Whidbey Island Race Report by Dick Grimshaw

This year, for the first time, Whidbey Island Race Week commenced with two days of dinghy racing (five groups: monohulls, a-Cats, and Hobies - 16 - 17 and  Tigers). There were 6 mixed single hull dinghies racing on Saturday and Sunday at Oak Harbor (a total of nine races).  The first day had light winds, less that 5 knots and variable, and the second day had good steady wind at knots 10 plus and steady.  Of the 6 racers (Portsmouth scoring), three were from Bellingham: Lily Grimshaw and Brennan Ashton sailing Lasers, and Tom Childs sailing a Scow (Giggity Giggity).  Lily and Brennan took the overall honors with  first and second place respectively.
See: http://whidbeyislandraceweek.com/results_2010_dwi.html
The bi-hulls (A-cats, Tiger Hobie, Hobie 16, and Hobie 17) had 21 entrants.  Kim Alfred (BYC) took a 3rd overall in the A-cats.  It would be good to get all these boats to the Dale Jepson One Design Regatta in September.

Team Thursday Is Looking For Bartenders

As we all know, the Bellingham Yacht Club is a volunteer club and its success is a result of the huge efforts of you, the members. To that end, we are again seeking volunteer bartenders for certain nights each week. Well, Thursdays are one of those nights and John Gargett and John Van Haalen have agreed to be the Team Leaders, but we need as many of you as possible to look at your calendars and let us know if you can help Team Thursday by volunteering on an occasional basis. If you can, please contact either John Gargett at 360-656-5700 (john@gargett.com) or John Van Haalen 360-650-9319 (vhaalen@comcast.net). We thank you in advance for your willingness to help!

Bellingham Yacht Club Chaplin, Father Kevin, Elected Bishop

On June 25th, our own Father Kevin, Chaplin of the BYC, was elected Bishop to lead the Diocese of Cascadia, which is becoming a full Diocese of the Anglican Church in North America. Father Kevin will be consecrated and take office next summer. The Anglican Church is growing in North America, and within the Diocese of Cascadia there were 4 new churches added this year, meaning Father Kevin will be very busy. Being elected Bishop is an extremely significant event in the career of the clergy, with only a few ever becoming Bishop. Father Kevin is committed to continue serving as Chaplin for the BYC. So next time you see Father Kevin at our Club, be sure to tell he and his wife Stefanie congratulations on what is a major career accomplishment with the vote of the Cascadia Synod. How to Book Your Function at the BYC

Members! Check out the revised Facilities page! A big thanks to Sally Poorman for her help in getting this page updated with a Clubhouse calendar and a new reservations@byc.org email address. Now you can see when the club is available for your meetings or parties and you have a common email address to submit your requests.

Club Liquor Laws

The State Liquor laws can be tricky items to understand. The basics though are these:

· The Club cannot “give away” liquor. If you want to use the Club liquor and have an “open bar” for your function, then you will need to have all the drinks run thru your bar tab.

· If you wish to bring in your own alcohol for your event (this would have to be only during the non-staffed hours) then you will need to get a banquet permit.

· What you can’t do is a combination of these – use the Club alcohol in combination with your own, because then the Club would be operating under 2 liquor licenses (its own plus your banquet permit) and that’s illegal.

If you have specific questions about your particular function, please send an email to reservations@byc.org. Thank you! Michelle Hurst Bennett, Vice Commodore

PITCH Volunteers Needed!

Sign up sheet at the Club on the end of the bar.  EVERYONE Welcome!
PITCH Organizational Meeting: Monday July 26th, 2010 @ 6:00 at the Club!

Dale Jepsen One Design Regatta (DJOD) September 18th and 19th

The autumnal equinox marks the beginning of fall.  It also marks a weekend of great racing on Bellingham Bay.  This year, on September 18th and 19th, The Dale Jepsen One Design Regatta (DJOD) will be held in conjunction with the Laser District 6 Championships.  We will have 2 courses of full on adrenaline rush as sailors descend on the windy waters of Bellingham Bay.  Historically, The DJOD has had a healthy fleet of 505s, A CATs, Lasers, Tasars, Europes, and Hobie Tigers.  We welcome any and all motor-less dinghies to come out and compete.

The BYC is fortunate to host the last ever U.S. based Laser District 6 Championships.  The districts are being realigned, and our special international district will become exclusively Canadian.  Typically, sailors come from as far south as California to rack up Grand Prix points needed to qualify for the world championships.  It should be an exciting event.

If you are interested in helping, please call me at 360 676 4263.  Please visit the web site at DJOD.BYC.org.  See you on the water! Mike Poulos
