Greetings Bellingham Yacht Members.  I am writing as the BYC Treasurer about a very serious matter.
I am confident that all members appreciate, value, and take pride in the ‘all-volunteer’ nature of the BYC.  We get together twice a year for Club Scrubs, we have a team of volunteer Bartenders, we have the Pirates who take care of the Inati Bay outstation, we have the Jib Sheet editor, we have the Trustees and Directors, the Committee chairs who plan and execute all of our land and sea social activities, recruit new members, maintain our gardens and buildings, develop policy and preserve our financial security to make sure that we can always pay our bills; and finally, we have the Assistant Treasurer who actually pays the bills.  We have had three Assistant Treasurers over the last 15+ years: PC Joe Coons, Dick Grimshaw and Mike Welch; and now, Mike is ‘retiring’, as of September 30, 2015.
The Club needs help! We have to replace him which isn’t going to be easy. The desired qualifications include: 3+years experience with Quick Books as a full charge bookkeeper; experience working with a club or volunteer organization; Balance Sheet and Income Statement preparation.
We would rather have a volunteer, but if we can't find a volunteer, we are at the point where we may have to hire a service. This is serious and we will pay a qualified person.
If you are interested, curious or have a lead on someone, please contact Neil Bennett, Rear Commodore and Treasurer in confidence at 206.919.0371 or

The 2015 Laser District 22 Championships in Bellingham

The race committee banged off 6 races Saturday, and another 3 on Sunday.  Saturday produced some consistent 8 to 10 knot breeze, which finally picked up to hiking at the end of the day.  Sunday started with a mirror pond shore postponement, but turned into a flattened sails 15 knot thigh burner 1st race.  The rest of the day settled down to 8 to 10 out of the West.  The courses were square, and Bellingham Bay put on her Sunday best.  Special thanks to PRO Michele Bodtke and her Committee for an outstanding job!!

This was another great event in Bellingham, with mother nature and the good folks of the Bellingham Yacht Club doing it proper.   Time to shift gears.  Next up is the mighty Dale Jepsen One Design Regatta, on September 19th and 20th.  Save the date!  You will not regret it.

Bellinghamsters Invade Anacortes
Blackfoot, Eleven, Extreme and Vitesse all participated in the AYC Windermere Regatta over the weekend…and two boats came home victorious. Blackfoot, skippered by Vice Commodore Mick Corcoran placed third in Division 4. Trustee Missy Steffen and her husband Dave, supported by their merry band of Pirates and Hamsters placed first in Division 1.  It was an excellent weekend on the race course: sunny, consistent wind, no waves (thank the big tides and mostly adverse current) and tight, competitive and friendly racing.
Neil Bennett, Past Fleet Captain and Pink Boat Regatta Co-Chair.
PS, speaking of Pink Boat Regatta, August 30 is nipping at our heels. Racers, time to register. Volunteers, time to come out of the woodwork. Sponsors, time to get your name in front of millions of appreciative fund raisers for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. For more information contact Neil or

Congratulations to BYC racers aboard Blackfoot, Extreme, and Vitesse, as well as other BYC members spread across other boats at the Anacortes Yacht Club's Windermere Regatta this past weekend. Dave Steffen and the crew of Vitesse took home a first place in their class after the weekend and Mick Corcoran and the crew of Blackfoot found creative uses for their 3rd place trophy from their division.  --Bart Maupin

We have decided to cancel this years Pt Roberts race on June 27th, and replace it with a redo of the windless round Lummi race that was previously attempted. Calendars will be updated and more information will follow.  --Bart Maupin

Why why why….. can I not remember to use sunscreen?  Man… what another gorgeous hot and sunny northwest weekend, and sunburn!  I spent the two days on the Bay helping out with the Laser District 22 Championship Regatta.   This ILCA – BYC event hosted 24 sailors from Portland to B.C. battling for points towards the Laser World Championship.   Local BYC sailors included Regatta Chair Mike Poulos,  M.I.T College and former BYC Youth Sailor Robyn Lesh with and  BYC Youth Racing Team members Jacob Finston and Jack Knowles.    In addition to the Regatta’s  “Chairenormous”  Mike Poulos, thanks go out to all of those who volunteered including Co-PRO’s Michele Bodtke & Jamie Ashton; BYC Members,  Lee Laney, Tom Ashton and Dick Grimshaw; “Should be Members” Jerry Roloson, Erik Coburn and Steve & Andrea Hood; Regional USSA Judge Charlie Macaulay and Brian Watkins Staff PC from CYC-Seattle.
I heard that the Friday Steak night last week was a sold out event.  I, unfortunately, missed it due to a severe case of “Couchpotato-itis” after a very busy week.   Steak Nights only happen through BYC volunteering efforts.  Contact bar Manager Steve Hayward  if you able to help out at
Last Thursday, BYC Youth Race Director Scott Wilson held the first BYC Youth Racing Team Meeting.  It was well attended by nearly 25 Youth Sailors from ages 8 – 18.  The BYC Youth Racing team will be divided into two groups, the Advanced Team coached by Miles Johannessen,  that  will be sailing FJ’s, Lasers, 29ers, J24’s & Etchells and the Opti Team coached by Megan Link using the 6 new club Opti’s.   This race team practices two days a week and plans to attend 15 regattas between Eugene OR and Vancouver BC.   For more information on the Race Team visit
In addition to the BYC Race Team, there are many open sessions in BYC’s Learn-To-Sail.  If you have or know of a youth from ages 8-18 who is interested in learning to sail, then tell them about BYC’s US SAILING Youth Programs.  Visit or contact BYC Youth Sailing Program Coordinator Megan Link,

This Week's Photo Contest

Last week's photograph was taken between Matia and Lummi Islands, looking south at (from the left) Lummi, Cypress, and Orcas Islands, among others. Clark and Barnes Islands are seen as dark dots on the right. Trustee Rick Laursen and David New identified the exact location, while Quinn Selsor, PC Michele Bennett, and Jamie Foti were close.

This week we see a quiet sea-side town. If you know the location, send your answer to
