring the show tickets!

ROSTER PHOTOS PREVIEW

Thanks for all the great photos for the Jib Sheet so far!

I have edited the approximately 46 Member pictures that came in, and you can see the way the look here. These aren’t in any order yet, and I still have to add member names.

It turns out we still have time to add more pictures to the pages, so I’ll accept pictures up to January 10 at the email address below!

Note also that I’m cropping your pictures so they are square, so the tighter partners are together, the better the shot looks.  One or two are fuzzy; that’s because I got very small files (probably “thumbnails”) that start to break up when they are printed even only this large, only about 2.3 x 2.3 inches; be sure you send me the original picture!  I can “pick out” a tight shot of you from a larger picture...look at the two pictures on the first page where I showed Gary and Mary Baker’s submission and what I got out of it!  If your picture is here, but you have a better shot, email me the better one at joejudyc@comcast.net.  --- Joe Coons

If you know of someone who is an incognito volunteer hero for the BYC, please submit his or her name to the Jib Sheet editors along with why you are submitting it to Jib Sheet Volunteer nominations. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Remember to submit your articles to
Jibsheet@byc.org  Deadline is Monday noon.
