COMMODORE'S COLUMN

July, summer, Yeah!

So I will be assisting Eric Yaremko on Flying Circus this Tuesday and Friday at Whidbey Island Race Week. We will also be attempting to win the Steve Moore Regatta this Wednesday on Blackfoot.

As some folks know I have been having a few health issues lately but hopefully will be on the mend by late August.

Last Friday's Steak Night was a fun event with over 50 steaks cooked to order flying off the grill. Since I wasn't there, I assume Dick Labadie did the cooking and Sandy also helped. Be sure to give them a big thank you. They really work their butts off and I am most appreciative.

The Buccaneers Cruise is coming up and it would be nice to get a head count for the planners of this event. Please notify Rick Laursen if you plan to attend.

Also a reminder about payments on your accounts. When mailing a check, please include a note or something designating where the payment is to be applied or what it's for. Luidmila, our bookkeeper would appreciate it and it would remedy her confusion when somebody just mails a check in an envelope addressed to BYC.

Thanks, and more next week.

PACIFIC RIM
Have you seen Piper?
Desperately wanted for the upcoming PacRim Regatta in Nakhodka!

About 14” tall, 24” wingspan. Brown with a white head, yellow feet and beak, and beady eyes. Looks like a bald eagle.
Last seen 9/13/2014 at the closing ceremonies for the last PacRim Regatta here in Bellingham!
This Team Bellingham Mascot has participated in two prior PacRim regattas. After suffering serious injuries in Port Stephens, Australia, in 2012, Piper was mended and spent a relaxing week in Cairns before flying back to the US. He recuperated well under the watchful eye of Dawn and Joe, and proudly represented the team once again here in Bellingham in 2014.
Please help Piper, named for one of our earliest Commodores, realize his dream of competing at all of the PacRim Regatta venues. If he is to make it to Russia this time around, he must make a reappearance by Sun July 24.
Possible Reward for information leading to his whereabouts.

CRUISE FLEET NEWS
Over the 4th of July weekend, several BYC boats headed over to Garrison Bay with Wheel and Keel for the annual Independence Day raft-up.  Saturday night we had a best drink mixing contest with lots of delicious entries but ultimately the prize went to Arianne Ringler for her Garrison Bay Breeze concoction.   On Sunday we explored English Camp and climbed to the top of Young Hill for a spectacular view of the bay followed that evening by a boat-hop potluck dinner.  Monday was a leisurely day but windy, which prevented us from taking the dinghies over to Roche Harbor for the fireworks so we watched them from our boats in Garrison Bay.  It was a fun weekend and our thanks go to Jamie and Pete Foti for organizing this annual cruise.  Also thanks for Guy an Barbara Thiemann for letting us hang out on their boat and Steve and Meredith Ross for hosting liars dice.

Sucia Island Family Luau Cruise

Please join us August 19-21 for our annual Family Luau cruise to beautiful Sucia Island.  Show your Aloha spirit and wear your favorite Hawaiian shirt or outfit and we'll bring the leis!  We have reserved the group shelter located between Shallow and Echo Bay. It all kicks off Friday night with smores around the campfire.  Then on Saturday, we'll have a Hawaiian Luau with tons of great food and games with prizes.  This is a great event and fun for the whole family.  For more info. and to sign up go to
http://cruising.byc.org/.  If you can help with this event, please email Vickie Olson at olsonvj@aol.com.

Prevost Harbor cruise cancelled due to no host.

DINGHY FLEET NEWS
YOUTH SAILORS HEAD TO THE GORGE

Some of the BYC youth team went to the Gorge this past week. Sammy Farkas, Ria West, Emma Powell in Optis and Jack Knowles and Sean Powell in Lasers to train with World and Olympic coaches for the week followed by the WIND regatta. All the sailors were challenged and improved by the "Gorge Wind Factory" and learned just how fast a small dinghy can go. Thank you Columbia Gorge Racing Assoc. for such a great week.

LASERS NEEDED

The youth race team and learn to sail programs are in need of more Lasers to train and race in. If you have one or know of any sitting around that don't get used anymore and are in serviceable condition please consider a full or partial (discounted sale) tax deductible donation to the Bellingham Sailing Foundation.

Please contact Mike Powell - mike@mikepowellphoto.com

The PITCH posters have arrived!

One of the reasons that our sponsors are so interested in helping us with PITCH is that we spread these posters all over Puget Sound every year.

Our goal is to have a poster in every yacht club and ship chandlery from Vancouver, BC to Vancouver, WA and we could use your help in getting them posted.

All that is needed is to walk into a West Marine (or any other location where sailors frequent) and ask the manager if they will put up our poster. They always say yes.

There is a stack of these PITCH posters above the name tag drawers at BYC.

Feel free to grab a few if you can help and let me know where they are if you get any of them posted.

Thanks again for your help!

Sailors from Washington and BC competed this weekend in the exciting
Vendée Saltspring 2016

The Saltspring Island Sailing Club, in association with the Maple Bay Yacht Club, hosted the twelfth annual International Single and Double-Handed Sailing Race for sailboats around Saltspring Island, including an overnight stop Saturday night in beautiful Maple Bay.

BYC Rear Commodore Jim Gibson participated in this impressive and challenging 3 day event and had the opportunity to meet sailors and sailing officials from 10 regional yacht clubs.

Although this was a local event, many of the sailors have competed in races throughout the world.  One of the fastest boats was the Ghost Dancer, a SJ24 sailed by distinguished sailors from the Sidney North Saanich Yacht Club.

Bellingham sailboats are invited and encouraged to compete next year, so contact Jim for information and details.
