SAILING AWARDS BANQUET SOON! This traditional event is scheduled for Saturday, November 16! Put it on your calendar now to enjoy the fun and recognition of the fleet for all its active sailors during the 2013 season! (See Racing News story below.)
REMEMBER THE "DRY SPELL": The BYC bar liquor services will be closed (though the Clubhouse may be open) from 11:00 AM November 8th until 11:00 AM November 13th. The full lounge/bar service will resume the evening of November 13th.
After two years, the Cookbook Project has progressed to the point of publication, thanks to the many BYC members who have contributed recipes to it. The project will sponsor one more Friday@5 on 15 November and the main theme will be soup and breads
. (Other dishes are also welcome!) Any member who has not yet submitted recipes to the cookbook or members who would like to submit another have until 20 November to input recipes via the BYC website. (Go to members.byc.org and click “Cookbook” on the top menu.) Sorry, no recipe can be added after the order has been placed with the printer. Our goal is to have the BYC Cookbook available before Valentines Day.

SUPPORT OUR YOUTH SAILING:
The Bellingham Sailing Foundation
supports youth sailing activities here. To date, they have helped raise $56,000 for the purchase of the seven FJ's jointly used by BYC Youth Sailing and High School Sailing Programs. BSF has also provided funds and volunteers to build the $20K Youth Sailing Dock at Zuanich Point; a traveling trailer for high school "away" races; and accepted donations of two J24's for instructional programs. The Foundation also gives scholarships to families who couldn't otherwise afford sailing program costs.
Now it's time to step up doing our share! For 2014 the high school team needs funds for new sails and travel costs, and our BYC Youth Sailing wants to purchase a new fleet of racing-quality Opti's, making the J24's available to young sailors for Wednesday night races.
Please consider a tax deductible donation to the Bellingham Sailing Foundation (a registered 501(c)(3) organization). Look for the BSF brochure at the BYC Clubhouse; visit www.BellinghamSailingFoundation.org
; or contact Vice Commodore Jonathan Knowles firstname.lastname@example.org
/ 360-303-5465. Thank you!
SOCIAL PROGRAMS/CLUBHOUSE EVENTS:
We are still looking for co-chairs for this committee. Please contact Missy Steffen (email@example.com
) or myself. Or, if you want to chair a particular event all the better! Thanks for your consideration; chairing an event is really fun and rewarding, and a great way to get to know fellow members. --- Michele Bodtke, Commodore
WHAT NEXT? BYC Members may like to know that over-the-counter paper charts are going away in 2014! Here is a link for more information: http://www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/staff/news/2013/papercharts.html --- Dave Yell
BUILDING & HOUSE NEWS:
worked with Joe Coons to replace tiles in the BYC Lounges last week. Mike Allsop
is leading a team studying improvements to the Ward Room. Thanks to all who keep our bug facility ship-shape!
MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL IS BACK:
Back by popular demand, the BYC bar and lounge will be open every Monday night throughout the football season. The bar will open on Mondays at 5pm and close upon completion of the Monday Night football game. Drink specials and bar snacks will be available so come on down and enjoy watching some football with friends. $1 tacos will start back up on Monday Oct 21st. and will go thru the football season as well.
LISTEN UP: Matt Ouilette, Bar Chairman, can't do it all alone: He really needs help with these. Call him at 220-9496 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
to pitch in. Thanks!
HOLIDAY FUN SEASON WILL SOON BE HERE...
Our traditional Tom & Jerry Party is Wednesday, November 27
. "Tom" and "Jerry" (Michele and Neil) will be presiding at the traditional bowl as we enjoy complementary cups of cheer beginning around 5:00 p.m. this day before Thanksgiving. It's a great season kickoff, so put it on your "Holiday To Do List"! The event is open to BYC Members and their families only...no "outside" guests
... then December 7 will be the Lighted Boat Parade
(with the traditional party). Some boaters may wish to show their lights and spirit cruising the Bay on Friday the 6th, but that will be "unofficial and on their own"...
: It's was a busy October for the BYC racing fleet. We started off with the majority of the fleet being blown off the water for the Marmetta Cup
. Flying Circus
persevered and was the only boat able to complete the race. The following weekend Flying Circus
competed in the Puget Sound Sailing Championships
in Seattle while Dreamtime
sailed in the Orcas Island Yacht Club's Benson Cup
. The next foggy Saturday was spent racing around Jack Island
. While light winds and fog greeted us, the wind held enough for everyone to finish. Vitesse
stuck around Seattle to compete in the Seattle Yacht Club's Grand Prix Regatta
, while a few of us traded in our foul weather gear for shorts and T shirts while enjoying sunshine on San Francisco Bay during the Richmond Yacht Club's Great Pumpkin Regatta
. Now we're heading back to the cooler fall temperatures and looking forward to the season's final race, the Orcas Island Yacht Club's Round The County Race
Remember, Saturday November 16th will be our end of the year awards dinner and party. Everyone is welcome.
Thanks everyone for a fun year. --- Bart Maupin
FROM THE COMMODORE...
I was thrilled to see everyone in their finery this past Saturday at the sold-out Commodore's Ball. All the wonderful and interesting masks finished the room perfectly. It was a lovely evening with good friends - thank you all for a perfect night!
I want to thank Wendy Bevan
for being such a tireless party planner. She took the vision and ran with it - you are the best. I would also like to say a special thank you to Susan Henderson
for preparing all the napkins - a very large job!! And of course, the night had special touches from Missy Steffen
and Jane Sylvester
- thank you both for being there early to help Wendy with the appetizer table. It was beautiful! Thanks also to all those that helped decorate Friday night and clean-up on Sunday - The Levines, The Jorgensens, Veronica V., Carla Lee , Jane S.
- and so many others!!! And to Craig Henderson
and Gary Smith
for moving the gondola and scenery panels. It truly was a group effort - thank you all and thank you to all my guests for the special evening. --- Respectfully, Michele Bodtke, Commodore
STEVE ROSS'S PHOTO CONTEST... No one recognized last week's picture of Petros, the pelican mascot of the Greek Island of Mykonos, although Jim Gibson did name the species. For an interesting story of the original Petros, read this: http://tinyurl.com/oqhk6sb.
